Yeah, it's a great detail It's better in the Light Novels though, at the end of volume 1 there's an extra chapter from Raphtalia's perspective, entitled "The Flag on the Kid's Meal" that explains how she thought Naofumi would bash her, and gives a reason for her holding the flag so tightly in the anime, being because she expected Naofumi to slap the food away from her before she could eat any It's a great detail in the anime, to try to portray something that's quite difficult to portray as it's all in her head
Think what she (later scenes for reference) has been through before and up until now in this point of the story: Lost her family, got put into a cage and slavery and got gravely ill, became someone's property and (only at the start) forced to fight-quite literally-for survival. She has as much reason be jaded with that world's life as Naofumi. They both help heal each other's hearts and world views, it shows by how he raises her and how she protects/fights for him.
Kid Raphtalia was only present for pretty much one episode, but she left such a huge impression on me that even after she's grown into a woman, I still see her as a precious little daughter who I want to protect. :,) But, _maaan_ do I miss her early innocence! Her smiles and expressions... were just something else back then. ^_^
They grew her up is probably because it's easier to draw adults fighting than children. I know it was a light novel but the writer probably wanted an anime and manga knowing this. It's the same reason super Saiyan 4 Goku is an adult in DB GT.
0:07 a little easter egg. In the novel the shield accidently absorbed raphtailias hair and the shield lets him control her stats but he never wanted to use it
0:09 Ohhhh so that's how he got that raccoon skill. If you don't know what i'm talking about one of the episodes Naofomi looked his shield skill tree thing and you can see a raccoon symbol. So he must have gathered raphtalias hair and got the skill from it.
Raphtalia asking Naofumi not to throw her away legitimately brought tears to my eyes the first time I saw the episode. I really think she's an endearing character
It wasnt bad, but they could have let this part be 2 episodes to explore more on the relationship building of them along with more world building, since it missed a scene of raphtalia playing with the ball and then being bullied and almost getting its ball stolen, or a little more on detail with the scene where naofumi gives her a haircut and later when she pees the bed, which goes to show naofumi view in slaveship, where he is very much taking a business approach to it with improving the slave quality for later use, since he feed raphtalia, gave her medicine, congratulate her when does it well and make it so she understand when she fails, where he states "why would i be angry towards a repenting person that tries to listen and change?", and way later on, in the LN, which probably wont get adapted since its volume 10, goes beyond that with another kind of scenes, also, they missed when he gets the cooking skill, it comes to help out a little that one later on
@Joshua Giard i know, i mentioned also those specific moments since those have multiple purposes, the ball scene shows how deep ingrained the racism between races is to the point that kids bully raphtalia just because she has a toy, the bed scene shows naofumi and his view on people, where raphtalia is scard about being punished but naofumi just tells her off saying that if she is sorry then thats enough, those help to build both world and relationship, and as i said, so far so good, but still some of those scenes are pretty good in stablishing stuff and arent bad either, as it gives time to the audience to feel a better connection with the main protagonists
After the battle Naofumi: _"That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent I've ever set eyes on._ Is there a cave called Caerbannog nearby?" Raphtalia: *Visible Confusion*
Five seconds later, a 6ft tall dog in a suit and hat comes out of the bushes. "Howdy there, folks. You wouldn't have happened to see my little buddy, Max, around here."
She's not really a love interest for Naofumi. He sees her as his daughter. Now I know that changes in the LN but I'm hoping they don't go for that in the anime. This father-daughter dynamic is so much more interesting.
I'd say the other heroes learned the hard way after they got decimated over and over again midway through the series. They each get their 'learning experience' and it was definitely learning the hard way, good lord!!
Wonder how many folks missed/overlooked the detail where the hair he trimmed off, he fed some of it to his shield. (Basically tells you a LOT if not most/everything that can offer a material can be an ingredient for those gem's to sample.)
Had to rewind to make sure I caught that, but it looks like Naofumi feeds a bit of Raphtalia's hair to the Shield after he cuts it for her. Dunno if maybe that's what helped her reach through the fire so many times or if it'll come into play further down the line but it's a detail I hadn't noticed before.

Light novel reader here, He didn't unlock anything as he didn't absorb enough hair. Naofumi did think for a moment about cutting more of her hair off to unlock the shield but then decided not to. He does use it for something in book 7 (or it was 8, can't remember). If you want me to say, just let me know.

I'll keep it brief to not give away too much In book 8 Naofumi goes to Glass's world to chase down some guy, when he goes there he's split up from everyone else except Risha. When he tries to find Raphtalia he decides to create a Shikigami (A sort of familiar that you can get in that world) using Raphtalia's hair. It creates a small cute Raccoon that he decides to name Raph-Chan.
interesting perspective. the distinction of game and reality is the ability to learn from death. the interface is just something eases that interpretation of the world but with permadeath in play, it might as well be reality.
The fact that she wet the bed and Naofumi just dealt with it while comforting her reminds me of why it's difficult for him to see Raphtalia as anything but a daughter. It's also such a mundane thing that it gives a lot of character to their relationship as father and daughter and why i hope they stay that way.
Raphtalia even as a little kid understood that she needed to help Naofumi in his own adventures And now she’s a skilled swordswoman and an integral member of his party I would never imagine Atla ever being like that

I think the game elements are there to contradict the reality of that world. That's why Naofumi came to the realization that this world is very much not a game, despite all those game mechanics; and how the other heroes can't see past these game elements, seeing this world as yet another MMORPG.
I think the "game mechanics" magic helps to enforce the heros role in this world. If Naofumi could have just picked up a sword, then he would have never needed to get Raphtalia in the first place. Then there wouldnt really be a difference between any of the heros.

I agree with you there. Young Raphtalia was so precious. It's a shame they turned their early adventures into a quick montage.
