It was good to see the Citroën fire up , I hope Jeff finds a buyer for her and one day who ever buys her will be willing to send you some pictures of her all finished.
Tuning the ignition timing by ear, no strobe or timing marks needed. That takes me back to my first car. What a great video this week, really captivating.
The Citroen HY is the blue print for all commercial vans since it was first introduced to the market in the early 50's. The HY was one of three engineering briefs at Citroen S.A. , along with the VGD & the TPV, the three became the most ground breaking and inovative designs in automotive history, influencing everything that followed. We are looking at an example of one of the most important artifacts in automotive history.
Absolutely fantastic. Loved that one dude. What an awesome bit of kit. Hope amber wasn't too jealous. Looked like a awesome farewell too. Beyond excited for the "big one" wahooooo
Absolutely brilliant, just loved the way you didn’t give up trying to get it going, I’ve helped with many a old car and van and truck, it’s so rewarding when you see the finished project going and drive “ well done 👍 have great travels on your adventures and enjoy yourselves in Portugal matey cheers 🍻
This is basically the same engine as in the DS 19. It's first itteration appeared on the Traction Avant in 1935, it's follow up developments powering the iriginal DS/ID 19, DS/ID 21, DS 21/23 EFI, then all the CX (2000, 2400, 25 GTI) up till 1991. These old Citroen engines are indistructable.
As a subscriber and owner of a HY78 campervan, off course I allready noticed this HY Pick-up truck in the background of the Sprinter motor conversion video's. I own my 1967 HY van since 1991! I was nice to see this video but was wondering if you used a manual with the measures about ignition timing and so on. The top dead point on the flywheel is a 6mm hole in the flywheel corresponding with another hole he passes by when he rotates. Well anyway, its running. The HY van model was made from 1947 untill 1981 and this blue one is one of the later models, 1970 or later. I can see that because of some details that changed over de years. This HY72 means that it has a 1628cc/45hp motor. HY78 has a 1911cc/58hp motor.
Blimey just watched this and thought out I was thinking “I’ve got a tank for that” as I’m intending to make my HY an EV. Anyway this was a year old so I guess the French Fancy is long gone by now.
I love these old Citroën vans, they are so ugly that they have gone around and become beautiful. Don't forget to put in some antifreeze, I know of several cases where people was working on motors putting pure water in, then forget about it. Then winter came with frost and they got a perfectly good motor destroyed.
You boys and your toys making all that mess but no wonder Emma the facked lol off, You love making all that mess and getting all them tools out but at least it didn't end on the Scrapheap well done
@@colinhamer6506 Well aware, actually an engine that old probably wants additive in standard unleaded fuel too, it probably expects the fuel to be leaded and needs it for lubrication. My first car needed 1/2 a bottle of additive with every tank of unleaded fuel.
@@daveamies5031 moving unleaded was a pain changing timing valves etc a lot got scrapped because of that change it needed to be done though but eathonol in petrol is a big problem for older stuff anything rubber needs to be changed and it eats brass as well
Regrettably, after one of those interrupted restorations, cars as seldom as the HY are basically rendered parts cars, or just a better frame for someone already having a complete one in a comparable version (as long as documents still are found ...) Edit: Yes, You can get a lot of the needed parts from the right people in Germany, France and probably other places I wouldn't know of, but still it would be on the downside of the "massive demand", as even a restorer with some expertise would need a same-year version sample of the car to re-build "to spec" what You can NOT buy. She's worth it anyway, over-engineered as each'n any Citroën of that pre-PSA era is. Cheers
I would SMASH a camper converion on that bad boy!! That is impressive.. It is a beautiful car. The body looks in good shape. I hope he restores it completely
Man, I wish I had the money for this! I've loved these vans for years.
Man, that was worth waiting half an hour for such a brilliant result -- well done guys!
I'm going nuts! I actually teared up when she started running. What a great old girl. ❤

It was fun watching you guys work through that.
And that ending shot with your van and matching trailer in use, looked so damn good.
That was great to see the old H.A start up after all those years stood and you have to say they look amazing.
Great job. So much fun tinkering with usable classics like these!
Plenty of Cosby being used, great to see the old lady run, idling and everything!
Looks like it is in wonderful shape, not much rust. Amazing vehicle.
Those …little wonky eyes… are seriously cute! 🌀💚🌀Lance doesn‘t easily give up his toys or his humans!
What a beautiful old lady! So good to see her going again 😊
What a beautiful old van! I hope it gets the owner it deserves.
Also, sounds like you are off on your travels again, can't wait to see that.

And she lives.... I was literally willing that engine to fire lol. What a joyous machine she looks..
Absolutely brilliant, totally agree with you CJ old ones are the best 🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍
SUPER cute ! I would get professional restorers to work on that. It will need to be totally disassembled and all part examined.
Superb lads, what a weekender it will make, probably more.

Great vlog. Fantastic, simple engines, where have the gone?
Nice to an old motor like being made roadworthy once more. 👍🏻👏🏻❤️
Always wanted one of those they were reasonably affordable before every coffee stall discovered them
Gorgeous colour blue ... its got some style to it .. well done in getting her started up! ... I cant wait till the nx ep :))
She's Alive!!!!
Really enjoyed that bud! Would LOVE to have the space and the money for it but hopefully it goes to a good home
Here in France the Citroen H is known affectionally as "nez de cochon" = pig's nose.
Love this!
I would love to build a camper on that chassis

loved it . my type of spannering . points and twin leading brake shoes lol
PROJECT BLEU!
She’s a beautiful old girl.
Great video really enjoyed watching this
You do know wheeler dealers did a engine conversion on one of these? Might be worth a look?
Damn good job
So now you just need to put a new chassis underneath it and put a V8 in there and stretch out the front end a little bit to fit the V8 LOL
vous avez un trou de 6 mm dans le carter d'embrayage pour mettre une pige pour régler le point d'allumage !
Im a bit more confident in getting my 1988 camper back running its not ran since before covid lol 😆 2 litre carb engine .
Ahh she’ll fire no worries! 🤟
It’s like a cartoon character
Wheeler dealers did one of these mate

How can I contact Jeff please? I just love this vehicle
Hi
Spectacular
Class!
Road trip!!
My 74 Citroen HY Van won’t idle. The engine starts fine and stays on when I apply gas but shuts off when idling. Any suggestions? Thank you
Hi you will need to pop the carb off and soak it it petrol then use a compressor to blow out the jets.
Hope that helps.
Geoff
@@geoffclark2411 Hi Geoff, I'll give this a try and get back to you - thank you so much!
@@geoffclark2411do you have a video you can link here to properly clean the carburetor? 🙏🙏
Top mate!!
Great vlog 👍
Tres bon, mes ami!
e10 fuel needs to be considered with the Citroen
Well they were using a boat outboard fuel tank, and most outboards can't take e10 either.
@@daveamies5031 granted but having ethonal in petrol is not good for older engine's

All the UA-cam BEV car reviewers would love the size of that glove box😂😂😂
The dancing reminded me of DuellingBanjos.
Sweet. ☺
Should have had new spark plugs new wires and change the oil
so cool.
Why do people think that revving seven bells out of the running vehicle helps to start the dead one?
Maybe a stupid question but how is that so rust free
Been in a garage for 40 years 😅
It’s French - French cars NEVER rust do they!
It had a restoration started on it 8 years ago then abandoned as Geoff got busy with work so it’s sat dry indoors ever since

Is that not a 6volt system?
No, I thought the same at first, but it had a alternator instead of a dynamo. 1972 so i guess it had all changed over by then.
you didn´t work much with classic enginges, didn´t you?! hahaha we made it start in minutes hahaha working with beetles/buses.....
