Rest In Peace James McCaffrey. The only man who could ever bring a character like Max Payne to life. You will be cemented in Gaming History as One of the Greatest.
Yeah, goddamn it. He should have played Max in a movie. He would have killed it.
May he be at peace.
Not just gaming history but life itself. The amount of people here resonating with the character is disturbing, but real in the same time. Thank you for honouring the legend. I hope all the people watching this, and struggling will find the way through it, because its really f*cking hard. I fell honoured to be part of this community. And you should feel the same because you are not alone. We are united. We share the burden that not many will accept or understand.
Max quitted smoking after his daughter was born.
Seeing him smoking again really shows how it affected him.
Dude, I completely forgot about that 😭
@@SirenChatssame
HOLY CRAP YOU ARE RIGHT!!! 😢🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭😭
This is the first time we ever see him mourn the lose of he’s family and it’s so damn powerful
Holy fuck..
man, james mccaffrey deserves a damn oscar for his role as Max.
Andy Freeman agree 500% I love his voice and Max Payne as a character
Great voiceactor and awesome voice
Yeah the Voice
Fucking seriously. He has the perfect tone, voice, and demeanor for Max Payne. You can't replace him.
Andy Freeman glad it’s him and not some other guy, voice acting for the same character for three Max Payne generations.
One of the saddest character in video games... poor guy.
That's why I love him.
He s sad because his family is dead, killed. If they should be live he becomes a kind guy.
Cause his wife and his kid died poor dude
really truth why these types of people are sad every time men
I loved max Payne 3 but it was hard too see how beat up max was in this game and the all the crap he has to go through again

*“Maybe I had lost my self-respect. But it’s back. I’m excited, really.”*
The sarcasm
Very funny...........Ha Ha......Yes, that is a fake laugh, you Jerk.
Never thought it was sarcastic lol
Every time I play this game I feel like I'm watching a movie, not even to mention the oneliners this guy puts out there. Great experience overall
Same, but the gameplay is great too. Just a great game overall.
Everything he says is so poetic and really sets the scene for his own inner turmoil.
As someone who has always struggled with a serious drinking problem, This intro really hits home.... The feeling of "Yep... time to change. I'm done with drinking. gonna sort my shit out".
Then seeing Max sitting there.... staring at the photograph. I can see the battle playing out in his head wanting to go out and buy a bottle of scotch. It's so hard to compete with that struggle.
Hope you win your battle
Its the pain, its the want to avoid the pain, to reduce it or feel less. And you are left with two choices... you either embrace it or let it eat you alive and every moment. spendt wallowing shapes the marks on your grave. I lost most of the people i loved in my life, but it doesnt get better or easier because you have to change and that hurts even more. There is always a battle and you dont win all of them... and that's okay
@@hl-yz7gr Thank you! Since I posted that comment two years ago I have actually been through rehab and am now 7 months sober. So I guess I might have won the battle, But there is the saying "once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic" .There's always the risk of relapse. I feel better than ever though and I never even think about drinking anymore :)
Brother I get you I’m dealing with the same struggle and we can over come it, I hope you’re doing well mate
Yeah. It's a hard battle. I lost my mum almost 2 weeks ago. And I knew she hated me drinking... but looking at her pictures... I wanna get so drunk I wanna see her.
I know Im wrong and I hope you're better by now
RIP James, having a Whiskey & a smoke for you Sir.
Cheers brother. But without the smoking and I'm having red wine
I can't express how much of an impact that James McCaffrey and Max Payne has had on my life. I was genuinely heartbroken when I heard that James had passed away. I will always be a lover and supporter of Max Payne and I want to thank James and Sam Lake and everyone else that made Max Payne what it was. RIP James. You will live on forever through Max and every other role you've immortalized.
His sadness and the end result of his sadness, the oblivion of drugs and booze is something many can understand and sympathize with. Many would follow in his shoes by just trying to destroy their sense of self behind the intoxication and medication. The music is one of my favorites.
The music is so beautifully crafted in the opening sequence. Man, if only films had this much production quality. Rockstar will forever be the greatest.
@@banginbadger75 health- tears
I understand perfectly the depression and loneliness each time his mind speaks louder.
@@gcsec8811 tears plays at the airport level, this track is composed by health and is a “remixed” version of Max Payne 2 theme
it's all the same... we're in pain and sometimes it gets to you and you can't really take it, with intoxicating self hatred, huh.. yeah.
One of the few games that really are sad and dark. There should be just more of these.
10/10
And less GTA V kinda style game where you just turn your brain off and start killing everyone and everything
Armi Kuusela Try mafia 2 or manhunt both are very dark games
@Will Santos i said gta v not gta iv
@@1mmarker Manhunt in my opinion is a masterpiece, the gameplay is pretty simplistic, but the dark atmosphere, soundtrack, brutal executions make this game a must play.
This is not a game, this is a great movie with a playable cutscene
wrong
Rest In Peace, James McCaffrey.
this intro is what it feels like to start a new job after a long degen period of unemployment
This job is great. Really comfortable. I'm just gonna get settled in
I just can’t stop coming back to rewatch these.
Good taste. Keep that in mind
Same
Timeless stuff... first played it myself almost 10 years ago. Really distinguished tone, gameplay, and overall feel in this title.
@@hadramawut29 lol
I watch this everyday with a bottle of vodka and a few cigarettes
I really do not know why people didn’t like the third sequel. It’s got probably the most accurate future of Max, with all the flashbacks into the old New Jersey, while, on the other hand, saturated with new software and cinematics, this game really was a bullseye. I loved it and played multiple times.
Dunno about that, all the fans I know loved it. The most criminally underrated game ever, that’s for sure.
The plot was admittedly a little weak but it still worked. And everything else was perfect.
It’s like they wanted another game in New York. In my opinion it wouldn’t been tiring. I didn’t think max Payne 2 was necessary, another tragedy in New York would’ve been too much of the same
@@Cj-xt6tv because Max's story ended in Max Payne 2, he gets over the grief over the death of his family and is reborn, which is why the credit song is called "Late Goodbye" it's about him finally saying goodbye and letting go, although late, he still says goodbye, I don't have any problem with 3 other than the fact they completely ignored his character development in 2, it's over, 2 was all about the letting go and being reborn
@@detectivepayne3773 I guess but cmon. 3’s gameplay has gotta make up for them ignoring his character development from the second and prolonging it one more game. I mean he seems to be already over his grief in the 3rd, at least by the end
22 years old, struggling to hold onto whatever money i have left, trying to move away from my parents who take my money and try to control me to this day, and having spent a year in an overcrowed house due to a house fire, i found this game around that time, if it werent for max payne, my friends, and my art, i wouldve met my maker far sooner, wether through alcohol or other means. Im still trying to make change happen, hopefully soon
Theres always a way out brother just keep grafting. Wont take as long as you think. 5 years time you will look back and remember it as a bad dream.
I am in tears, James thank you for giving us the best voice in gaming industry. RIP LEGEND, Max Payne legacy will continue in your honor
I think this harder the older we get. RIP James.
"Let it go.....seriously."
if I had a fucking dollar for every time I told myself that.....It was horseshit and I knew it.
I keep coming back to this video every day for years now... I just cant let go
Nothing since this game has come quite as close as this one.

@@humansmoke2891 Nah Man...
I watch this video everyday. Came here after finding out that James McCaffery died yesterday. R.I.P to the man who made the character touch my soul in times of sadness and sorrow
the most brilliant thing about the game is that there were times when those lights and visual effects of "glitchness" were irritating but when i understood it represented Payne's condition and crisis i kinda loved it
yes this game was way ahead of its time see that today in 2022 we have nothing like it that is the games are worse, they are rubbish;
max payne is a game changer is an epic masterpiece.
I love this scene because he was already depressed and then moved to São Paulo. Now, as a Paulistano since I was born, my brother in Christ, you just made a very poor choice.
Rest in Peace, dear James McCaffrey. And thank you for everything.
Max Payne: Quits smoking. "See? It's my last smoke. It's bad for the baby."
Max Payne 2: Painkiller addiction (ironically caused by the player)
This game: Alcoholic, heavy smoker and painkiller addict
This is the most heartbreaking videogame opening in recent memory for me, having lost my dad to alcoholism and smoking. I know Max is around his mid 40's here, but he looks like he's 60, due to all the trauma and self-harm. Read the comic After the Fall and it adds a totally new layer to one of my favorite videogame protagonists.
Rest in peace James McCaffrey. Your work left an impact on me.
Max Payne 1: broken man willing for revenge
Max Payne 2: lost man trying to find meaning to his life
Max Payne 3: old and fucked up dude tired of life
I started playing Max Payne in Dec. 2001 on the Xbox OG. I dealt with anger and pain through substance abuse back then and still do so in 2024. It's better now "I mean once in a while, but not all the time".
Max Payne is one of my top five favorite franchises of all time and this is my favorite intro to any game, ever. NES to Xbox Series X.
Rip James McCaffery. Thank you.
One of the more realistic depictions of addiction in video games.
His wretching on an empty stomach in the middle of the game is just heartbreaking. Watching a man who let himself go because he lost everything to live for
Have to say, this was painful to watch as someone who’s had rock-bottom points in life. This is why I don’t want there to be a Max Payne 4, I just want the guy to rest and live the rest of his life in peace
Would you say no to a remake tho?
Or maybe a game about what happened between MP2 and MP3
@@Infinitywolf23Nope, I’d be down for that. MP 1 and 2 with 3’s graphics and mechanics
@@eee.000That’d be cool too
@@ashhabimran239 hey man , there's a comics of max payne 3 explained what happened between mp2 and mp3
RIP James Mccaffrey :(
Max Payne: Revenge
Max Payne 2: The Fall
Max Payne 3: The new life
Now that you mentioned it, it feels like at the end of Max Payne 2, he is "falling" in a sense that he is delusional about accepting his family's death and Max Payne 3 is how he became after all these years.
At 1:02, Max says,
"Let it go, seriously."
i mean, seriously?
Love this part
"Yes, absolutely", cue score. Brilliant directing, some of the best ever in video games and even beyond.
3:07 - 3:34 My favourite part.. Really heart touching
Yes but I would say 2:59 - 3:35
It is absolutely criminal Rockstar/Take 2 haven't remastered this game yet, I would buy it in a heartbeat
What are you talking about? This game looks and works excellent unlike first two games.
@@stanleycrowley9333 it's really weird to me. This game looks old but still ages well at the same time. I think this looks a bit better than GTA V in terms of character models.
@@CLA82529 It was way better in storytelling and combat system. Even Rockstar quoted the cover system of max payne which was and still one of the best alongside Mafia 2.

@@batalorian7997 But it ain't canon 😭
You could headcanon it but the reality is that she dies.. it's even confirmed in the comic precursor to Max Payne 3's events
@@KH0LRA 1) bullshit comic
2) Max Payne 3 is way too dissociated from Max Payne 2 and it seems the devs didn’t understand the second installment. MP3 works great as a sequel to MP1, but sucks as a sequel to MP2.
The older I get, the more I understand him.
Man, your comment pierced my heart.
Honestly. Right at this moment, an empty bottle of Barrister on my left and a full ashtray on my right, I can really emphasize with this Max. Unhappy, unsatisfied, drinking alone (hey, alcoholism), and barely functional? Yep. Hello hellhole.
Sometimes fighting with life in middle class socity i feel like i am also max payne

man i feel like story telling through video games will become a lost art form, seeing how popular multiplayer games are becoming and game developers scrapping single player all together to focus more on multiplayer. this game will be one of my top favorite game and feel like we wont see games like this anymore.
I don't know about angles but it's fear that gives man wings. _Max Payne
One of the greatest games, saw this when I was 13 in a game informer then bought it, it’s like a book the descriptive tone Max talks in pulled me in the mechanics Maxs battle with alcoholism wow and score was so great would love to get this ported to next gen
This game series is have had a profound and deep impact on me. RIP Jim.
This was the first game which made me cry while reading the story and playing the game
Wish this guy got promoted to higher position. I mean he solved the Valkyrie and Inner Circle cases. Compensated by his former boss wasn’t good enough, the government doesn’t deserved Payne.
as a kid I used to find Max to be so badass, still do, but I also used to wish so hard I was just like him, now I got there and I kinda regret wishing that
When rockstar was actually good
3:25 hits me hard! 😭
Getting excited about the remake. It's my childhood memories. I am watching all the three parts again and again for gearing up to remake.
Max my dearest of all friends - Vlad.
I love MP1, 2 and 3 🔥👌. Especially the voice , music , guns and attitude of Sam Lake, Timothy Gibbs and James McCaffrey. I want to go back to 2004 and re- live my childhood again. Now I'm 29 years old. Still hyped to play the game. Remedy and Rockstar energy drink i need to slow down time and press the trigger.

Jessie what the fuck are you talking about
I’m not gonna lie. When I saw him leaving flowers on his family’s grave, I got misty eyed for him.
I cannot imagine what losing a baby feel like
I was going through some stuff and drinking a lot when this game came out . The " let it go. Seriously" hit me and I cut that shit out thank max
one of the best game intros. there are some others like ff14 flames of truth, witcher 2 opening and assassins creed brotherhood but I mean this compares to them.
Masterful storytelling, and well written American humour. He really acted well as a character that went to hell emotionally.
I only wish the poor bloke had some salvation even though he topped cop class, but he was born into a terrible place.
Its so damn hard to change....
God damn this OST is so perfect
ONE OF THE HARDEST VIDEO GAMES OF ALL TIME
My life was like that except I never killed my self.
Neither did Max lol
Its called adulthood
What makes you think Max Payne killed himself?
You killed people?
Sorry for this..
So awesome that Mr Hermano - Como Um Sol got on the soundtrack and in the cutscene. :)
Thank you!
He’s wearing something similar to Micheals grey suit
Michael has even slow motion shooting like in Max Payne and he looks a little bit like him ;D I talked even with my brother about that 1 months ago
I’m almost certain Michael is based off Max Payne. You can even buy his bad Hawaiian shirt to wear in GTA V.
this one is for the introverts
I'm so sad for this final game
Even though I quit smoking years ago, from 3:05 , especially 3:24, makes me want to smoke one.
One of the greatest games ever made
Oh my god, he is literally me.
Seriously how haven’t rockstar remastered this game
They are too Busy milking gta 5 and gta online greedy for shark cards shame
As it started I knew I was in for a completely different game. But I also knew I was in for one hell of a show

watching this intro comforts me a lot, seeing someone else go through shit and having some relation in their sadness and struggles.
I'm not forget these games omg
I miss you max payne. Pls rockstar continue the series.
Please don't. Max has earned his rest. He walked into the sunset and found some peace.
Watching this because my Max Payne 3 game is broken. Every time it gets to the flashback scene it crashes
God I miss the multiplayer of this game so much
Surely you can still find the odd match on there. I haven’t even tried to be honest
This game alone has all stupid micro-transaction games under its heel. Today's infants would never understand a mind-blowing and heart-breaking story like this.
Millennials are acting like boomers these days I miss the times when they were the infants
@@tareklegrand7747 Yeah, me too, my brother.

The music reminds me about Max Payne 2
One of the best games I've ever played
This was a pretty hard-hitting start for the game as I first played it on my PS3, especially coming fresh off of playing MP1 and 2. Still gets me every time and how I feel losing my own loved ones as I grew up.
I recently moved into an apartment and played max pain for the first time for in a while and the part where he looks around in his apartment makes me laugh just at the timing
I picked up this game in the midst of a post-divorce alcoholic bout of depression. 12/10 must play
This place is great...really comfortable being uncomfortable
Just replayed this classic, like damn this is how you open with a character with two amazing titles
