I like the stump removal method from an old book on farming. 1. Build a hog pen around the stump, move your hogs in. 2. Every day, take a crowbar and poke holes in the dirt around the edges of the stump. Pour some dried corn in each hole. The hogs will spend all day digging out the corn. Eventually, they’ll dig the stump up for you.
In the 70s I helped on a ranch that used dynamite, heavy equipment to help remove giant stumps. Big old world tee stumps have lots of usable wood. One huge stump would not come out so fertilizer was mixed up and Dynamite, det cord used. They had the permits etc and that stump big as a car came out. Big money in those old trees.
When my landlord wanted to move rocks from the ground he would throw dog food into the cracks between the rocks and let the wild pigs remove the rocks by digging for the dog food.
I like the fire ring idea. However, the chainsaw you used to cut the slots into the stump you could have used to cut the stump closer to the ground. Therefore the burn time would be reduced to a few hours.
In less time than it took him to "score" those 3 lines with a chainsaw he could have just cut off the stump. But then he wouldn't have been able to advertise the firepit ring.
Fyi, keep an eye on that area for awhile afterwards, it's been known that the fire can continue to burn/smoulder, for weeks and even months, thru the roots in the ground.
I have used a metal ring cut out of a 55 gallon drum to burn stumps...The WolfRidge smokeless fire pit is a much more elegant way to do it! Hint 1: next time, try drilling holes with a wood boring bit. Then soak the holes with your favorite flammable liquid, the dry stump will absorb the liquid, then it will Burn Baby Burn. The thinner the flammable liquid, the more it will absorb, so, kerosene will soak in better than diesel. Diesel can be smokey, anyway. A bottle of charcoal lighter fluid, soaked into the stump, burns pretty cleanly. The cuts in the stump area great idea, also.
Yes Dan, a very Happy Father's to you. That is quite a unit for Burning the Stump out. I have been in contact with Bob Nelson with Wolf Log Splitters. He is going to be at Booneville in August and I have been invited. I don't know if I will be able to make it but see how Funding is for us. He is going going to have a Wolfridge Log Splitter there a 17RS. I do hope I can make it to look at it and Possible Purchase it. All depends on our Money Situation. Being a Senior on a Fixed income and almost 72yrs it might work Out. Again Happy Father's Day Sir and Enjoy with your Family. Ron from the Woodyard in Duanesburg NY.
Here in the southwest, we have mesquite wood, which is about twice as hard as oak. What I do to remove the mesquite stump is to cut down to ground level, then use steel wedges and a sledge to separate down the middle. I also dig around the base to expose the other root arms, and after it splits down the center, it comes out relatively easily.
When I was about 12 I helped our retired neighbor Don remove 6 white oak stumps from his yard. Used a shovel, axe, mattok pick axe. He gave me my first chain saw for the work! I wasn't expecting anything. I was stoked. Burning them out like this looks like more fun. I'm not sure you could ever burn it down enough.
The trick is to keep putting tinder on the fire well after it has burned down to ground level. This causes the burn to teach the roots, and eat the roots. The drawback is that then there is a fire underground, and could potentially reach any underground infrastructure, depending on how extensive are the roots.
You sure made quick work of those cross cuts with that hand saw, must have been just flying through it!!! 😂 😂 😂 Happy Father’s Day Dan, hope you and LBM have a great day together.😊
I cut stump lower. Cut slots deeper in center. Add used motor oil. Put 55 gal drum with no bottom and holes around bottom. Add junk wood. Light fire works pretty good
The most successful stump burns I've had with ones in that size range, was to dig in 4 or 5 spots around the circumference, trying to get angled vent tunnels as far underneath it as possible, supplement with chainsaw cuts down to the tunnels, then start small fires in each one. The idea being fire, like heat, rises. It's a lot easier to burn from the bottom up than the top down. Top-down fire lays are what you use in camping to consume the wood slowly for an all-night fire. Fire underneath the fuel, with plenty of air flow, will burn one out like a blast furnace.
Use to use an old truck tire and brush to burn them off. Dig down a half foot remove the easy roots and burn again and again. Always need a spot to burn up fallen branches from storms anyway. Tried a half 55 gallon drum with the bottom cut out for a fire ring for awhile. Raise one side up an inch with a stick underneath gave it a chimney effect to fan the flame. That stump looked like a good one for a rocket stove.
After cutting stump, you could have used a wedge and mall to remove most of it. Set those pieces aside plunge cut and repeat. Then take the kindling you just made put it in fire ring on top of a bag of quick light charcoal. On top of remaining stump. Enjoy the fire. Job done!
Video was worth watching just to hang out at your bar! I might have tried making some 3/4" speed bore holes through the stump from top to out the bottom side to get some flames inside as well. Very cool!
As a wildland firefighter, i know for a fact that even though you don't think there's not enough oxygen, those roots can smolder and reignite up to a year later, so be prepared.
In central OK, friends use free trash tires from tire retailers to quickly burn stumps. That method was a very fast way to solve the problem, even in rain.
Happy Father's Day, Shifty! My neighbor burns out stumps like this all the time. I feel it takes half the tree worth of wood to burn them out and waste to much good wood. I cut them low, wait till they start rotting good and dig em out with a shovel myself.
Stumps are wet/ moist. Outside is dryer and it burns better, but it stucks anyway. I do like that - I take Fiskars axes (I have 2 types - one small and big one) and start to work - outside first and after some time stump is gone. Roots I do the same - measure about 10cm in depth and just remove all parts with axes or with tongs for branches. Be happy! 🍻
It’ll work a whole lot better if you put a lid on that. It holds the heat in and concentrates it all on the stump. Put the ring around the stump, fill all the area around the stump with charcoal to the top, pour some diesel on it, light it and quickly close the lid. You may want to dig a couple holes at the outside bottom of the ring so it can draw air in. It’ll burn the whole stump out in a matter of hours
Do they come in titanium? I made basically the same thing, just a slightly different look, about q0 years ago out of a 35 gallon ink drum from where I was working at the time. It worked a treat but didn't take long to burn out, even with hitting it with a wire brush after each burning and putting it inside the garage out of the weather. About 6 months is all it lasted. I always thought it would be nice to have one in titanium so it would last
Hi Dan I think you got a Successful Fire Pit That Wolf Ridge Smokeless Ring Holds the Heat in to keep the fire 🔥 Hot and The Mini Firewood Splits Was the Cherry on Top
Leaf blower with a steel hvac duct pipe to push in oxygen and clear ash to finish it up. I use that but it leaves a ring and combining with your setup may resolve that!
The thing about fire is, it really doesn't seem like it wants to burn downward. I would try digging under it enough to get some hot fire burning toward the center of the stump. If you can get it burning good and supply enough air to keep it going, I think it would burn better than way than what many have tried by trying to put fire on top of it, hoping it will burn its way downward.
I've burnt out a few stumps by digging around the stump around 6 in. deep add either wood or charcoal on one side and set up a blower to blow into the fire and somewhat around the stump. Then just keep the fire burning. The stump will be gone in a few hours or so and then all you need to do is fill in the hole with dirt and plant some grass seed. Or hire someone with a stump grinder. I've done that to.
I burned out a 24" oak stump by drilling 12" deep vertical holes around the top of the stump . Then drilled horizontal holes to intersect the vertical holes. Poured a little gas into each hole and let it rip. About 4 hours later the stump was gone . Drilling holes in this way makes the stump act like a rocket fired heater where the wood burns at a higher temp.
I am very concerned that if it gets so hot the roots underneath can actually move the fire from the roots. This happens too often in Canada. It can go underground for miles and restart somewhere else. My neighbour just had that episode.
Yukon candle. Chain saw. Cut an x on top of stump pour on some diesel light it and forgetaboutit. I cleared an acre of old growth forest stumps, some were 36 inches in dia. If u dont have a chain saw a brace and bit with the largest dia bit u can find. Or just use an electric drill and drill many holes in the top and lighter off
Auger power drill the stump in a radial pattern (in your case you can drill them by hand - LOL). Fill holes with kerosene, repeat 3 or 4 times. Light a pile of charcoal on top of stump. It’ll burn it’s way down through the kerosene soaked stump - no firewood or ring needed.
They have stump removal grinders . They are a ditch witch type tool with a grinder blade. Takes about 10-15 mins to get rid of a small stump like yours.
It'd be tough on a Oak stump with how high the moisture content is and how locked in the moisture is with Oak. I've been through 2 burns and some of the stump is still there...lol
Drill holes in top of stump and pour used motor oil or old cooking grease and some lighter fluid in the holes to soak the stump, thoroughly. Once lit it will burn completely out.
A lot of the time you can remove old stumps if they're really old and dry with a wood splitting Mall and wedges and split it like you're splitting wood or get a carbine chain to put on your chainsaw if you have one and cut it out you cut that with a hand saw you don't have a chainsaw if you had a chainsaw you could cut the stump lower to the ground so it would be a lot less burning
Years ago had elms die on the ranch . Cut down for firewood. The stumps were 4 foot wide Set a old tire beside them and diesel it. Burned the stumps 3 feet into the ground. Filled the holes in, like they never existed.
Old tires smoke like hell but they burn hot as hell as well. I've done it works great. But if you have close neighbors they may get pissed. I live far enough away.
Your wood rack, would be perfect for a wood burning smoker bbq grill The wood is split and about the right length to fit into a bbq firebox. Just need hickory, apple, peach, and so on woods for it. These can be sold in bags at the store.
Proof of concept: stump grinders might not be practically available, the stump might not be in an area easily accessible. You can just use a barrel. I’ve been doing it for years. Smokeless pits do burn faster
I'd rent a stump grinder, but I'd have to get it myself, and there's no way I could get it in (and out of) my truck by myself. Interested to see how well it works
I had a chestnut stump I couldn’t get worked on it hours a week on my days off I finally got rid of it by burning with charcoal briquettes. It burns for days
That is a good idea of doing it that way but sometimes you can't because of being too close to something but what you should have done is got some barbecue lighter fluid douse those cuts you made put the lighter fluid in it to help it burn faster
Dig around the stump a little bit. Drill a hole with a auger bit 1" or bigger if you have one. Drillthe ti the middle. Then down in the middle of the stump. Start a fire in the hole the air will feed it from the button. And you'll have a good night campfire and your stump will be gone.
Drill holes in the top of it and fill it with kerosene. Keep topping it off for a few days. Then, in about 2 weeks, throw a match on it. It'll burn out the stump as well as the long roots, and you don't need to buy a huge steel ring that you don't know what to do with afterward.
Well the 'ring' is a fire pit/ring so afterwards it will be used for that...lol...it can be used over and over again for having fires in the backyard. Also adding kerosene does not remove the moisture that is trapped in the wood. That is what keeps Oak stumps from burning and the reason you need to add other wood to burn and dry down the actual stump so that it will burn. The stump was probably close to 40% moisture in the wood and water won't burn, even with kerosene.
When I was in Boy Scouts, one patrol built their fire over a stump. They put it out, no smoke, water, etc. Much later we found out the stump continued to burn in the roots, then surfaced, about a week later. Luckily it was reported and doused, for real.
Do you work for the manufacturer of the fire ring as a rep or something? You have a nice house. You can get those metal barrels and put holes in it and save a lot of money and does the same thing. Those metal barrels cost around $20 or less.
That hand saw really kicks out alot of chips lol😂
Almost like it works as good as a chainsaw.
Glad I'm not the only one to catch that😅. He tried his best to trick us
So dishonest 😂
Even used an extremely dull Chain so it would be dust instead of chips.
I was going to say, is he really going to fake those cuts with a hand saw...YEP! He sure did!
I like the stump removal method from an old book on farming.
1. Build a hog pen around the stump, move your hogs in.
2. Every day, take a crowbar and poke holes in the dirt around the edges of the stump. Pour some dried corn in each hole. The hogs will spend all day digging out the corn.

When my landlord wanted to move rocks from the ground he would throw dog food into the cracks between the rocks and let the wild pigs remove the rocks by digging for the dog food.
YEa but where you gonna find a bunch pf pigs?
I like the fire ring idea. However, the chainsaw you used to cut the slots into the stump you could have used to cut the stump closer to the ground. Therefore the burn time would be reduced to a few hours.
He used a chain saw
I need one of those turbo handsaws. Man that thing kicks butt.
That hand saw really throws the sawdust 😂
No kidding…& with hardly any effort ! 😆
Who needs a chainsaw? 😂
After the "hand saw hack," it'd be quicker to just split what's left...
you could have just turned the chainsaw horizontal and taken 95% of that stump away.
Do you really think we believe you cut those slots with a Hand saw. They look al little wide, more like a CHAIN SAW!!!
Why be disingenuous when burning out a stump?!?!?
Yes. Why not just tell the story in a factual way. That was definitely a chainsaw, not a handsaw.
Im sure it was supposed to be funny yall lighten up a little dang
In less time than it took him to "score" those 3 lines with a chainsaw he could have just cut off the stump. But then he wouldn't have been able to advertise the firepit ring.
The 3-foot-long sawdust trails were not hidden... he tried to be funny.
I drilled a stump and made a Swedish torch out of it. Worked really well. I like that fire pit and the rack.
$500, you should.
...or turn the stump into a Rocket Stove. Some drilling involved and maybe not practical for such a large stump.
Old washing machine drum does same job!
But that doesn’t cost $500! Gotta make that commission.
Which is where they got the idea for the fire ring, so you're spot on accurate!
Fyi, keep an eye on that area for awhile afterwards, it's been known that the fire can continue to burn/smoulder, for weeks and even months, thru the roots in the ground.
It ended up raining all night but I’ll still keep a watch on it. 👍🍻

A bottle of charcoal lighter fluid, soaked into the stump, burns pretty cleanly. The cuts in the stump area great idea, also.
Even vegetable oil works good.
You know I’m gonna try that!
Totally agree...Kerosene and a bunch of deep holes bored into the stump really gets hot !
The stump burn method needs a below ground hole to the center of the stump to speed it up use an electric blower
Came to learn how to burn a stump. All I got was a guy trying to sell a piece of metal called Wolfe Ridge then it rained. 😅

🤔the kerf looks to be about the width of a chainsaw 😂😂😂
That hand saw amazingly throws sawdust backwards for a push cut saw.
I was thinking the same thing, cuts are way to wide to be from the hand saw.. definitely a chain saw.
Man that cross cut saw had one heck of a kerf! Even looks like you had it going fast enough to fling chips😂 Love those WR fire pits! 👍🏻👍🏻
It's amazing how far that handsaw threw the sawdust.
I cut stump lower. Cut slots deeper in center. Add used motor oil. Put 55 gal drum with no bottom and holes around bottom. Add junk wood. Light fire works pretty good

You should take little boss boy to see your barber.
I've done it with a regular fire barrel that didn't have a bottom took a while just kept burning 🔥 in it until it was gone.

Glad you used a chain saw to cut those grooves, instead of the puny hand saw.
Yeah Dan likes to be a funny man. I noticed that right off myself.
That mini firewood would be perfect for my wood stove I use for winter camping.
You're supposed to say this a paid advertisement.
This is way better than renting a stump grinder. What a family time! And a cool product to use!
Smoke less, ha ha ha
I used an old rim off a car. piled up charcoal, lit, and set the rim over it. burnt down into the ground. Worked great.
Wow, that handsaw puts out a fane wood powder like a chain saw! Amazing!
Interesting way to do it.
I just dug out stump No 2 of 10 in my back yard today - shovel, axe and crowbar got it done - but I’m whipped now ahhah
Video was worth watching just to hang out at your bar! I might have tried making some 3/4" speed bore holes through the stump from top to out the bottom side to get some flames inside as well. Very cool!

A year later? Dang that's scary
@@cbpuzzle I believe that there's a coal mine in India that has been burning for close to 200 years.

Happy Father’s Day Dan ! A great idea to use a fire ring to get rid of stumps. Cheers 👌🏻🔥🇨🇦
Great idea! Back in my younger days I'd dig and chop them out just for the exercise, haha! Them day's are over!
Can you put a link to that handsaw in the description? That thing is amazing LOL!
Not sure they make them anymore, but I’ll check…😆
How many screws did you drop down between the cracks of the deck assembling the fire ring? Lol
Ha…surprisingly none!😀👍😆
Good burning 👍 Sure beats piling a bunch of wood up around a stump and having it fall down and away from it as it burns. Happy Father's Day
Just want to ask if it's a must to remove the stump, or what is the disadvantage to keep it remains? 🙏😊
Great hand sawing!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂 Great way to burn a stump!! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day

The fire 🔥 pit and mini firewood 🪵 rack would make awesome Father’s Day gifts. Pretty cool stuff! 🎉🎉🎉
I burn all mine this way too. But I use the drum from an old broken dryer. It's srap so it's free
You've got Four Wheel Drive and a shovel. Why do you have to burn out the stump?
Crocs, socks, cut-off sleeves and half a haircut. Murica!
That is what freedom means, not? Or are you suggesting we should conform to standards set by others?
Get some dryer lint and use that too. It lights very easily!
May or may not work are there any other options 😅
Where do I get one of those handsaws? Made quick work of that stump 😂
Where did you get the lawnmower trailer?
That is from www.metsamachines.com/ under the UltraTec trailers.
Why not use the tractor to dig out the stump? Happy Father’s Day wood hound! 🇺🇸
Yeah ! Very wide cuts for a bandsaw!
Looks like a decent bit of kit though ! 👍👍👍👍😁😁😁
Is that snow falling? ❄️
Hope you wore eye and ear protection while using that “hand saw!”
