    Mike there are also waterproofing bags you can purchase for the ilbe that will help with weather conditions. Thought it might be helpful. God bless and keep up the great work

      Thanks for the suggestion! The supplier we got our ILBE bag from didn't have any in stock when we ordered and then did the video. Hoping to get one soon! Thanks for the support and for watching! Have a great day!

    Great pack. I've bought one and I just couldn't be more satisfied. I even made a review of mine in Portuguese so people could have it as a choice if they are looking for a BOB or just a large pack for long trips. Thanks for the review.

      Did you choose the "good" condition back pack on their website? It still turned out really well?

    • @SchoolOfSelfReliance
      @SchoolOfSelfReliance  9 років тому

      Demon Hunter When I bought my pack, they had New, Like New Excellent, Good, and Fair condition packs. I purchased the New one. I know their Like New is fabulous. The "Good" I have not seen. However, I know the company you are dealing with, Black Star, is a reputable company and their product descriptions are accurate, but I do not have any experience with the "Good" condition packs. I always purchase New or Like New.

    How does the Alice Pack compare to this? I know it was used in Vietnam with good success.

    • @SchoolOfSelfReliance
      @SchoolOfSelfReliance  9 років тому +3

      ALICE packs (and I still have one that is now collecting dust in a closet), were alright back in their day, but they just cannot live up to the ILBE packs. I was just talking to my wife today about how much more comfortable the ILBE is, how it fits your body better, helps distribute the weight better, its padded and comfortable, it is quiet (compared to the ALICE that could rattle a bit), it is more versatile as it has the ability to add so many different pouches, bags, packs, gear onto the ILBE with MOLLE attachements, where you were limited with what/where gear could go on the old ALICE. Best bag I have ever purchased, I mean it, is the ILBE. Save your money and get one. ALICE has seen her days and they are over. ILBE rules the day now.

    what do you think about hammocks vs tents and do they make a good two person hammock that you would recommend?

    • @SchoolOfSelfReliance
      @SchoolOfSelfReliance  9 років тому

      I have no experience with 2-person hammocks. However, single-person hammocks are light weight and easy to use. I especially like the standard military jungle hammock that has mosquito netting on all 4 sides and a solid roof. This has been a choice of mine for years for summertime. However, hammocks are a terrible choice for cold weather or even for just cool weather. Hammocks are definitely lighter than tents, however there are some fabulous single-person bivy style tents like the ProForce Ionosphere and Stratosphere. Rothco has a version that is cheaper and still does a good job. Larger 3 & 4 man tents are heavy, bulky, and hard to pack.

    its not Improved load bearing equipment. it's Individual load bearing equipment (at least according to the marine corps training videos here on youtube). Great pack either way though, got one myself through Craigslist brand new never used for $50 and i couldn't be happier. only thing i would change about it if i could, would be to add a rugged bottom panel to help protect the pack more. maybe something like they used on Swiss Gear backpacks.

    • @SchoolOfSelfReliance
      @SchoolOfSelfReliance  10 років тому

      The Marine Corps vids are wrong. Its Improved Load Bearing Equipment because it was a Improvement over the old ALICE gear. Improved is the correct acronym, but many use slang and called it Individual.
      www.acronymfinder.com/Improved-Load-Bearing-Equipment-(US-Marine-Corps)-(ILBE).html
      They are great bags though, can pack a ton of gear in them. I agree, they could use a bottom panel either inside the pack or a tougher material on the bottom so when you sling your pack down, it doesn't get worn on the bottom, leading to rips and tears. Maybe future generations will have this feature.

    • @Smokey420Greenleaf
      @Smokey420Greenleaf 10 років тому

      ok so i guess the official marine corps training videos, where the instructor said individual at least 5 times are wrong, that makes sense lol. either way good channel.

    Would a sleeping bag be mounted on top of the lid or from the bottom?

    • @SchoolOfSelfReliance
      @SchoolOfSelfReliance  9 років тому

      Depending on the amount and type of gear you are carrying, you could do either, or even put it inside your pack if you only carrying minimal gear. I prefer putting mine on the bottom so it doesn't block my peripheral vision (like it does when carried on top of the back).

      Awesome! Glad to hear the family is getting into prepping! The more people prepared (even if only a little) is better than people who will be out of luck in an emergency. Thanks for watching and sharing with your family!
