  • Make your own re-usable fabric shopping and grocery bags. AND it folds up so you can always have a bag ready to go in your purse or backpack.
    This bag is not lined to keep it light in weight. You will learn how to make flat felled seams so the bag doesn't have bulky seams and also adds strength to the bag with the two rows of sewn edges.
    These bags make great sewing gifts for all occasions!

    I'm a new sewer. My first project was a pot holder. That was yesterday. Today I knocked this out. I plan to make many more for myself and for gifts. Thank you. Just a fabulous, on point, instructional video!! Thank you!!

    I had a lot of fun making these bags for teachers' year end gifts. The finish inside the bag is absolutely lovely. It looks much harder to make than it really was (I consider myself an advanced beginner/intermediate sewist) I foresee more of these in my future!

I’ve never made a flat felled seam before so I’m even learning something new. You are a great teacher. The video was easily one of the best sewing tutorials on UA-cam. I noticed right away that Patti is an excellent teacher who is giving us all the information we need, and _nothing we don't need._
      I won't name names, but there are some popular craft channels I no longer watch because of their loooong intros that they probably think makes them look look like professional Hollywood cinematographers. (hint: it doesn't)
      Okay, I'll mention one channel because it has to be a joke, spoof, scam... something because they can't possibly be serious. You know I'm talking about 5 Minute Crafts. I'm not talking about spoof channels like that nonsense.
      The creators I am referring to use the same annoying, long intro on every video, but when their subscribers suggest the intro is too long and unnecessary (and has the most annoying music ever) the channel owner tells them to just skip it or don't watch the first part.
      The one I'm thinking of is a wonderful, creative host who has a darling personality and I enjoy every minute of the video _when he's talking,_ but I have to skip the first minutes of his video because of that horrible intro! The music is jarring. It sounds like someone pushing the button of the buzzer used when a game show contestant gives a wrong answer, over and over. I'm perplexed that he doesn't understand that we are trying to help by suggesting he lose that horrific intro.
      I'm happily subscribing to Crafty Patti now _because_ of her straight forward instructions. I love that she doesn't assume that everyone watching is an experienced sewist, so she gives those vital tips that many of us learned the hard way.
      #1 rule with cotton fabric, PREWASH!!! It's so important to the success of your project. Those of us who have sewn all our lives consider that a given, so I shouldn't be surprised when most content creators don't bother to mention it. However, it's too important not to mention.
      Thank you Patti! Even though I've been sewing for over 50 years, I have learned from you!

    Excellent instructions; very easy to follow you. Thanks so much for your patient instructions. This is a perfect gift for my daughter in CA. Since the law recently changed, plastic grocery bags are now outlawed and they are charged 10 cents each for grocery bags at any store in CA.

    • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
      @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts  6 років тому

      Back in the 70's, I lived in Australia for a couple of years and we always took our mesh bags to the grocery store. I don't know why it took North America so long to get with the program so to say. Plastic grocery bags have just been banned recently where I live as well.
      I have been using purchased nylon shopping bags for awhile now and always had one or two with me when I went shopping. But I love cotton so decided to make my own and share it with everyone. Where I live they will pay you 3 to 5 cents for bringing your own bags. A little incentive to bring your own and not pollute with plastic.
      I am very pleased with the wonderful response on this tote bag tutorial. Thanks again for your great comment!

    Patti, great tutorial. I love the flat enclosed seams. These are used on so many of the higher priced items. They make the bag stronger and hold it's shape much better. The trick of the fold up on the bottom to make the gusset on the sides is really nice. You are a great instructor and know how to cover each part carefully and quickly ... no unnecessary chatter drawing things out, yet, still pleasant to listen to, watch and learn. Thanking you for your time and talent, but most of all sharing it with us freely. God bless you and yours.

    Wohoo I did it - I made these for my daughter in law for xmas as she has petite hands. I did accidently sew the bottam so had to handsew the closure but they still look great and it wasn't that stressful - thanks very much!!!

    Great video! I made the bag using a print with vegetables on it. Instead of the flat felled seams I decided to use french seams. For me that worked out better. I don't have the patience for flat felled seams. Thanks for the tutorial!

    Thank You Crafty Patti, I Loved the first bag and this new one is great. I made a single strap with the same fabric. Then pulled the strp through the clip tab on the bag. This also keeps the bag compact. I would love to send you photos of the bag, I call it (bananas about you) when I gift it this will be in the note.

      I am very confident with using the rotary cutter. I have been using one for as long as I can remember. I have never even nicked myself. But sorry, if it made you nervous. Sometimes it is difficult to film and still have a good view for the camera so can sometimes look awkward.

    I wonder if french seams, would work, to swap out the flat felled seams, for the bottom of the bag? Such a relief to find an instructional video, with clear communication, fingers not in the way, big black texta markings that are easily seen on camera. I would prefer to see a black thread stitching, against the pale fabric, (in an instructional video), in order to see exactly where the stitching goes. I found it hard to see, the detail needed, for how you made the flat felled seam, (the last folding bit, similar to putting bias binding around a raw edge). Your calm, measured voice, was so nice to listen to. I’ve never had the opportunity to learn with a relative, so this is the closest I’ve ever come to that, thank you so much. Many tutorials miss out crucial steps, you take the time to explain things well. The last video I watched to make similar, used a pale solid colour fabric. It was much easier for me to understand, when there was an obvious right side of fabric, and wrong side of fabric, in your video.

    • @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
      @CraftyPattiArtsCrafts  4 роки тому

      Thanks for taking the time to write your comment. Much appreciated. Yes, you could certainly swap out a french seam for the bottom if desired. I put a lot of thought into every video I publish. Gathering supplies, how to present it, trying to remember to zoom in my camera or change angles of the camera. What to say, or extra notes to add. I’m very detailed oriented and that’s why my videos are always on the long side. I want viewers to be able to make it themselves. It’s hard to get everything in the video otherwise it would be a 3 hr video. So thanks again for your supportive words.
