Amaryllis Man
The best, knowledgeable cultivator of Amaryllis.
All plant care has functioned for me through several years.
Thank you very much.
Thank you so very much! This is the ONLY video demonstrating how to remove the leaves before storage (my family has grown them outdoors in the ground and kept them there for well over 60yrs). This is my first time growing inside. Thank God! Thank you so very much for sharing this information. 🥰
You are most welcome. Happy Gardening.
I was just wondering what to do! Thanks for these easy instructions. 🌺🤠👍
3 Tablespoons per quart of water
Thank you for the education. Bless you, too!
I love your videos, so educational. Greetings from Argentina. Yes, we love Hippeastrum down here too!!
Thank you for the refresher. However, is the hydrogen peroxide full strength or diluted?
3 Tablespoon per quart of water
Hello Amaryllis Man Please help me. I'm in South Africa and one of my friends Amaryllis bulbs has had too much water now the roots have rotted completely. What can I do to try revive it. Its a double red 😢many thanks
Soak just the basal plate in water until neww
roots form.
Please let me know WHEN I should fertilize bulbs that I purchased last year. I gave them a few doses of orchid fertilizer when I remembered to do that for my orchids this summer and they stayed outside on my patio. As of early November they're drying in the darkest coolest place I could come up with.
Fertilize every month or so during the growing season .
@@AmaryllisMan You mean After flowering, right?
Yes, when you keep them outside for the summer.@@amythompson7700
thank you for the tips =) we are in NJ and we have ours in an unheated garage in paper bags. it has been unusually hot this september, last week being in the 90s, so the garage was about 77 degrees or so and still in the low to mid 70s now. will this hurt their chances of coming out of dormancy okay?!
It depends upon how long they have been stored in the hot conditions. If only a week or so they might do okay. However, longer periods of exposure just might cause them some trouble.
@@AmaryllisMan thank you! i will move them to a dark closet inside our house =)
@@nicolehammond5637 I suggest the chiller or refrigerator's veg crisper section. Do not place apples anywhere near them, please.
Oops! I just realised you are in NJ. That should be cool enough now that it's the Fall.
I was told to keep the leaves on and let dry so they can draw out all the nutrition before storage. 🤷..
He is literally called the amaryllis man - I think he knows what he is talking about
@@CharliecatII I know he does. It's just what I was told. 😁
I ll try anything
That is not essential. Thank-you
That’s what several have said. I’m trying it that way. Just takes a while for them to dry.
Hello! I’ve been growing amaryllis from seed for a few months, and they’re each a few inches tall; around 3-5 with some having two leaves. Do they need to be put into dormancy, too? A few of them have yellowed leaves and I’m worrying a lot right now. I’ve given them some hydrogen peroxide to get rid of fungus gnats in the past, and have recently changed their watering schedule to once every week and have added coffee grounds to their soil. Is it my caretaking that’s the problem or are they just going into dormancy? It’s late summer where I’m at if you’re curious.
No need to put them in dormancy. They need to continue their normal growth. Don't over-expose them to sunlight.
@@AmaryllisMan Thank you! One more question; Will lowering their sunlight levels alone prevent further yellowing, or is there something else I need to do? This is my first time taking care of amaryllis, and I am so lost.
@@Dusty_Doggo, there is no way for me to know what your yellowing is.
Full strength or cut with water for hydrogen peroxide?
3 tablespoons per quart.
@@AmaryllisMan thankyou!!
How do I handle an amaryllis bulb that has roots wrapped (loosely) all around it. Healthy as an ox, but it's ready to go in to dormancy, but the roots are wrapped. The roots are all healthy and white. I had planned to let it dry for a week before I put in a paper bag in the basement.
That is not uncommon. Snip off the roots and you're ready.
@@AmaryllisMan I shook out the roots, chopped one or two LONG ones, chopped the foliage and tossed it in a paper bag in the basement. I tend to overthink things. I may order a couple of bulbs from you and your wife.
I normally cut off the roots at the basal plate & the leaves. Let them dry out for a couple of days before putting them away for storage.
ok, I see someone wrote 3tbsp/quart water, hope that's correct
Yes
what is the ratio of peroxide to water for soaking the bulbs?
Yes, that is correct.
Can I use witch hazel instead of hydrogen peroxide???
Witch hazel is an astringent with anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. It may help relieve inflammation and fight acne, among other uses1. However, I couldn’t find any reliable source that confirms witch hazel has antifungal properties. That was a quick google search. I believe hydrogen peroxide would work better.
I bought a yellow star a year ago, not flowers just 🍃 should I do this treatment?
If you live up north and the bulb is large enough to flower you could.
Thanks
Do they need to be dry before storage?
Yes to prevent the fungal growth.
