Toronto traffic is the most soul destroying thing I've ever experienced.
The problem is the city continues to allow events to be held on lakeshore even when Gardiner is under construction. Last time I spend 50 mins just existing at Spadina because there are Sikhs indians parading on lakeshore.
I wish we had this same level of anger and news coverage on our transit systems. This wouldn't be a problem if we had viable alternatives to driving.
Toronto is filled with nimbys who think ppl taking the train are poor and worse

America CLEARLY demonstrated fifty years ago that just building MORE lanes/expessway doesn't make commuting faster.
Then explain how closing a lane makes it take 5x longer?
I was in Boston for my studies 15 years ago, the traffic was horrible. I went back last year, the traffic is significantly better after they spend the money to widen the I-93/Big Dig

Canada mostly sucks at large infrastructure projects (even just maintenance)
8 years to build a 4 stop subway line in Toronto. 3 years to double the Guanzhou subway from 6 to 12 lines (not stations). Go figure.
Construction is just extremely slow in Canada. Other countries would push the construction ahead and find this critical to complete asap.
There are no other countries similar to Canada. (Australia is likely the closest comparison check what their traffic issues are like)
Canada is to corupt to such a thing. Better to have 5 guys working to retirement on each project.

Um, the average cycling speed is around 20 km/h. At that speed, 13 km comes up to around 40 minutes. One would be more exhausted too. So might as well drive at that point.

@@iiuh1 Um, it is always important to judge these topics based not on your personal experience or those you know, BUT based on general performance. In that regard, a 40 min bike ride before work on a hot day like today would be something most would not want to go through. If you are the exception, bravo and just make sure you do wear proper skin protection though.
@eufrosniad994 I mean 40 min is being generous and would be a pretty leisure pace. Not to mention on a cheap e-bike that would barely be any exertion to go 13km
Dude also works at a hospital which I would imagine has shower facilities.
To each their own I guess, but I just find it very odd this guy gets his little segment on the news here because he chooses to take the worst form of transportation 13km across the city and complains that it takes him an hour.

Transit is neglected in canada. It's basically just in cities and only Toronto and Vancouver have decent access.
Exactly. The 24hrs Queen St and Dundas street cars go right through Leslieville, most of the the residential areas are within a 10-17min walk from where the street car stops. The Queen Street street car will stop directly at St. Joseph's health center. where he works and is a direct route. it doesn't make any sense.

@@theastuteangler Lol....ya sure that's what it is. You could put a highway on top of the buildings....roof top to roof top. Never at any point has there been more space available for another top side highway in the city, just like every city pretty much in the world. What they need is a new subway under the Gardener from Oakville to Cherry beach.
@@dougtheslug6435 He has a point. Montreal has a highway tunnel built right under their downtown core... Toronto should look at doing the same so that everyone doesn't have to use two highway lanes to get in and out of the city.
Toronto is one of the world's NIMBY centres. Don't build those highways getting into the city. Don't build those subway lines. And here we are, relying on a crumbling highway as a critical entrance and exit to the downtown core.
How abt closing gardiner completely for 6-8 months and getting this done once it for all, instead of dealing with crawling traffic for 3 yrs...

I drove to downtown Toronto last Sunday it was a horrific experience. I never really go downtown. But that had to be the worst driving experience I've ever had. I'm going to avoid Toronto like a plague.

The TTC subway is decent in terms of service, but on the GTHA scale, it is very mediocre.
Other countries: 3 months to complete Canada: 3 years + delays, Contractors paid based on time they can close off the highway

An alternative to driving? Madness! We didn’t pave paradise and put up a parking lot just to use efficient and effective public transit!

These repairs only take couple days in Asia but it takes couple years in Canada.
Why not consider taking public transit? I thought toronto had quite robust public transit system? Especially coming along the shore with GO train.
Notice over the past few years there are more SUVs and trucks on the road. They're bigger and heavier, which means there will be worse traffic congestion since they take up more space and accelerated road damage which will necessitate more frequent and longer repair.
Desentivize the use of these vehicles since they're contributing to most of the problems.
More punishment isn’t how you treat your residents well, with respect and dignity. If in other countries the roads can be rebuilt much quicker - months not years - and with better material to withstand heavier vehicles then why can’t we? And if you’re talking about pickups you should look at the impact of trailer tractors and larger eg dump trucks vs suv and pickups. Not even the same ballpark.

Imagine all the employees were to come back office at once. Right now it's 2 to 3 days on office for some .

Well maybe if you live in Leslieville you should take the TTC, and have one less car causing traffic chaos.
I mean it’s not like millions of dollars a year in taxes aren’t being spent for you spoilt Torontonians to have easier access to public transit or anything.
what's sadder is that even with the gridlock, Public Transit could take 50% longer for those who are forced to drive to work.
Why the city needs more east-west transit. Almost needed is a subway line on many more major east-west roads, e.g. Lawrence, Sheppard (Extended), Finch, Steeles...
......Remove the Bike Lanes and then the Vehicles have some where to park. The Cyclists are eating up valuable road space that is needed to solve the traffic problem. They should not be on our roads. And many do not wear helmets, they have no insurance or drivers license or license plate. And they do not obey the rules of the road. The Gridlock is costing the economy. Get rid of the bikes to help the traffic. Common Sense.....
Isn’t there a subway or Go train? Maybe even the UP express. If you start after 6am and live in the city you have many options

The fact that someone from Leslieville’s best option to get to the west side of the city is taking the gardener is insane.
In 2027 they’ll close the next section down for another 3-5 years and repeat for the whole gardener. Finally to repeat the process. It’s corruption and disdain not incompetence. They hate you.

Car infrastructure eventually kills itself and the drivers. Maybe the city shouldn't have sprawled so bad.
Take public transit, save the gas and money idling a car in traffic, on top of parking fees in Downtown.
Now you know what its like when Im trying to get home on a Friday during the summer and our roads are all jammed because of all the cityiots are coming up to cottage country!! My drive was 25 mins now its double.

RTO is so great. Show up to an office and all meetings are still virtual. They need to reduce RTO days and rotate it so that businesses can still survive and traffic is reduced. Also someone needs to create a proper bypass that isn't 2 lanes!!!!!!

in BC vancouver here, construction on major traffic routes takes up at 8 years. Currently granville / broadway, and winston / bainbridge road block constructions have been on going for 6+ years, I rarely see anyone working, this is the efficiency of Canada
Just Park your Vehicle at a TTC Parking Lot and Take the Subway Downtowne rather.

If you cater to cars, then you get more cars. If you make it wider, bigger, larger, then induced demand will fill it. Example: Katy Freeway

I work all over southern ontario in construction. I live an hour outside of downtown Toronto. When i have to work downtown some days it can be 3-4 hours to get home. Its not even worth my time really. I question my life everytime i gave to do it.

Unless transit doesn't get you where and when you need to go both ways. Or if your tram route in Amsterdam is down for the same time and now you have to bike, doubling your commute time, and your knee hurts from a prior bike crash.
20 minutes just to drive 13 km on a highway? I used to commute 15 km in about 12 minutes, in a city, with lights every few hundred metres. 20 minutes for 13 km on a highway with no lights is ridiculous.

Hilarious…I used to drive that for 2 yrs TO to Waterloo…then TOronto Airport to Waterloo for 6 years…115 then 100 km each way. Suck it up , quit or rent a room folks !
