I learned that bit about the Grenada tourist map when I was a geography grad student in the 1980s. Someone from the CIA came to talk to us (it was the only government agency hiring cartographers at the time) and told us the story. The CIA was not at all happy about having to provide the military with a tourist map, and advised them not to rely on it. But they used it anyway.

The real population of a city is it’s metropolitan area (arguably). A city defined in by its governmental provision is just the area controlled by a single city authority. So, Miami technically would only have about 400,000 people but it’s metropolitan area is about 7 million which is more accurate. Jakarta city has 10 million people but it’s metropolitan area is 32 million placed second in the world behind Tokyo.
Especially since governance arrangements vary so wildly from country to country. Comparisons based on "city-proper" definition are basically meaningless between nations. Metro area definitely makes a lot more sense (though is inevitably imprecise).
@@MrMuel1205 i think urban boundaries are the best way to determine population. in Jakarta for example, the urban population stretched even beyond the vast Metro area in out-of metro cities like Karawang and Cikande
Java is not actually _that_ small. It can stretch from San Francisco to the eastern border of Utah.

The 293rd Rifle Division began service as a Red Army rifle division shortly after the German invasion. For whatever reason population data tends to only list Jakarta City Proper's population of 11 million people which is far smaller than Tokyo's seemingly 37 million people, i think it's because of the way Indonesian government statistics work.
A much more ignored data is the Metro data (Population of Greater Jakarta or Jabodetabek-Punjur in Indonesian) which shows that the metro area of Jakarta has *33-35 million* people, more populated than the entirety of Malaysia and the second most populated only after the afformentioned Tokyo, now comparable since Tokyo's 37 million people data is its *Metro* population

I’ve been to Whittier in the Summer and that’s when there’s more people there. It was originally a big navy port, and a massive barracks was built there, but it was destroyed a year after it opened by a massive earthquake. The military gave up on Whittier and the only access to it is through one of the longest shared tunnels in the world. Sometimes a train comes through and you have to wait for it to pass to be able to enter the town. Only a few people are crazy enough to live there year round, and those that do have their entire lives in approximately one city block.
