That sampling example is actually really cool and gives me a new respect for the song. That little tiny bit in the Chilli Peppers’ song is so catchy and groovy, so you wish it’d be longer, and then Crazy Town looped it and did just that. RIP Shifty
Im guessing Shifty wrote the lyrics and Bret found that sample. Although unless Shifty is lying, it sounds entirely plausible to me that he said "it needs to sound like Under The Bridge" while baked to kick off the search for the sample within the RHCP catalogue.
I want to correct myself, back then I thought they stole it, now I am more into hiphop and I appreciate every great sample. And that one they made was epic.
Music in general was more creative at the time and it was easy to find music that was pleasant to listen to, it was not vulgar. This song kind of stood out, it got popular because it was somehow different with a nice tune coupled with an unusually raspy voice. They were ahead of their time with it. Show me someone who makes similar songs these days. There is no melody, just the same beat in almost every song. I think this guy was a talented musician and his ongoing addiction probably had something to do with getting into the limelight suddenly and being unable to establish himself as an acknowledged artist in the long run. I listened to their whole debut album back then and some of the tracks were not bad at all. Popularity, fame, and talent do not necessarily go together. Some of the most talented people get the least amount of recognition but that is how things work at most jobs outside the music industry as well.
Its just odd how he continues to make this song over and over and seems more and more like a trash druggie. What happened to the rest of the band. Did they leave when he started doing drugs even more? I dont get it I used to love Crazy Town.
