Just to add to the thousands of comments haha… my grandfather worked as a cook when Lake Logan was a logging town before they created the lake. That area is one of our family’s favorite places until this day. We still live in Haywood County. My brother and sister in Canton and my husband and I in Maggie Valley (this is where to live if you love snow!). Thank you so much for your videos - they have been so comforting somehow after my sweet dad went home to be with Jesus right before Christmas last year. He grew up in Canton on Rocky Branch. What a beautiful love story, I was just talking to my husband about my grandparents when they first were married and started their life. They were given a few acres from my grandma’s momma and daddy and all the family banded together and helped build their house that they’re still living in to this day! Cousins, aunts, uncles, siblings and in laws helped from the ground up. Makes me so sad that families just aren’t close like they used to be.

My Mom gave me the best marriage advice about a month before my husband and I married. She said, "You always love him, but there will be days you don't like him." I was almost offended.... How could I not like him? Well, fifteen years in, there are days I don't like him and days he definitely doesn't like me, but we love each other always. If younger people would understand rough patches are normal and not fall apart thinking it's over, I think the divorce rates would drop. It's not a fairytale, but we have a good, simple life where we love and respect the other and put God first. If you imagine a triangle with God at the top and your name on one bottom corner and your spouse's name on the other, you will notice the closer you get with God, the closer you are together. I'm glad you have a great marriage for others to look to as an example. You have raised two fine women as a result!!!

It’s call making a covenant with each other!!! My husband and I have been married for 43 years. The covenant we made with God and each other has taken us through good times, hard times and the joy of raising 4 beautiful children. Two years after our son was born, we had our sweet little girl. She was born with a heart disorder that required her to have surgery within days after she was born. At that time we were told she wouldn’t live to be a year old but God had a special plan for her life. She lived to be 12years, 6 months and 6day old. What a gift she was to our family. After she went to live with her Heavenly Father, we started keeping medical foster kids. Our first placement was two week old twins, boy and a girl. We ended up adopting those sweet little babies. We have had 36 medical foster kids come through our home. Said all that to say this, when a family deals with situations they have no control over, it either pushes them apart or it bonds them closer together. That’s where a covenant with God and each other makes the difference!

My dad is a carpenter by trade and built our family home, but it wasn't fully complete until 2007 when my sister and I graduated from community college and left home. 12 months sounds FAST in comparison!
Your description of love and commitment reminds me of a definition of love from a 2018 New Yorker interview with the world-famous couples therapist Esther Perel. I'm paraphrasing here, but "Love is a verb, and it's often surprising how it can ebb and flow. Love is not a permanent state of enthusiasm. Love is a practice."

I have been married for 15 years and my dear husband went through a financial crisis few years ago, it was hard for both but I prayed to God to give me the strength to support him and everything got better through the years. My wife and I will be married 55 years in a few weeks, and we can say Amen to the wisdom you shared with everyone about marriage. As a retired pastor, I am also thankful that you had the courage to tell the truth about the importance of God in your lives and marriage. Yes, it takes courage, especially nowadays to include God. One other thing, at 55 years of marriage, you'll still be having that same strange experience of it seeming like ages ago when you were a young, carefree couple....but yet at the same time, almost like yesterday.

I do so enjoy all of your videos but especially today. My only aunt worked at Champion in Hamilton, Ohio. And hearing you talk about your love story lifted my heart. We were married in 1974 when lots of folks talked about marriage was just a piece of paper. We talked it all through before we walked down the aisle and made our marriage our own. One hard and fast rule was even if the heat of the worst argument neither of us would ever talk about divorce. And we never did. Your story reminded me so much of ours. Matt reminds me so much of the man I married…quiet strength, lives true to his principles. A decade ago my husband collapsed while riding his bike and could not be revived. The next day I had a call from the fire department with a message from the man who called them when he saw him fall. That man wanted me to know that while waiting for the EMTs my husband just wanted to get home to his wife. He never did. That all was the definition of “bittersweet.” It was the worst call ever but with the sweet knowledge that I was the one he was thinking of.
I hope you and Matt have so, so many more years together and that you will continue to share your popsicles and chats with us all.

I'm watching this video a year (Sept '24) after it was posted, so August 2023. The intro title read 28 years married, so now you've been married 29 years, which means you were married in 1995, the same year as my wife and myself (3/11/95). Happy 29th anniversary! Our two sons were born 1997 and 2000. Our first-born, William, got married in 2022 and 2023 saw the birth of our first grandchild (girl), and March 2025, our next should arrive. LORD willing.
I really have enjoyed your videos the last couple days and have shared them with my wife, Jennifer. I drive truck so I'm away from home for quite some time, but when home we like to cook together. Looking forward to more content!

So refreshing to see in this world that there are people dedicated to each other and willing and happy to share in the joy of a union that is successful. This principle that is biblical that God joins man and woman together and they become one flesh is sorely lacking in society. My husband and I will celebrate 40 years on 12/22 God willing. We met in the bowling alley when I was on a league and he was home on leave from the Marine Corps. He proposed in just 4 short weeks. We often say we got married and then dated! Always put God first and you will be successful. Loved hearing your beautiful story and I love the radio truck for sale prank!! That was classic!

I admire you guys so much! We had twins, and we are simple people, we are just proud we have a roof over our head, clothes on our back, our health, and it’s a simple life, but we are truly blessed, loving the old ways, and in this day and time, we are blessed to know the old ways, our twins are 29, and we have a son that’s 24 now! We still live on the family farm, where I was raised, grow a garden, have chickens, and we even built an outdoor toilet this year, loving the simple life, going back to our roots as much as Possible! It’s funny how you go back to the way you were raised, instead of trying to be someone your not! God has truly blessed all of us! Thanks so much for sharing! Can’t wait for the twin story, ooh boy! That was a shocker for us for sure! 💞💞

I love a good "how we met" story! I've heard many of them from my sisters and brothers, and I also treasure the memory of how my late husband and I got together. I didn't know him at all and he teased me about a huge art textbook I was reading for Art 101. Soon our first date was visiting the Albright Knox museum across the street from Buffalo State College, where we studied. I know that for a marriage to be a success, love and respect and a loving relationship with God must be there. I'm so glad you two are blessed with each other!

It's fun listening to you talk about the ins and outs of keeping a marriage going. Our story kind of parallels yours to an extent. We started out with much of nothing and November 5th we celebrated our 57th wedding anniversary. Wasn't a cake-walk for sure, but love, like people, tempers with age and becomes much fuller, like a good set of broken-in boots. :) We were married in 1965 by a preacher in Cumberland, Maryland, without much fanfare and raised two children (now 53 and 56). Where's the time go? We enjoy your presentations a lot, they are like us...down home and not showy. God bless you guys.

Your story is fascinating, Matt and Tipper! Thanks for letting us viewers in on it. Advertising Matt's truck for sale as revenge for a broken heart was funny, but learning that the "glue" holding your marriage together is your common values, including mutual respect, and also your faith is an extremely powerful message. For virtually all my life I've heard "opposites attract" and have seen it disproved over and over, and have experienced the folly of it personally. Kudos to the two of you getting it right from the beginning and continuing to do it right.

Beautiful! The love and bond between you two is present in every moment! What a handsome couple you were and still are, even more so now. Funny story: Once, on the Tonight Show, Johnny Carson had a lady guest who had been married for 75 years. Having himself been married five times, Johnny had to ask her: "In all those years, did you ever think of divorce?" The audience laughed (at him). The lady guest became very indignant: "No! Never! Young man, in my day, a promise was a promise. In my day, we kept our word. I can swear that in seventy-five years of marriage, I have never once thought of divorce. Not once! ...Murder, yes, but never divorce!" God bless!

    Great story!
I first set eyes on my future wife when we were in third and fourth grade in a town 15 miles and four years away from where we would start dating in 7th and 8th grade. Married at 23 and 24, we've been together 46 years.
God first and foremost and then the division of labor in building the family and maintaining the farmstead, guy doing guy stuff, gal doing gal stuff, united when needed to accomplish the task of raising and directing the children. Nowadays we're the secure anchor for our children and grandchildren, a place where they can come to "recharge their batteries".
