This hit home! So relatable ! The feeling of “I don’t know how to do this” “what gear do you need” or being looked at different by others! I loved this video ! Yesi, you are amazing !
Thank you for all the wonderful comments! I hope to be climbing more mountains and to take more adventures around the world. To follow my adventures visit my instagram: yesi.abby . Thanks again to REI and the MODOC stories film crew.
This hit me so hard, growing up feeling the same way and going and doing all the things I’ve done and traveled. I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud of a film.
Mexicans have a wonderful cultural heritage. Most whom I have had the chance to befriend in this country have been salt-of-the Earth kind of folks. Our outdoor community can only benefit from the diversity they bring to it. Thanks REI for sharing this touching story!
So beautiful, absolutely beautiful. So relevant, so real. I was also that young girl leading my family and friends on new hikes. I'm now 26 and continue to introduce my new loved ones to the outdoors. I just came back from leading a group of 14 womyn on a 3 day/ 2 Night backpacking trip. Keep trecking because WE ARE HERE!!! 😗😗😗😗 Gracias por esta historia y por este video. Aqui estamos y no nos vamos. Que viva la lucha inmigrante!!! Un abrazo desde Sacramento, Ca
Wow, what a beautiful inspiring story!!! Keep them coming REI!!!! More than race (at least how I see it), this is about the sacrifice that every immigrant parent makes for their children, and bravo to Yesenia for pushing herself!!!!!!
Thank you, Yesi & REI for this well done, honest, heartfelt, and illuminating video! “All the gear photos in magazines were full of white people... and I didn’t know HOW to access the outdoors places” I can TOTALLY relate! I’m not Latina, but as a person of color who went to summer camps (sometimes on scholarships) as a kid, I deeply felt like the forest was my kindred place on this earth. But because I did not know how to access wild spaces on my own outside the context of my structured summer camp setting, my outdoor life was lost to me for over 30 years of adulthood. In this past year (2018-2019), with the help of UA-cam and internet searches, I have re-discovered and reconnected with my heart’s outdoor passion. I slept in a tent for the first time in over 30 years this summer, and have been hiking local & regional wooded trails more & more regularly... AND, to celebrate my 60th birthday next month, I’ll be hiking on the Appalachian Trail! Thank you, Yesi, for all you do to help others embrace and lay rightful claim to life-giving, life-sustaining, beautiful outdoor spaces and sports!! 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
Very awesome!! I am to a Mexican American! Loving the Outdoors! Love hiking 🥾 and camping ⛺️ Now that I’m a Dad I hike and camp with my son ! Showing him the wonders of nature!
To see someone who always dreamed of doing something they thought they couldn't do and achieved it, because of what they been told what not to do because of what others say they can't be do to their race. I'm happy she's enjoying what she always dreamed of doing. *Just remember this don't let others control your life for there entertainment.*
It's very nice to see something positive regarding the Latin culture in the U.S. . Kudos to everyone involved in the making of this short but meaningful story!!!!
This video is telling such an amazing story. Now, I just wanna get out there and succeed. Basically, it's a motivational video. And this girl, she's amazing!
What a great story! It's always interesting to observe that differences in mindset between generations within a family. Earlier generations focused on survival and building a better life which paved the way for new generations to see the world differently and participate in outdoor recreation.
This film was shown during Boise's Backcountry Film Festival. ... Tears flowed through my cheeks ... I wholeheartedly emphasized with Yesenia. What an emotional roller-coaster! facebook.com/562632298/posts/10156878688632299/
Yes, definitely! As an hispanic women I was inspired by my boyfriend who is Caucasian to seek the outdoors. I felt bad being the only Hispanic at a few hiking trails. Now I feel motivated to create new memories and encourage my family to do the same. It is so true, the outdoors culture is not as highly promoted in cultures among people of color. I hope this film inspires our future generations and community.
someone once said to me "look at this black man going fishing" I laughed cause we all seem to have forgotten how free nature is for us all and most importantly how to have fun!.
My priority has changed to buy Vista Outdoor products as my first choice go-to-brand. They deserve the support and products are top quality! MEC and REI are social engineering panders!
This is something you don't often think about, and it's crazy to think that being a minority is what prevented Yesenia from enjoying nature as a child is heartbreaking. Nature is something that should be enjoyed by everyone and not because of color or race, because we are one people of the same race.
Won't put sweetie well put I don't believe in borders at all McDonald's self I don't believe any of us are different from one another and anyway and swear I raise my kids and you finished your father's dream he brought you guys here to have a better life and a better future and you were showing him that thank you I'm pretty sure your parents would say the same thing
Sorry phone acted up I don't leaving borders at all myself I believe we are all the same no matter what you look like no matter what color you are we all deserve to have the same thing
I'm sure that people of color would love to "not put as much emphasis on race" but they are reminded of their race everyday by an America that is infused with racism at every corner and in every institution.
Not saying this from a critical place, but where you're seeing an "emphasis on race," I see an appreciation for her culture and background. I mean that- not just trying to spin things. And I loved watching that bc I can relate to it.
Great video. Goes to show you that her pre-conceived notions that it was only a "white" thing was false, and once she "googled" it, she realized that it was for everyone, she acted. Fantastic video for squashing racists views when she discovered that it wasn't just for one race, but for everyone, if people would just put in the work and research and get out there.
I really wanted to watch this video but when I hear that someone from South America felt not good enough for outdoor sport because 89% of models were white.. that just too much.. look at the market.. from where are the biggest outdoor brands?? All Latinos that I know of love climb and not because some outdoor models are Latinos.. just because they really love it! Take care and thumb down.
Michael Hanson the film was from usa and the main character from country whe people are using Spanish as a first language. Personally when some one is making statements about gender or skin color as a main problem in there lives that make make me sad. Because we are all human beings if u let some one to influence that then it's only your 5hing to overcome. In school I was like that always feeling unsecured about myself because I let other people very bad people to use me and influence me.. but at some point you have to say now and realize that someone else opinion about you is not who you are.. right? All the best Michael!😊
Michael Hanson yes I know😁 but I was more focussed on how she was limiting her live based on adverteisememt. And as I said México is Spanish language country with amazing culture to name only one thing.. día de los muertos. this approach to passing is so fascinating.
Did you even watch the video and take in what the father was saying? Ever wondered why so few minorities share our trails? I invite you to check out charities such as Big City Mountaineers and get a clue before making uneducated off-the-cuff assertions.

Allllll the tears when you talked to your parents about doing it all for them 😭❤️🙌🏾 thank you for this beautiful film REI
Thank you Yesenia for sharing your story! I'm thankful for the sacrifices that my parents made by coming to America in 1969 and 1971

This film was shown during Boise's Backcountry Film Festival.

We need to not put as much emphasis on race. were all humans and skin color is irrelevant
hike bike climb agreed, some people won't let you look past the color of their skin. Sad

Steven Hahn were all humans and race is just a label. Culture is completely different
Easy to say, but this country loves putting labels on folks that are foreign and/or different
sjw wokeness is strong with this video :)

Virtue signaling at its best.

Hey MatM I, curious, where did you hear that someone is from South America? I don't think that was in the film.

Mexico is in North America, MatM I. Yesenia, the main character, is from the USA.
