Something about this video really struck me. As a Canadian with Indigenous ancestry, I’m always incredibly excited to hear about the wonderful things being done by First Nations people. Those paints and your painting are beautiful and I’m always struck by the high quality of your reviews. You’ve inspired me to look into getting some. What a great way to support local businesses and try new paint!
When you pulled up the ultra grey ochre, I looked at it on my desk with such fondness-and then you pulled up my painting! I'm so glad you picked up these paints Denise, they're so so so nice. I'm planning to put in another order myself
Hi! Thank you so much for featuring my Skillshare class on your video. I'm glad you found the class informative and useful! Your sketchbook turned out so elegantly made!
I loved your class Nia! Once I get some good pictures I'll make sure to upload a project for you. Thanks for helping me to rekindle my excitment for book binding :)
Wow - beautiful paints, very earth-friendly, and produced 5 hours away from me (in same province of Canada - Ontario). I would not have known about them without your video Denise, so thank you. Your homemade sketchbook and Jay are lovely.
Depending on where you are in Ontario (I'm in Ottawa) an art store in Brockville carries them! Called medium effort. They are a great small business that sell two different Canadian made paints!
Ever since I saw this video, I’ve been fascinated and intrigued to try Beam paints-love the history and origins of this company and product. So when hubby asked me: “What would you like for a wedding anniversary present?” I chose Beam! This will make it doubly special and precious to me for many years to come-can’t wait to receive them! 😊🎨🍾
I think the Blue Jay was a perfect choice for this video because it’s a bird that every Ontario resident will be familiar with! This is a set of paints I aspire to invest in and have a top place on my wishlist!
When you said that Beam paints was from Manitoulin Island, I couldn't believe it! I vacationed there as a kid before I came to the States. Now I have to check them out!! Thank you, Denise!! 💖
i am close to tears at that boreal green...its so beautiful! also while watching you swatch the great ocean/ultramarine, i said “wow that blue REALLY jumps off the page!” at the same time as you did-jinx! thanks a lot for the review, will definitely be looking forward to the day ill be able to get my hands on some of these paints
I think this company, headed by an indigenous woman, who is passionate & knowledgeable about her product, is great! I have ONE of her paint stones & would like to have more, but have to order them online and they ARE an investment, but I think they're worth it. I got my one paint stone at a small independent art supply store in Lancaster, PA (Curio Gallery & Creative Supply) when I was visiting there a couple of years ago. Her colors are beautiful and its great to support indigenous women businesses!
@@InLiquidColor I'm very fond of the indigold, personally! it adds a great touch to any night skies- but I can't deny how much I love the robin's egg blue (or indeed most of the blues/teals) from Beam Paints- they're an absolute delight to use.
Denise! What a stunning Jay! You manage to incorporate such life and personality into your animal artworks! I do not believe Skillshare has a more dedicated advocate either! I loved watching your review of these paints, I am not in the market for handmade paints, I did not enjoy my foray in years past. I am glad you are enjoying and supporting an under appreciated artist. I am continuing to learn about my DaVinci watercolors, the pro’s n con’s and I am still so glad you have been able to show me the splendor of these wonderful paints. I am looking forward to watching you paint more in your new “sketchbook” and show off more of these Beam paints. I know others will be cued up to purchase some for their own! Please take care of yourself and have a lovely day!
Ahh, this was so peaceful to work to. I got to glance at the colors and the progress of the little birdie and just relax as I swatched some new paints for a video.
Thankyou for this wonderful video! I had no idea these paints existed & have now just purchased some & a Palette Wrap, so excited & Anong is lovely to deal with. I Reached out to Anong as my order was coming to the UK & they were out of stock on the wrap so I asked if there would be an imminent re-stock as I would hold off (to save 2 lots of postage, customs & release fees). Low & behold that was the case, it's always worth reaching out to small businesses, they have many jobs to fulfil so are constantly busy & the good ones are more than happy to help where they can.
Excellent video! A beautiful handmade sketchbook and Blue Jay painting. I’m in middle Tennessee and the Blue Jays have been wonderful here. Thank you for sharing the information about Beam paint. I’m going to their website in a few minutes. I am looking forward to joining you on UA-cam and Instagram. I’ll be watching more of your videos. Have a great weekend. ~ Fran
I am SO happy that you are is reviewing BEAM paints ! I have been using them a lot in the last year and they never deceived me. They are just gorgeous. I love all the colors, specially the indigold wich is gorgeous and all the colors of the Georgia O’Keefe palette !
Thank you for this lovely and thorough introduction and review of Beam Paints. I recently received my order of 18 colours (plus a free stone of grape) and they are gorgeous. I love their character and how highly pigmented they are. And they smell soooo good! I also love that these are Canadian and from a wonderful female First Nations artist. I have just finished swatching and organizing them and can't wait to paint with them :)
Really cool video Denise! Thanks for showing us these paints and what better way to use them than in your own handmade sketchbook. Nice Jay painting too. They're great aren't they? Leslie the Bird Nerd (also a Canadian) has some great vids about them. My favorite call is the soft "squeaky gate" call. Hope you're doing well in your new digs.
Thanks Steve! I definitely thought about your bird paintings a lot during this process! I'll have to check out that channel and learn more about my new neighbors.
I had a buying spree and bought a lot of Beam Paints and I regret nothing to be honest. They're gorgeous and I plan to paint with them a lot more often.
I have an old pan of Winsor & Newton prussian blue that my mother purchased maybe 35 years ago, for a long time that was my absolute favourite colour because of its strong granulation, now however I’ve almost used it up. I was really disappointed when I purchased a new pan of it since it didn’t rewet at all and just seemed like a totally different colour as it had no texture at all, so that thing you mentioned about mulling of Prussian blue really made sense. Also, thank you Denise for the great video!
What a beautiful video! I have blue jays in my are too and whenever I see them it’s such a treat to see a flash of blue amongst all the green foliage in Summer time. These paints look really cool, but sadly I won’t be buying new art supplies for a looooooooooooong time.
Beautiful painting of a jay! I have the Shkaakmi'kwe Mother Earth 15 pallette which I love. My favourite colour is Almost Night which isn't part of that pallette but she sent it as a bonus colour. I do wish the colour list was included with the pallettes but that's my only critical feedback because everything else is on point. Thanks for reviewing these paints! Anong also has short and cute painting tutorials on Beam Paints Instagram which are delightful! Highly recommend all around.
tulips! This was lovely. Thank you. Just so peaceful and meaningful. I've been dreaming of making my own sketchbook. Now I must learn! Also drooling over those hand made paints. Thank you Denice. I hope you are well, I've been praying for you.
I’m still a huge beginner at watercolor, so I currently only have really cheap, local supplies, but as soon as I become more comfortable with using them, I will definitely be buying a set of these lovely paints. I’m so in love with that granulation!
Thank you, Denise. I follow your Skillshare classes; I’ve been wanting to make my own sketchbooks, now you’ve inspired me to do so, with confidence and instructions! Luv the eyes and blue jay paintings: amazing. 😱
This looks a beautiful set of paints and handle well in experienced hands ..If I was more experienced I would seriously consider a set like this, but I am just re learning my art after a very long break..I love how your painting came out and how lovely your hand made book is 😀
Fun video! I think i really like a few of the colours. I enjoy intermixing watercolour and gouache myself so the grey is very lovely to me! I also tend to LOVE most turquoise tones! Thanks.
I was so excited to see this upload because I bought a handful of Beam paints a couple weeks ago and they should be delivered tomorrow! I can't wait to try them out, especially that Indigold. I only bought a few (the Mayan set, Silver + Gold, and a bright pink and bright blue since those aren't quite mixable with the set) but I am definitely planning on picking up more if I enjoy working with them. Your swatches look beautiful so I'm sure I will!
I hope you fill up this sketchbook extra fast because the combination of your style with the personality of these paints is stunning! Also what you said about respectful sourcing as a counterpoint to vegan resonates with me. 💖
I loved that you had so much info about her. I didn’t know any of it but I do follow her on Instagram and Ive been thinking of getting her little sample card to try out water colors. It’s not my medium but she has a Hilma af Klint palette that I really want! I’m obsessed with af Klint’s art. Thanks for reminding me that I need to get on skillshare.
Woah these have travelled very far in order for me to find out about them! And I’m so glad they did. Companies like these deserve so much more publicity, especially here at home. Definitely getting added to my wishlist for the future 💖
I ordered myself a Mayan palette last weekend since she was having a sale (added the rose gold because I’m a sucker for that too). I love seeing their awesome potential in your videos!!
Thanks for much for this review! I'm Canadian and it's great to know about more new-to-me handmade watercolours! These look gorgeous and I hope to invest in them someday. Presently, the only handmade paints I have are from the Stoneground Paint Co., which is located closer to me geographically in Saskatchewan. (I'm in BC.) That jay is gorgeous!
Thank you for sharing this amazing work of art as the entire palette paint and all is just stunning. The story of the company and family is lovely -I will be looking forward to buying from them as I love to support female led small businesses esp given they are multi-generational. This video is an example of why I enjoy your channel so much. I learn so many things but I’m also introduced to things like this palette/company.
Loved this video, Very inspiring! I plan to try Bean. I have made a WC journal which I enjoyed filling, but they are a lot of work. I may have to try a skill share class. And welcome to TX from a fellow watercolor lover living in Houston!
I love your sketchbook! I bought myself some supplies for binding at the beginning of the year and I have yet to bind one. I should make one while I am in quarantine.
You paint so beautifully and those watercolors are just gorgeous. I have thought about making my own sketchbook but gave up right away. Maybe I will try again. Thank you and stay safe!🖤
I would like to see a more up to date video, on your favourite watercolour sets or palettes and see you create paintings with each. Love the videos, keep up the good work 🖤
Absolutely stunning work, as always! Your jay is vibrant and shows off these paints beautifully. I've made journals before using just plain copy paper, and it's been in the back of my mind to make my own watercolor sketchbooks for quite some time. Yours turned out lovely, definitely a good motivation for me to get to work on one.
I would love to try Beam paints. The colors look marvelous. I do book making to and love to do it. Thank You so much for this video. Love Terri Simmers.
I was so excited to see this video! I discovered Beam Paints in your 2020 palette video and ordered just 4 colors to try. I'm still waiting for them to arrive, but seeing the swatches here makes me want to order a few more!
I made my own watercolor sketchbook and I love it so much!! It was so worth the time and it's honestly my favorite sketchbook! It's so customizable with paper and cover. You can even mix paper! I loved that I wasn't scared to use it either. Also your skillshares are so nice 🤗♥️
@@InLiquidColor oh how fun! That would be such a fun memory keeper! It would be cool to do a flip through on your channel after trips 🤗 I also reccomend them for newer artist too that don't feel "good enough" to work in a nice sketchbook. I use mine as creative space to experiment in and have no pressure of producing nice artwork and so far I've loved everything I've made in it 😂
So fun fact, this palette got a 2.0 called the Minjeemin Eko Neezhing! It comes with ten colours, or you can pick your own, as it fits up to 14 paint stones. They also have the Tis'gan 6, which holds 6 stones and comes with different sets of colours depending on the outside print. I might be biased.
I would love to get as excited as you are for such a product... but years of studying restoration makes me wonder how this paint will react over time, how much beewax will be transferred on the paper (the solubility is low, sure, but you are also rubbing with a brush) and what is the "tree sap" inside the pigment. I love this in concept, the colours are stunning... but I think I still prefer a metal tin for my pan (yes, they are made of plastic, but I also refill them constantly) :(
D, The Steller's Jay are in our backyard. Boy, do they like to yell at us if we haven't moved fast enough away from the birdseed we've just thrown to them! Your bluejay is just lovely! My Silver black brushes aren't getting as fine a tip as yours-- do you think they are getting old? Thanks for showing us these lovely paints! 🧡
Stellars Jays are so lovely but I have heard that they can be a bit bossy haha. I do replace my silver black velvets about once a year with fairly heavy usage. The ones with the dull tips get to be used as the ones that I soften off edges with ;)
This video is awesome! Your reviews are so nicely put together. I love the blue jay you painted. There is a really big blue jay that lives in our yard and I love to look at it :) Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos and into these reviews! 💙💛🧡💙
As an indigenous artist from manitoulin, I'm so glad to see this business and the paints be shown love. Miigwetch!
So wonderful, im in North Bay Ontario Canada and I've heard many of my artist friends rave about these such a beautiful packaging
I just ordered my second palette. The colours are amazing!

The ones with the dull tips get to be used as the ones that I soften off edges with ;)
@@InLiquidColor :: SO bossy! Thanks for the brush "tips". Hahaha, get it? Hahaha! (I've been at home too long.) Love u. 🧡😆
Really really nice ☺️
This video is awesome! Your reviews are so nicely put together. I love the blue jay you painted. There is a really big blue jay that lives in our yard and I love to look at it :) Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos and into these reviews! 💙💛🧡💙
