In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 8 Topic 7 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 8 (1945-1980).
As America engaged in the Cold War with the Soviet Union, the ideological battle spread to various countries in Latin America, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.
In Latin America, the CIA staged a coup of a marginally socialist leader in order to install a more U.S. friendly leader. In Asia, the Cold War heated up with the growing tension over the partition of Vietnam (Indochina). In the Caribbean, communist Fidel Castro rose to power and although the Americans attempted to depose him in the Bay of Pigs invasion, it was ultimately unsuccessful. This resentment set the stage for the Cuban Missile Crisis.
As Eisenhower was leaving office, he warned Americans about the growing danger of the military industrial complex which tied America's industrial output to munitions. He warned that if this continued, then it would be very tempting to make policy decisions, and especially military policy decisions, based on the economic benefit of our industrial sector.
