Tariffs will do nothing to solve the drug crisis in the US. If it's not one drug, it will be another. There's a demand and Americans willing to meet that demand. This is the most ruthless form of capitalism there is. Deal with the social issues that drive the drug trade and the demand will dry up.
Spot on! We need to spend more money on addiction research, but it's going to be an uphill battle! To me at least, addiction is up there with Cancer and Diabetes in terms of difficulty to find a cure for or treat. The biggest challenge of all, as you said, is probably fixing the social issues that drive the drug trade up and up. Yes! I know I'm not including Homeless addicts.

Hi CynthiaBlair, I'm confused. Doesn't the graph shown at 5:07 show a terrifying increase in overdose deaths in 2020 that corresponds with the Biden Administration ordering our southern border overrun? Doesn't this graph show overdose deaths generally increased throughout the Biden Administration until about mid-2023? Why do you write "Kudos to Biden admin for measurably bringing fentanyl overdose deaths down"? In 2020 the graph shows fentanyl overdose deaths at about 70k. The graph ends at about 92k and peaked in 2023 at about 110k. Please help me understand your comment. Thanks
No argument that Tump is full of BS. However, I'm 59 yrs old. For my entire life, the US govt, local police, all sorts of social services, etc., have been combating drug addiction and drug overdoses. Way too much effort at stopping supply, and never enough at stopping demand.
For each point that unemployment increases, 40,000 people die. Preventing recessions, or stopping them, goes some distance in keeping down demand for narcotics. Which party keeps putting us in recession? Which party has to keep cleaning up the mess? Which party led us to a soft landing from inflation without spiking unemployment, something economists generally didn't think was possible? That said, will Elon's DOGGY call for more -- or less -- funding of mental health services? What is the GOP's history with that?
And Trump will never address "demand" side either. He will cut funding and put another one of his "useful but tainted idiot"s in charge of the departments that have made actual but small differences in supply.

So, why don't we allow doctors to prescribe painkillers and mood elevators that are legally prescribed (and manufactured in regulated facilities) for people who need them? I know people who were on hydrocodone for years for arthritis pain so severe they couldn't work and barely got through their day. Then politicians literally told doctors to stop prescribing medicine, and these people were cut off instantly without a word of explanation from their doctors...and you're surprised they're looking for illicit alternatives?

Overdose deaths are only going down because so many addicts and recreational drug users have already died on Biden's watch. It's not like there is an unlimited supply to go around. Recreational users have wised up, and weed is legal in many states. It has little to nothing to do with efforts from the Biden administration. @@sergiosaunier I like the thought, but, knowing trump, he’ll just tell him that all the things going wrong are Biden’s fault, but he’s “going to fix it”, and they’ll believe every word.
Most Americans WANT to believe in a simple solution to every problem. They don't want to hear this long-winded, multifaceted solutions that require lots of agencies and red tape to maybe move the dial a little in the right direction. Trump supporters want to believe "Build that wall" will fix immigration, or "raise tareifs" will bring back jobs to America. The Dems problem is messaging, we need a simpler message and less elitist talk. I guess we've got to dumb it down unfortunately.
No they don't. trump supporters want to know that their Grand High Exalted Mystic Ruler hates the same people that THEY hate. Most of them KNOW he's full of it when he proposes simple fixes to complex problems but THEY...DO...NOT...CARE. So long as he hates who THEY hate, they will GLADLY follow him into the deepest level of H*ll.
"Fixing" immigration is relatively easy actually. You look at where they are from and make the people there no longer want to come to the US. People aren't going to want leave unless they think it will improve their(or their children) situation. Here are some options. 1) improve the situation in the other countries 2) run enough propaganda to convince people in the other countries that coming to the US wouldn't make much difference, maybe it will be even worse 3) same as 1 and 2 but redirected to another country 4) Since we are talking about the southern border, Mexico is a great candidate for that. Metaphorically this is still building a wall and with the right policies it can even count as "make them pay for it". If done correctly Mexico would still benefit so it is an offer they can't refuse. A Mexico size wall/trap would be much more effective than any physical barrier we can build. 5) Ruin the US so it is in fact not such a good place to move to.
It's not 'elitist talk', don't discredit it that way- but many people for reasons of *their own egos* have an aversion to expertise grounded in anxiety and fear about the idea that their deeply-held beliefs might in fact be unfounded... and even worse, that they might stand to lose face for this. The rise in well-understood, scientific social, political, and economic theories that contradict what R-voters have been propagandized to believe for decades are seen as a threat to them because if realized, and if they work, there is no possible way for said voters (in their own estimates) to save face and not be *humiliated* by the objective fact that they were stubbornly wrong for so long and likely cost not just money and time, but lives and their country's own future potential in doing so. What Democrats really need, unfortunately, is a way to 'play pretend' and give people that have doubled down on believing the confidence scheme they're victims of a social 'out' of responsibility for the social consequences of their actions, one that doesn't require damaging their egos in order to get the point across that they were wrong for so long simply because they were afraid admitting it and angry at people that they projected that fear onto.
@@blsdmfs1 elitism would be suggesting that people that have some higher than average quality 'deserve' to be in charge of society; I don't believe that, and in fact I dislike that there is such a divide in society, but I do believe that Republican voters are mostly projecting 'elite' status onto anyone with an intellectual leaning or that doesn't outright deny certain realities (which shouldn't require abnormal qualities to grapple with to begin with) because they are made deeply uncomfortable with how much the evidence in that space is objectively against them. It isn't 'elitist' to acknowledge that- it would be 'elitist' if I said that they don't deserve to vote as a result of not being educated, or not being intellectually gifted, or the like, but that's not my argument. What I am saying is that Republicans aren't going to be persuaded by being 'less elitist' and you're fooling yourself if you think otherwise- most of the anti-intellectualism isn't rooted in e.g. climate scientists *actually* turning up their noses at them, but *projection* of what climate deniers *imagine* must be happening when they are repeatedly told they are wrong and their egos refuse to let them accept this.
@@billbonu1639 Will believe it when I see it. The Republicans in Congress are already balking on this saying they won't pass it unless there is an offset somewhere else. Since trump won't tax the rich that means either higher taxes for the middle class (poor don't pay taxes, middle class pays the most thanks to trump), or the poor will lose some kind of service. Pretty easy to guess which it will be.

You can´t stop a demand by restricting the offer. That is very simple rule in a free market. It didn´t work with the prohibtion of alcohol either, it only makes the price for the demanded item go up. To fix the problem you´d have to get it by the roots, which means stop the demand. And that means investing heavily in mental health and social stability.
You can reduce use by restricting supply because the demand curve has a negative slope. That is a very simple rule in a market. "investing heavily in mental health and social stability" Reducing use of a deadly narcotic constitutes investing in mental health and social stability.

Have we ever considered that with all the people dying from fentanyl in that last few years, the overdose deaths are dropping at least in part because the users are just dying off without enough new ones to replace them?
It's a huge reason. Less new users less people dying. His trip to China is not having the impact people on here want us to believe. India is taking care of the precursor shortage.
Little PSA, not sure how true this is for other states, but in California, there's a rescue drug called Naloxone. You can get it over the counter. This can be handy if you find yourself in need to help someone quickly. There are plenty of horror stories with these losses, arm yourself with a little knowledge and save a life.
I feel that because the unemployment rate is so low, and more people are working that has to have something to do with it as well. People do really want to work and take pride in being able to help provide for themselves and their families.
The reason fentanyl potency has gone down is probably because the drug makers now realize that it's more profitable for them if their customers are alive.
I suppose it’s possible that potency is being reduced or that dealers are cutting the powder with more filler. That increases supply and reduces lethality.
Fentanyl was first developed in 1959 and introduced in the 1960s as an intravenous anesthetic. It is legally manufactured and distributed in the United States. So do ppl smuggle it into Mexico and then bring it back?
Another factor for fentanyl is the near elimination of Oxy prescriptions. With the Sackler family shut down, the healthy -> Oxy -> fentanyl funnel has stopped. So a reduction of Oxy addicts has impacted fentanyl use as well.
Something similar happened with quaaludes in the 1980s. The main component of the drug was very complicated to manufacture and was made in only a few places around the world. The US government worked with foreign governments and managed to get the companies to stop manufacturing and selling mass quantities of the necessary ingredient.
I always wanted to try one of those lol they were before my time! It’s impossible to get real street heroin here anymore.. so many people I know who use just want pure heroin (the stuff that starts out as poppy plants)
@xChaosReignsx No matter where you live, street heroin is going to be cut with something. The problem in the US is that it's being cut with Fentanyl which is extremely easy to overdose on. But the high from old-fashioned heroin and the manufacturer pharmaceuticals is essentially identical...the differences are mostly in the strength, how long it lasts and how quickly it dissipates. The rest of the differences are mostly just street lore.
The graph is consistent with the conclusions to which my last few decades of experience, observation, and reading have brought me, along with many of the small group of people trained in subjects from neurochemistry to economics who have made addiction the focus of their research, together with a small but growing minority of the public at large. One of these (I think inescapable) conclusions is that no one in national public life who pronounces prescriptions for the problem -- itself poorly defined! -- cares much about solving it.
I keep Narcan on me at all times. You can probably find it for free in your community (look for nonprofit organizations) or even for sale at your local pharmacy. You can save a life!
This is why I say that both sides are complicit in all the issues. Evil thrives when good people do nothing. @missano3856 But fentanyl is a prescription medication? It's prescribed by doctors, and the patients get hooked on it. This is almost unheard of in countries with socialised medicine because the doctors have no incentive to push fentanyl.
@ToothbrushMan Fentanyl is very, very seldom prescribed for outpatient use. OD's are being generated by illicit fentanyl of unknown strength and purity. People would be better off using heroin.

Majority of Addicts get treated by Intake Centers / Rehabs and the rest are in out patient programs... The biggest challenge of all, as you said, is probably fixing the social issues that drive the drug trade up and up.

Awesome job, thank you. I lost a young cousin to fentanyl a while back.

1) improve the situation in the other countries
2) run enough propaganda to convince people in the other countries that coming to the US wouldn't make much difference, maybe it will be even worse
3) same as 1 and 2 but redirected to another country
4) Since we are talking about the southern border, Mexico is a great candidate for that.
@@muhrichard8634 Wow. you just made a comment like an "elitist" and probably don't realize it.

Thank you for covering this topics
I feel that because the unemployment rate is so low, and more people are working that has to have something to do with it as well. People do really want to work and take pride in being able to help provide for themselves and their families.
Yup. My grandma was taken off her Fentanyl too. She almost died from withdrawls. Not cool either.
Punishing the average American for a problem not under their control
As part of health department and fire department i can tell you this is a big lie, its actually getting worse but most people know this.
Huge drug bust here near NYC when they tested Extasy tablets...it all had Fentanyl.
Oxy is literally addicting. Worse than heroin. Look it up.
You are a man of integrity and I thank you for it
my daughter died this june 11 .. if only they could have done this before she died... she was 31
I’m so sorry for your loss.
That is terrible I am so sorry. You never get over the loss of a child I know because it happened to my wife and me.
You can become a mother figure to lots of people by volunteering in addicts groups and telling your story
But they took pain medicine and some mental medicine that helped people and the suicide rates went up and nobody talking about that
Populist autocrats never solve problems, because without problems you wouldn't need populist autocrats
Well stated Chris. Much harder to fix than it is to complain about it.
Its not coming fr Mexico, its us citizens bringing in!
Its coming from China, do some research
Thank you so much for this information!!!!
Thank you Chris.. right no one knew
Thanks media….. shouldn’t you be reporting the news?????? Would’ve been good to have this message in July 2024
He is always going to take credit for other ppls efforts to fix things coz that is who he is
I don't think people know. I didn't know. I was going to vote for Biden even after the debate.
I keep Narcan on me at all times. You can probably find it for free in your community (look for nonprofit organizations) or even for sale at your local pharmacy. You can save a life!
This is why I say that both sides are complicit in all the issues. Evil thrives when good people do nothing. Why did the Democrats not push all the accomplishments of the administration and the direction we were moving in? Why did they let the Republicans set every narrative?? They didn't fight at all!! If they would have done their jobs and fought for the people instead of their own back accounts, a lot of this could've been avoided. If the Democrats weren't so weak, a lot of Americans wouldn't have voted for a fake strongman! More like a straw man!
The ONLY THING TOUGH about Trump, is his mouth. It is hard to get that much crap out of that little hole.
It's too complicated. You think the average voter understands "precursor chemicals"?
This is how you combat the lies. Good job.
"This is how you combat the lies."
Which lies, exactly, in this case?
Trump shouldn't even run a 7-11.
We're in trouble.
True, Kamala would be much more qualified to run a 7-11. She is Indian, after all
Yeah? Things were great under Biden? Give us a break!
Get a life. The is MAGA COUNTRY NOW

@DuckMan-xi6iz saying A guy worth 7 billion dollars can't run a 7-11 is adult talk? The same adults that spell Trump "tRump" Like a snot nose 3rd grader. Not to mention you voted for the most incompetent presidential candidate in history lol.
THANK YOU JOE 😊 ❤
how about newsom-harris in 2028
My neighbor lost his 15 year old daughter... He went upstairs to check on her, and she was dead. Fentanyl took another life! My heart breaks...
It's worth pointing out that this Fentanyl epidemic is only in the US.
Fentanyl addiction is almost unknown in other countries.
Why?
Heroin
@missano3856 ??
Because people use heroin instead or sometimes krokodil
@missano3856 But fentanyl is a prescription medication? It's prescribed by doctors, and the patients get hooked on it.
This is almost unheard of in countries with socialised medicine because the doctors have no incentive to push fentanyl.
@ToothbrushMan Fentanyl is very, very seldom prescribed for outpatient use. OD's are being generated by illicit fentanyl of unknown strength and purity. People would be better off using heroin.
LA County is just now getting around to putting Narcan in all of its schools?! I worked in a school district along the East Coast four years ago and we had that in every school, even the primary schools (pre-K through 2nd grade). Things happen, and it's so easy to use to save a life.
LA County also has more people (10M) than something like 40 of the states do.
Sadly, the desperation which also led to opioid addiction, will soon become worse yet again.. Hopelessness leads to dependency of all types, prescription pharmaceuticals like Ativan, Xanax, etc’, alcohol and food… self medicating behaviors require non judgmental discussion, and real action as you reported, ty Chris, right you are, I had no idea… 💙🙏🏻
Since democrats are the only ones feeling hopeless, I guess we won't ever have to vote again.
Fetanyl seems to be a favorite at Republican gatherings... just ask Gaetz, Greene, Comer, Jordon, et al! Whatta "party"!
Hunter Biden lol
Trump doesn't know how to solve any real problems.
Watch David Feldman. I agree with him that this tariff BS is just that. Keeping him dominating the news cycle. That’s all he cares about.
Trump’s White House Doctor was handing out fentanyl
He was the White House doctor during the Obama administration, too. In any case, asinine post.

Perhaps if Americans didn't like dope so much, maybe?
The counterculture really did a number on the country 60 years ago.

Imagine if this report had have been trumpeted around the country when the deaths started falling.... well that would have been something.
A.G.
So the question is did anything that he did help and the other question is is he really going to impose 25% tariffs on good for Mexico because mind you your cars GMC and a whole other bunch of them come from Mexico to the United States so that means all your vehicles that are shipped from Mexicocar manufacturing plants will go up by 25% that’s up ton of money and why is he punishing us in his mind he’s doing that of course but he’s not. He’s going to be punishing the United States consumers.
Start buying Toyota.
So true. I never heard the reduction. I heard more stoppages at the border but not all those points that lead to a reduction
look within your country , stop the use of it , will stop the sell of it , stop blaming other countries for your problems
Dems really dropped the ball here with this news. Who the heck runs that org is pretty bad at it this year.
Not overdosed, it is poisoned.
