He picked a young kid in his late teens from Southern California to do that video. It seems some of his work somewhere and was very intrigued and even went to talk to the kid and had him make this video to his song. I saw that on the special features of the "rattle that lock" Blu-ray.
Should have watch " live at Pompeii", solo was one of his best. Women sat next to me at the concert cried during this song as she told me about her son. He could handle oming back from war and what he had done. later committing suicide. Watch on of the great P.P sad video with over 8.5 million views. P.F. Agree with the other comments the DG solo Live at Pompeii 2016 is epic and one of his best even at 70 years old as he was then, complete mastery and control of what then was new material - DG = G.O.A.T
I don’t know if it’s exactly protesting against war. I mean obviously none of us want that. But sometimes it is warranted based on other leader’s/countries action. Not often, but on occasion it seems like the only way to resolve it. I wish that wasn’t so. But anyway, this song I think is more about the “boots on the ground”, how terrified they all are, on every side of any conflict. And the horrible choices they sometimes make, and the guilt snd regret they feel, and hoe their families and loved ones must feel. That’s what I get out of it anyway. There is a great live version of this in Pompeii from 2016 as well
The live version in 2016 in Pompeii is much more “punchy” with the band (Greg Phillinganes on keyboards, Guy Pratt on bass...) The chorus sung by backing vocalist Bryan Chambers is heartbreaking and makes the hairs on my arms stand up and brings tears to my eyes. Of course the final guitar solo is...
There is a great live version of this at Pompeii in 2016....David Gilmour plays the same amphitheater you saw in "Echos" live....
one of my favs by Gilmour. the live version, at Pompeii, 2016, is even better
Yeah! Much better!
Agreed, that version is one of his top 10 solo's ever!! And that is saying a lot!
Without taking sides at all - this song sums up what is happening in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine - SAD, SAD, SAD!
Great song ,you really need to hear the live at Pompei version. The song was about his sons experience in the Afghanistan

one of my favorites by the great david gilmour...I was lucky to see this song live...here in Chile...wow
what a great guitar solo starting at five minute mark. I've never heard a guitar scream in pain before.
And David plays on Live in Pompeii 2016many wonderful versions of pink floyd songs
