My mum was diagnosed with COPD some 10 years a so ago and was told if she didn't quit smoking she'd have 5 years but if she quit around 15 years. She never quit smoking, her breathing over the years just worsened and 6 years later she was diagnosed with bowel cancer, after treatment to all our amazement she beat cancer, however she lost so much weight and muscle that any kind of activity was harder on her, her stomach had shrunken so much she coils only eat small portions of food, she was never able to gain the weight 4 years on from beating cancer. I was so used to her having good and bad days with her breathing but for a week her breathing was really bad and she refused to go to hospital because she was so scared of covid 19 and as always said ill get through this. Then unexpected to us all my stepfather awoke in the morning and my mother was dead.
Her last words to him was I'm not going to die on you 😢 that was just 6 weeks ago and I miss her terribly, it's been the worst time of my life however knowing she is no longer suffering from this awful condition and can now finally be at peace gives me huge comfort. I smoke myself but am now trying to quit for her as I know she's watching over me and wouldn't want me to go through the same fate

Yeah my Mom was diagnosed with Emphysema back in 1994 and she battled the disease until 2014. She did good as her condition was rated as severe as the scales would allow as far as available equipment in the 1990’s could rate. And yes, she was a heavy smoker for forty years at her first diagnosis. Still miss her, 😢

My grandad has smoked since he was 11 years old and had been diagnosed with COPD around 8 years ago it never bothered him for a long time but the last 2 years it really started to effect him. He would stand out of his chair take 3 steps and clench his chest trying to catch a breath. He wasn’t the same smartly dressed loving man I had known my whole life. When he was in the hospital he weighed only 5 stone due to him not eating cause of the COPD. He passed away last January i plead to everyone who has a family member or friend who’s a heavy smoker please do everything you can to get them to stop smoking

If they don't want to quit u can't force them anyway. Just like my brother he's a heavy smoker and won't quit of course they know the harmful consequences everyone knows still they don't care it doesn't matter what u say to them. They're not gonna quit till lts too late that's when they start to regret smoking...

Been living with it since 2012. People not being able to breathe is so bad at times. Please I beg you stop smoking before you lose your health. Once this starts it only gets worse. I’m 49 with a 17yr old and gosh knows he needs me and so do your kids 😢 Praying for all 🙏

I’m almost 23 and been vaping since I was 18… about a month ago I noticed a slight wheeze when exhaling, brushed it aside until today it was noticeably worse, started looking into it and started panicking. Have I really ruined my life of healthy lungs?

I have COPD, I was grossly overweight, barely able to anything especially after I quit smoking . But I started by walking, 1st day my goal was to walk for 15 minutes. I've worked my way up to long hikes, dropped 75lbs. And it has helped tremendously. I still get flair ups, exposure to cold air makes it difficult to breathe, and "normal" colds (for everyone else) can incapacitate me for 2 weeks. But overall I'm doing well - stopped taking all the COPD meds about 4 yrs ago, except my rescue inhaler - which I've only used a handful of times these past 4 yrs.

William Pearson 19 is very young to have copd. I was 34 when I was diagnosed and was told then it was very rare to have this at such a young age. Have you had second opinions about this? Please don't misunderstand me but you may have something more going on than just this. Have you tried seeing a specialist about getting a lung transplant? Never give up as you can control this disease but quitting smoking is key to healthier lungs. I've had copd now for 22 years so believe me when I say there's help out there. You must seek it out. I'm in my end stage now. I'm on oxygen 24/7. I am no longer able to cook or clean my own home. I'm not able to go and do anything as it takes every ounce of energy I have just to get dressed for a doctor appointment. I had a lung specialist lie to me at the age of 46 when he told me I was too old for a lung transplant. I found out years later that he had lied to me. I traveled 4 hrs one way to do the testing and everything needed to see if I would be a good candidate for the transplant. By this time my lungs had become severely damaged and I wasn't able to get the transplant. I was told had I not been lied too, I would not be losing my life today from this horrible disease. Much luck to you and try to stay positive. If you haven't had any other specialists look at you that would be my suggestion. I wish you all the best. Also, copd is not an inherited disease. You say you grew up around it? You are very young so don't give up. Reach out for all the help you can get. I wish you all the best!

@Aallison K why would anyone choose to smoke regularly for 16 years if one was not unable to stop? Cigarettes don't increase quality of life, nor your life span, and the person smoking it stinks. It's bad for others around you, and you have to spend your money to smoke it. So, why is this a choice if you're able to stop smoking and flip everything I said to it's opposite and gain all that by not smoking.

At various times in my life I have been diagnosed by various Doctors as having Asthma, Emphysema and COPD.
What really happened is that I burned my lungs at work. Very hot gasses got under my face protector when I got to close to a furnace at 1500* F. We should have been given full face masks to protect us when working on these furnaces. .
But the Doctors never want to blame an Employer because then there might be a Law Suit. Then the Doc would have to do some extra work by testifying in Court. So we suffer and suffer and suffer.

COPD is a treatable disease. It does require a management strategy for early stages starting with smoking cessation. Combination therapies can be used reduce dyspnea and
improve lung function but might not be possible for patients with long-term declines in FEV1. Controlled trials have been completed to validate early findings.

can the same be said about covid 19... im finding a pattern on both types... can copd patients be at greater risk of the covid19 virus... i think yes.... if so... CAN COPD TREATMENTS ASSIST IN HELPING TODAYS COVID19 PATIENTS. NOT AS A CURE BUT A SLOW TOOL OF RECOVER WHILE YOUR BODY CREATES ANTIBIOTICS TO FIGHT THE COVID19 VIRUS... IF SO... THE ASSUMPTIONS OF THE COVID19 DATA THAT WAS WRONG IN THE BEGINNING MIGHT HAVE VALUE HERE..... IF SO... THE LOCKDOWN WAS GOOD FOR THE 2 OR 3 WEEKS NEEDED TO SECURE THESE AMERICAN LIVES THAT HAVE COPD.... THEN ARE THEY NEED TO BE CAREFULLY EXAM TO IDENTIFY COVID19 EARLY FOR THESE TYPES OF POOR AMERICANS... I UNDERSTAND NOW... THESES AMERICANS NEED HELP... WE NEED A TACTICAL PLAN IN ALOT OF AREAS, IN MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND TESTING... FROM STATE TO STATE..CITY BY CITY.. COMMUNITY BY COMMUNITY.... ALOT OF AMERICANS MAY BE AT RISK AND THESES AMERICANS WITH THIS TYPE OF CONDITION MUST BE EDUCATED BEFORE SOME OF THE LOCK DOWNS REOPEN.... THESES POOR BABIES.... THEIR AMERICANS... DAMN IT... Smoking alone is unlikely to give you COPD by the age of 28. You should be tested to see if you have Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Disease. If you have this genetic condition, smoking, second-hand smoke and air pollution will do far more damage to your lungs than to the lungs of someone without this genetic feature. Also, even if you don't smoke and live in pristine air, every time you have a respiratory infection there will be damage to your alveoli causing emphysema. It is important that you get tested. A weekly infusion of the missing substance taken from blood donations can slow down the progress of your COPD quite dramatically but it is extremely expensive unless it is covered by your health system.

All I can say is that I'm so glad that I have never smoked a day in my life, although I've been exposed to it in the past,
but unfortunately, my own mother who smoked from the age of 13 all the way through age 58 suffered from Stage IV COPD & had to be on oxygen therapy, which was pretty difficult to witness! :(
She died a year ago at the age of 61, but not through COPD! I tried to get her to stop smoking 10 yrs prior, but she stated to me that she would quit only when she felt like doing so...

Quitting smoking is aboslutely possible and doable, not easy, but possible. I smoked from the age of 13 'till I was 18, ever since I picked a cig for the first time the thought that 4 of my grandpa's 5 siblings had died of cigarrette smoking diseases/illnesses, including emphysema, and how painful those deaths must have been for them, feeling that you can breath less and less with each passing day until you can breath no more must be something truly horrific, like drowning very slowly.... with the help of God and steel self determination I could quit smoking and so can anybody else. Trust me, that effort does pay off in the short, medium and log term. Btw, I also quit drinking alcohol. I quit both vices back in August 2005, the best decision I have ever made, for myself. God bless you all.

Having chest drains sticking out of my body after suffering from another collapsed lung because of the damage smoking caused me has led to me giving up . I had my last cigarette two days before surgery stood out the front of the hospital I could barely inhale anything. I still have a cigarette in my home which I keep as a reminder to myself and others it’s my last cigarette and it’ll never be smoked as I don’t intend to go through the shit I’ve been through again. Tobacco is evil every now and then it calls to me go on smoke me it says I say uh no and I picture all the images of the photos I’ve taken of my time in hospital and that puts me off wanting to light up that cigarette. I hope my mental strength is strong enough to keep this addiction at bay only time will tell. I hope he found a way .

I was diagnosed 6 years ago with copd and was told by a lung specialist life span for me will be either 5 years and if I’m looking after myself 7 years and he said some have even lived up to 11 years. Because I’ve been seeing number 11 randomly everywhere, I think 🤔 it’ll be 11 years and yes PLEASE PEOPLE stop smoking 🚬 I can’t even go to vintage car shows cause they rev their car and the smell of burning 🥵 tyres and exhaust honestly nearly killed me, thank god it was by the ocean 🌊 so I walked as fast as I was able to the sea to breath. The truth not sugar coating as my specialist had put to me was at least I’ll know how I will die, lung failure in my sleep 😴. Well what can I say I’ve died many times before and came back and it’s not that scary and you do go somewhere else nicer than earth 🌏 I just don’t wanna leave my little daughter, not yet 😔💞

I’m not a smoker but have had car accident, push bike accident, trauma does this to a person, COPD that is. Pulmonary fibrosis the lungs don’t stress, live in a peaceful environment, try and be around happy positive people, cause of you don’t the lungs will continue to scar. 🙏🏼👼🥰💕

    • @syedjaffar953
      @syedjaffar953 5 років тому

Blade Woods it has no treatment i beleive brother, but one can avoid the symptoms of it like coughing(which brings thick mucus with it) by not smoking ciggrets or anythng and doing breathing excercises.
Post script:- whoevr advocating about smoking does not cause copd then they are wrong. Smoking causes bronchitis which is inflamation of our lung tubes(bronchial tubes) which last for a period of 2-3 months and during this disease, that person cough a lot and produces a lot of mucus, perhaps repeated acute bronchitis disease periods(2-3 months) like these for multiple years(like probably 4-5 years) can cause this copd condition which is gradually irreversible Which ultimatly leads to emphysema which is the most severe form of copd where one loses normal structure. Soo whover who have never smoked then do not ever smoke up and For the people who smoke need to stop That is the only way of reversal of normal function of lungs. Thankyou

ok I think it will decrease very soon. it's the older generation (baby boomers) that smoked much much more than younger generations, and these are the people who are all of a sudden now at the age of getting sick. So it's like the society had a build up of smokers before, now they're just old enough to see the bad symptoms show. However, we should be hopeful that as smoking decreases in our society, we expect COPD prevalence to decrease
