In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 8 Topic 8 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 8 (1945-1980).
As the French colony of Indochina (Vietnam) threw off its colonial rulers, it quickly became a pawn for a proxy war in the larger context of the Cold War. North Vietnam settled into a communist government led by Ho Chi Minh, while South Vietnam remained democratic and had strong ties to the United States.
John F. Kennedy had been sending "military advisors" to Vietnam by the thousands, and when the North Vietnamese invaded the South, American troops were already on the ground.
After Kennedy's assassination, Lyndon B. Johnson took office and sought to win the war by incremental escalation, which never seemed to work. However, the Gulf of Tonkin incident gave Johnson all the pretext he needed to ask Congress to give him authority to continue the military escalation. It wasn't an official declaration of war, and that became very controversial in time.
However, after years of escalation and mounting protests at home, Johnson finally ended the push for more soldiers in Vietnam. Richard Nixon adopted the policy of Vietnamization in order to facilitate American extraction from the war.

Hey Mr. Heimler, greetings from South Korea! I'm a sophomore at an international high school. My APWH class is benefiting hugely from your content, and I couldn't thank you enough for that. Your vids + my UGA superfan teacher are giving the entire grade level some serious southern accents when we've never even been there...

It was (just checked) the USS Maddox DD 731, a late WWII Sumner class destroyer, that was attacked by two torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. I only mention this because there is different level of intensity there per the situation. A ten thousand ton battleship would be a whole lot more intimidating than a swift little destroyer. (Pre guided missile variant hence the DD instead of DDG).

i’m not so sure about the United States fighting for “democracy” in this war… the last thing I’d call Diem is democratic. first thing i’d call him is a dictator, then cruel, barbaric, corrupt, etc. we were fighting for capitalism and our own interests, not democracy.

It was confirmed. Heimler is incorrect. Sonar operators by no doubt detected launched torpedos on the day of the incident. What is disputed and what Heimler is referring to is whether or not a reattack a few days later ever occured. However there is no doubt that the USS Maddox was fired on by North Vietnamese torpedo boats.

@@noco7243 APUSH is a skills-based course, not a content-based one. The syllabus has to cram every event that the US was involved in into the space of a high school course, of course they can't go into deep detail. My teacher had to stuff all of imperialism into a single class block.
