I had the incredible opportunity to play Cornelius with Ms. Martin in London. What a lesson on what a star is. When she was on stage it was impossible not to watch her. And what a pro. Up for every moment of every performance. I also got to watch Ethel Merman in the revival of Annie Get Your Gun, the only star who could match Mary Martin. And.........they were friends!
Just looking at the film of Hello Dolly I realize that the footage was from the London production because I can see myself in the few moments of "It Takes a Woman." Anyhow, Mary was a great big stage star and was always nice to the cast.
That's amazing.
Such a wonderful anecdote. Glad to add it to my files for my music theater history students. I teach youth, they may be young but they really absorb and appreciate this kind of information.
Do you know of her Chinese husband/lover during 1980-1990?
@@onlyonesky9611 Oh, please! Stop it!
I live in the hope that somewhere there is a complete tape of Mary Martin doing this show. The tiny clips you see of her on stage show you what a charismatic she gave. I highly recommend her original cast album of the show. Turn it up loud and love her!
Where is all the unedited footage of this remarkable achievement? The brief glimpses we get of this production are tantalizing!
Thanks so much for posting this. What a treasure Mary Martin was. So interesting to see clips of the original (touring) production of Hello Dolly too. What a legend!
Welcome to Japan. I wish I had been born early enough to see this performance on the stage with my own eyes.
What a talent! I grieve her loss as much as a family member. How darling with the children!
When I was 10 1/2 years old, the whole family saw Mary Martin in Hello Dolly. (This was the summer of 1965.)
HAHAHAH! Mary Martin singing in Japanese. The only other person I've ever heard roll their r's in japanese is Shiina Ringo.
Between the Vietnam footage and this you would surmise someone/somewhere has the complete filming of Mary's DOLLY! Oh, please!?!!!
Someone probably does. It's probably sitting in an archive and and no one realizes it's there.
Was that Carlton Carpenter as "Cornelius Hackl"?
nycruise yes! He was on the international tour with Mary Martin I think after his stint as Cornelius on Broadway.
the whole show is on You tube
Where? What's it called?
I know that we have the great luck to be able to see Carol in most of the show on UA-cam, but I am not aware of anyone who has the original filmed footage of the Mary Martin version. The camera angels look as though they might have been shooting with three cameras. What an incredible gift to the world it would be to have the complete MARY MARTIN HELLO DOLLY! (And when are they going to release a good crisp copy of MARY'S PETER PAN on DVD?)
+Star Sky Yes. They have just (finally) released a remastered version of Mary Matiin's PETER PAN. And it's available on Blu-ray too.
Star Sky Where's the Carol footage? Can only find the scene in the restaurant
Star Sky Also, how bout Phyllis Diller or Eve Arden? Anything? Even audio?
Shawn Mulligan yes! I have this vague memory as a young child of Phyllis Diller singing before the parade passeson a variety show. I’ve been looking for that and can’t find it. And of course footage from the actual show would just be amazing!
