His sadness and the end result of his sadness, the oblivion of drugs and booze is something many can understand and sympathize with. Many would follow in his shoes by just trying to destroy their sense of self behind the intoxication and medication. The music is one of my favorites.
The music is so beautifully crafted in the opening sequence. Man, if only films had this much production quality. Rockstar will forever be the greatest.
The original Max Payne gives me the strangest nostalgia ever. I played it when I was really young. That completely black level, with the baby crying non-stop and the blood trail probably scarred me for life.

Hands down the best rockstar game, if not the best video game overall. The action sequences in this game are so fun and intense and the acting is literally better than a lot of movies. I don’t know why this game didn’t win any awards to be honest. I wish video games were still like this. The GTA series and Red Dead Redemption sequel can’t even compare to this masterpiece.
I guess people only appreciate popular games and not games that are absolute masterpieces. Look at Mafia: Definitive Edition, it’s a masterpiece but it didn’t win any awards
For me it's gotta be GTA IV if its the best Rockstar game.. but this? man it's gotta be special. It was a creation that Sam Lake and Remedy first created but Rockstar Vancouver and Dan Houser flourished in Rockstar's own style! The setting and vibe was all different, but it all felt so familiar.. We saw the fall of Max in part 2, but in here, we saw the end of his character where he breaks the chain and finally gets a rewarding ending :)) he looked so happy under the sunset.. This game and the whole series will hold a special place in my heart
the most brilliant thing about the game is that there were times when those lights and visual effects of "glitchness" were irritating but when i understood it represented Payne's condition and crisis i kinda loved it
yes this game was way ahead of its time see that today in 2022 we have nothing like it that is the games are worse, they are rubbish; max payne is a game changer is an epic masterpiece.
A true masterpiece, I remember playing this game back in 2012, in my eyes, one of Rockstar's finest creations, alongside the remainder of the franchise, and a select few GTA games, (not to mention Red Dead 1 and 2.)
Really hope so too, would buy them in a heartbeat. I know Remedy announced a remake of the first two games, but it will feel....empty without James. Yes, I am aware that they could use ai for his voice, but still
I started playing Max Payne in Dec. 2001 on the Xbox OG. I dealt with anger and pain through substance abuse back then and still do so in 2024. It's better now "I mean once in a while, but not all the time". Max Payne is one of my top five favorite franchises of all time and this is my favorite intro to any game, ever. NES to Xbox Series X. Rip James McCaffery. Thank you.
The moment he put those roses on his son and wife's grave just broken me into tears. One of the best video games characters I had ever seen. I love this game because it's story match to my life story. ;(
I love this scene because he was already depressed and then moved to São Paulo. Now, as a Paulistano since I was born, my brother in Christ, you just made a very poor choice.
Its sooo sad, demoralizing, and depressing to watch a great hero like Max Payne killing so many bad guys, watch his family and daughter be killed, and cant even get a good romance with Mona Sax because of Vlad! No matter how strong a man is.....he will eventually break down hard especially if there is no woman or hope left. The true horrible cost of being a hero.....smdh
Not just a daughter but a new born baby at that!!! Can you imagine how that fuck up a mans head seeing his new born baby killed when he comes home let alone his wife also?
Now that you mentioned it, it feels like at the end of Max Payne 2, he is "falling" in a sense that he is delusional about accepting his family's death and Max Payne 3 is how he became after all these years.
Max Payne is the most unfortunate man ever. All his life, fate played cruel jokes upon him. He lost everyone he wanted to keep for himself. He lost everyone he thought belonged to him. His wife, his child, Mona Sax etc. - all of them left him. I would not wish the misfortunes of Max upon my greatest enemies.
One of the more realistic depictions of addiction in video games. His wretching on an empty stomach in the middle of the game is just heartbreaking. Watching a man who let himself go because he lost everything to live for
this cutscene twists my heart into knots every time I see it. it’s such a perfect reminder of why I believe this to be one of the most flagrantly misunderstood and criminally underrated/underappreciated games i’ve ever played. the story was captivating all the way through (despite several replays) and the writing for max was fantastic despite lacking sam lake’s slick dialogue. the voice acting was first rate and phenomenal, the way you can feel max gradually change, becoming more angry, more aggressive as the game goes on felt so visceral and it was brought to life brilliantly by mccaffrey. the production value and presentation were both top notch, down to the impeccably directed cutscenes, the linear but no less spectacular set pieces, the visual style and the trippy glitch effects. the soundtrack was frankly awesome and it goes down as one of my favorites for any game (I cannot describe how invigorating it was to play through the entire trilogy and get to the exhilarating and rightfully iconic shootout in the airport) and health deserves every ounce of praise that they got. the gunplay struck a perfect balance between feeling weighty and realistic while still being remarkably smooth and fun. everything about this game is perfect to me and as someone who loves the other 2 games (max payne 1 in particular is firmly in my top 5 favorite games of all time) I believe that rockstar crafted as respectful a send off to the series as possible, one that felt unique and distinctive while also generally being one of the most utterly gripping, effortlessly replayable gaming experiences ever. this game means so much to me in so many ways and i’ll always love it/defend it.
Max Payne: Quits smoking. "See? It's my last smoke. It's bad for the baby." Max Payne 2: Painkiller addiction (ironically caused by the player) This game: Alcoholic, heavy smoker and painkiller addict This is the most heartbreaking videogame opening in recent memory for me, having lost my dad to alcoholism and smoking. I know Max is around his mid 40's here, but he looks like he's 60, due to all the trauma and self-harm. Read the comic After the Fall and it adds a totally new layer to one of my favorite videogame protagonists.
Have to say, this was painful to watch as someone who’s had rock-bottom points in life. This is why I don’t want there to be a Max Payne 4, I just want the guy to rest and live the rest of his life in peace
They really hit the dot with this game Max Payne 3 really captures what depression, pain ,and letting go feels like they really hit the nail on this. This is probably the most accurate depiction of what could’ve been in the future him moving on or trying to move on at least trying to get away from it all at the same time battling addiction and Substance Abuse, which is another theme played on in the game which a lot of video games do not do or too scared to do it. and I just don’t know why people dislike the game when it first came out but overtime it got appreciated for what it is. I guess people wanted the old-school noir theme but everything about this the details like the video glitches in video like a camcorder showing Maxes disorientation from the pills that he abuses, and the pure fish out of Water feeling.
those demons will follow him for eternity. a wife and a baby girl...murdered. his lover...murdered. all of the pain in his life has always started with the death of a woman. a sordid tale...dirty business.
@@batalorian7997 But it ain't canon 😭 You could headcanon it but the reality is that she dies.. it's even confirmed in the comic precursor to Max Payne 3's events

Rest in Peace, James McCaffrey. Your voice left a lasting impression on me and million others. Hope you're in a better place, Max. Reunited with Michelle and Rose.
Rest In Peace Sir James McCaffrey you will always be remembered 🤍🕊️
This game has aged like fine wine.
Graphics still look great.
Definitely need a max payne 4.
Thia game personally ends the story perfectly, he's relaxing in his new life with no worries and finally moved on from his past
Well we’re getting a remake of the first two! But yeah, there really shouldn’t be another sequel, Max’s story ended perfectly in 3 IMO
Prequels would definitely be nice but no more sequels to make Max's life worse than it already is
@@JinroTheCorpse Even so if they ended Max payne 3 with him at peace for now they would need to make sure the next possible game makes sense or else it would ruin a great franchise
@@JinroTheCorpse their making a remake of the first, so their is no need for a sequel
"Let it go.....seriously."
if I had a fucking dollar for every time I told myself that.....It was horseshit and I knew it.
Rip to the legend.
3:24 that was the saddest scene ever in this series imo
The ending is probably the saddest but happiest part of the entire series.
the saddest is the hair scene imo
@@epicmatrix2208 Yeah, he had amazing hair.
nice pfp
@@Aivottaja Thank god the classic outfit mod exist that keeps his hair and gives him the hawaiian shirt underneat the jacket like the cougar shirt but sadly it dosen't work in cutscenes
Most underrated game of all time
Hands down the best rockstar game, if not the best video game overall. The action sequences in this game are so fun and intense and the acting is literally better than a lot of movies. I don’t know why this game didn’t win any awards to be honest. I wish video games were still like this. The GTA series and Red Dead Redemption sequel can’t even compare to this masterpiece.
Frfr all time favorite game 💯
the real game
And is surprisingly long for a mission based linear style game, really was an awesome ride beginning to end
RIP
the most brilliant thing about the game is that there were times when those lights and visual effects of "glitchness" were irritating but when i understood it represented Payne's condition and crisis i kinda loved it
yes this game was way ahead of its time see that today in 2022 we have nothing like it that is the games are worse, they are rubbish;
max payne is a game changer is an epic masterpiece.
A true masterpiece, I remember playing this game back in 2012, in my eyes, one of Rockstar's finest creations, alongside the remainder of the franchise, and a select few GTA games, (not to mention Red Dead 1 and 2.)
I really hope Remedy and Rockstar make an remastered version of the whole series in the honor of late James McCaffery..
Really hope so too, would buy them in a heartbeat. I know Remedy announced a remake of the first two games, but it will feel....empty without James.
Yes, I am aware that they could use ai for his voice, but still
@@dirtyslimyhairy5822they can just use his voice for the first 2 games they would just have to improve the audio
i love the moment when the door opens and the music starts
I started playing Max Payne in Dec. 2001 on the Xbox OG. I dealt with anger and pain through substance abuse back then and still do so in 2024. It's better now "I mean once in a while, but not all the time".
Max Payne is one of my top five favorite franchises of all time and this is my favorite intro to any game, ever. NES to Xbox Series X.
Rip James McCaffery. Thank you.
The moment he put those roses on his son and wife's grave just broken me into tears. One of the best video games characters I had ever seen. I love this game because it's story match to my life story. ;(
*daughter
Daughter
Daughter
This nigga said his son 🗿
It's a daughter, her name is Rose
Max Payne trilogy remake is all I need. I’d be more hyped for that that and RDR 3 than even GTA 6
I love this scene because he was already depressed and then moved to São Paulo. Now, as a Paulistano since I was born, my brother in Christ, you just made a very poor choice.
it's over
4:05 The most horrifying and epic moment
Its sooo sad, demoralizing, and depressing to watch a great hero like Max Payne killing so many bad guys, watch his family and daughter be killed, and cant even get a good romance with Mona Sax because of Vlad! No matter how strong a man is.....he will eventually break down hard especially if there is no woman or hope left. The true horrible cost of being a hero.....smdh
This is Love. Love hurts.
It's story of every men. Nearly everyone can relate to max
It's tragic
@@tamojitbasu8634 Well, we can't relate to the pain of having your child and love of your life murdered.
Not just a daughter but a new born baby at that!!! Can you imagine how that fuck up a mans head seeing his new born baby killed when he comes home let alone his wife also?
If your enemy defeats you, you may perish in honor, but if you are defeated by yourself, you live in tragedy..
Max is all of us who lost their loved ones but still getting along with life through suffering and pain
this game tear me aparts
Max Payne 1: broken man willing for revenge
Max Payne 2: lost man trying to find meaning to his life
Max Payne 3: old and fucked up dude tired of life
"Yes, absolutely", cue score. Brilliant directing, some of the best ever in video games and even beyond.
3:07 - 3:34 My favourite part.. Really heart touching
Yes but I would say 2:59 - 3:35
Max Payne: Revenge
Max Payne 2: The Fall
Max Payne 3: The new life
Now that you mentioned it, it feels like at the end of Max Payne 2, he is "falling" in a sense that he is delusional about accepting his family's death and Max Payne 3 is how he became after all these years.
At 1:02, Max says,
"Let it go, seriously."
i mean, seriously?
Love this part
Max Payne is the most unfortunate man ever. All his life, fate played cruel jokes upon him. He lost everyone he wanted to keep for himself. He lost everyone he thought belonged to him. His wife, his child, Mona Sax etc. - all of them left him. I would not wish the misfortunes of Max upon my greatest enemies.
One of the more realistic depictions of addiction in video games.
His wretching on an empty stomach in the middle of the game is just heartbreaking. Watching a man who let himself go because he lost everything to live for
3:02 that part made me cry(
this cutscene twists my heart into knots every time I see it. it’s such a perfect reminder of why I believe this to be one of the most flagrantly misunderstood and criminally underrated/underappreciated games i’ve ever played. the story was captivating all the way through (despite several replays) and the writing for max was fantastic despite lacking sam lake’s slick dialogue. the voice acting was first rate and phenomenal, the way you can feel max gradually change, becoming more angry, more aggressive as the game goes on felt so visceral and it was brought to life brilliantly by mccaffrey. the production value and presentation were both top notch, down to the impeccably directed cutscenes, the linear but no less spectacular set pieces, the visual style and the trippy glitch effects. the soundtrack was frankly awesome and it goes down as one of my favorites for any game (I cannot describe how invigorating it was to play through the entire trilogy and get to the exhilarating and rightfully iconic shootout in the airport) and health deserves every ounce of praise that they got. the gunplay struck a perfect balance between feeling weighty and realistic while still being remarkably smooth and fun. everything about this game is perfect to me and as someone who loves the other 2 games (max payne 1 in particular is firmly in my top 5 favorite games of all time) I believe that rockstar crafted as respectful a send off to the series as possible, one that felt unique and distinctive while also generally being one of the most utterly gripping, effortlessly replayable gaming experiences ever. this game means so much to me in so many ways and i’ll always love it/defend it.
tfw you wake up on sunday.
Max Payne: Quits smoking. "See? It's my last smoke. It's bad for the baby."
Max Payne 2: Painkiller addiction (ironically caused by the player)
This game: Alcoholic, heavy smoker and painkiller addict
This is the most heartbreaking videogame opening in recent memory for me, having lost my dad to alcoholism and smoking. I know Max is around his mid 40's here, but he looks like he's 60, due to all the trauma and self-harm. Read the comic After the Fall and it adds a totally new layer to one of my favorite videogame protagonists.
Watching in 2024 still Max payne voice acting is a best
"Say what you want about Americans, but we understand capitalism. You buy yourself a product and you get what you pay for..."
"and these chumps had paid for some angry-gringo without the sensibilities to know right from wrong"
They were correct
Replayed this last month.. what a game
Sam D so it’s worth a buy? PS3
@@CarlonxJeffery I'd buy this game if it was for 200 dollars, that's how much i love and treasure it, I've played through it around 20 times
I just replayed through this game. The shooting mechanics are so great. Loved the story and the ending just fit the character of Max Payne.
What I wouldn’t give for a remaster of this masterpiece.
After what they did to the gta trilogy. Hard no
still played very nice
Have to say, this was painful to watch as someone who’s had rock-bottom points in life. This is why I don’t want there to be a Max Payne 4, I just want the guy to rest and live the rest of his life in peace
Would you say no to a remake tho?
Or maybe a game about what happened between MP2 and MP3
@@Infinitywolf23Nope, I’d be down for that. MP 1 and 2 with 3’s graphics and mechanics
@@eee.000That’d be cool too
@@ashhabimran239 hey man , there's a comics of max payne 3 explained what happened between mp2 and mp3
One of first truly well written, flawed and human video game characters ever and one if the best.
1 of the best Games ever.
R33C3 I agree.
Sometimes fighting with life in middle class socity i feel like i am also max payne
One of best games i ever played.
Max payne 3 was ahead of it's time.
those demons will follow him for eternity. a wife and a baby girl...murdered. his lover...murdered. all of the pain in his life has always started with the death of a woman. a sordid tale...dirty business.
DABangEm84 B.B.
Mona can survive depending on what mode you play on
@@batalorian7997 mona dies anyways... u can "skip" her death, but yeah, she dies.
@@batalorian7997 But it ain't canon 😭
You could headcanon it but the reality is that she dies.. it's even confirmed in the comic precursor to Max Payne 3's events
@@KH0LRA 1) bullshit comic
2) Max Payne 3 is way too dissociated from Max Payne 2 and it seems the devs didn’t understand the second installment. MP3 works great as a sequel to MP1, but sucks as a sequel to MP2.
