- Händels befaamde en kleurrijke oratorium 'Solomon' klonk in het AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert. Het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest speelde, samen met solisten en het Groot Omroepkoor, onder leiding van dirigent Peter Dijkstra. De grote muzikale rijkdom van 'Solomon' maakt van het oratorium een in alle opzichten vorstelijk werk.

I have loved Handel's Solomon since I bought a recording by Thomas Beecham way back in the 1960s. Beecham mangled the score and left out chunks but Handel shone through and the performance was very good. I am really enjoying this performance 60 years on . The orchestra , Choir and orchestra are excellent and some of the soloists first class. The great thing is to listen again to a masterpiece and to see the performers. Thank You.
You know by the end of the very first bar that this is going to be a powerful and memorable performance, the sound this orchestra creates is magnificent. Just when you think it couldn’t get better, members of the entire choir pile in with purpose and passion. Congratulations to you all I loved it

Magnificent playing and singing (esp. by Fabio Trümpy and Maarten Engeltjes).
As a general principle, I prefer that the part of a king be sung in a masculine (low) register. It's hard to get a sense of regal authority when the part is rendered by a countertenor or in a trouser role. But Engeltjes performs at such a virtuoso level here that one is almost compelled to overlook the choice of register.
That said, could we get some English subtitles? The chorus gets high marks for understandable English diction, as do Ashley Riches and Mr. Trümpy. But in all candor, offhand I couldn't tell what language Mr. Engeltjes was using. I'd even settle for French subtitles.
You should discuss this with Handel, who wrote the part of Solomon for an Alto
The audio channels of this recording are reversed. Just to give an example: violin are in the right channel, while double basses on the left.

Met alle respect voor Maarten Engeltjes (een geweldige countertenor), maar in 440hz zou ik dit nooit aangenomen hebben. Het ligt steeds nét iets té hoog dat je soms op de toppen van je tenen moet staan om op een comfortabele manier te zingen. En ik zie dat Maarten zich niet altijd even comfortabel voelt, hoe muzikaal hij ook is. De rol van Solomon is een veeleisende zangpartij en komt voor een countertenor beter uit in oude stemming van 415hz (cfr; Andreas Scholl in de opname van Archiv met Paul Mccreesh & Gabrieli Consort). Oorspronkelijk heeft Händel dit geschreven voor een vrouwelijke alt (cfr. Carolyn Watkinson in de opname van Philips met John Eliot Gardiner & Monteverdi choir&orchestra).
