losing light and patience at the same time..... i think we have all been there at some point. frustrating! love the project and videos bucky! keep it rollin dude !
Thanks so much for this series, Buck- as someone who grew up with Brats around, it’s so cool seeing one get fully brought into the 21st century- and (mostly) in a driveway, as a father-daughter project, no less… just dope as all hell. It’s been satisfying and nostalgic and exciting all at once to watch.
Also Bucky I sometimes hit the splines on the axles when they are super tight going in.Once I do that and wipe the axle with a clean oily rag they slide in easier.Hope this helps..
Really enjoying watching you two on this project. Many of us Aussies are subaru fans as well. Glad the subaru engineers (or factory cost cutters) improved the subsiquent models from the 80's ... much easier to work on from GC through to the GG impreza's
Nice work. Btw at 10:30 I would stuff that sand collector of a bend so that it won't gather water, salt and rubbish. Or open the bend a bit. And also redo the anti rust job 😄
Heya Buck! For the suspension to move the arms down easy while putting in struts or shocks of all kinds, I use a *60in Pinch Bar* saves a ton of spine and curse jar change in leverage.
Should you have a 2” distance on the steady bar that attaches to the swing arm to keep the geometry right. I have a 6” lift on mine and had to do this to keep all the suspension location in the same place. Loving this build from Scotland.
@@ex35240sx hi I haven’t taken any vids of mine s yet but intend to do so. A previous owner took one and it’s on UA-cam, here is the title: SUBARU BRAT WITH 6 INCH SUSPENSION LIFT. 4WD. 1989. I have fabricated and installed power steering from a Vauxhall Corsa ( UK small car) and converted the twin headlights to quad headlights adapting Ford Capri headlights. It’s Pearl white with metallic gold stripes.
It's looking good brother and it's always funny when somebody else is doing it now when you have to be the one doing it though I was laughing at you the whole way but you're doing an awesome job with that thing
Unbolting the control arms up front might have made the strut install easier. But damn wish I was closer, would have let you borrow my factory dealer 1970s/80s Subaru spring compressors lol
I had the axle nut off the other side and the arm wouldn’t drop any more so it didn’t help at all. I would have had to take everything apart and still end up with binding axles so it is what it is.
Hey man, those strut top spacers need to be offset and you need to space the engine cross member along with gearbox and rear end to match. Otherwise things are going to flog out and won't drive well. Offset positive camber is normal with these but with no offset it's exaggerated.. With your contacts you have probably found this out by now. But still.. hope the info helps. 👍
The subframe from any Impreza works in the brat and if you ream the bottom control arm from the front you can use all the wrx or sti stuff you want after that. The rear is all xt6 for the 5 lug no way around it unless you can tig weld and fabricate fluently
Love all of your content, amazing to watch alittle motivation. And to teach your daughter is even awesomer lol. Im thinking your pinion angle on your transfer case drifeshafts is too steep to translate the power smoothly. The shafts are bouncing because the constant velocity (cv shaft) can only operate at a given angle and when you raise the chassis, they can't rotate and transfer power easily. They're binding and that's the bounce you feel
I wish they had this car in Forza Horizon 4, hopefully they will in the next installment at the end of the year bro! I love these older cars, I've really been geeking out about anything from the 60s and 80s Like the Ford escorts and the Ford Cortina
There's a chance you'll need angled blocks to fix the drive train angling. Or if you have a transfer case a 1" drop. Usually what causes vibration when you life a vehicle. 2" doesn't seem like enough to matter though.
Its tough working on an uncommon vehicle by todays standard. Let alone modifying them. The axles may be at the max angle and binding up, Can you space the front subframe down?
Just a thought the 2” spacers I’ve seen have the holes offset from top to bottom plate to take account of the angle the strut sits at. This alters the camber of the wheels.
@@BuckyLasekOfficial found this on ultimatesubaru.com thought it might help. I found another site where they explained how to calculate the hole offset required. Body Lift aren't hard to make. Some simple rules to follow like front strut tops need 7mm offset inwards every 25mm lift to correct. Steering extension is needed which can be tricky if you are no good at welding. There's heaps of pictures of them around this forum, and that's pretty much all the blue prints you should need. Just measure the bolt patterns (only necessary for the engine mounts and the EA82's rear sub frame mount as well as strut tops, as the rest are just single bolt blocks). www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=100980&highlight=lift+kit*
Hey Bucky, love the subi. Did you ever figure out a way to level out the camber on the front wheels without doing a full 2in body spacer install? I got 2in front spacers for my 86 Brat and ran into the same issue with the camber and can’t find any other solutions…
Should have compressed the springs. Thanks for posting, and in come all the ASE certified shade tree mechanics that will tell you what you should have done lol
Great job on this! My son and I just picked up an 86 Brat to restore. Finding OEM replacement struts is impossible so it looks like we are headed for the lift which is something we would do anyway. What struts did you get and where were the the spacers from? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So did I of my old79. Love/hate. But I miss it these days
That lift kit was a great idea. The stance looks so much better and when you get it sorted out the Brat will probably handle better.

I’m amazed the brat came with disk brakes
Yeah, I may be installing rear disc brakes at some point once I get this suspension sorted.

So I'm guessing you need either longer driveshafts or relocate output splines because the drive shaft angle is too sharp/stretched out
We opted out of lift kit.
I am scared that sharp corner by the trim will eat tires... hopefully the mud flaps fill it in more.
It will be addressed if it becomes an issue, this is all a work in progress. 👍🏼
hmmmm weird transmission vibration, unless the mount decided to go?
No, it’s an axle binding issue.
A ratchet strap actually works fine as a spring compressor
Sheeeewww ya buck!!!
Bucky, That is a bitchin ride that lift kit is Fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥 !!!!!!!
The axle problem is due to the gigglepin it’s next to the grinshaft
It's a wonder how anti-squeal springs make brake callipers squealier..

We have stock suspension. No more lift
You might just have too much angle on the axles or when you made the new angle it exposed a already week axle shaft.

How do you get camber on those cars?
I will have to have camber plates made.
I wonder if gl guys have some tricks cuz they usually lift these
