    I switched from a notebook computer to a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra with Samsung DeX. At my desk I connect the smartphone to a Samsung M7 Smart TV Monitor via USB-C; when not at my desk I connect the smartphone to a NexDock 360 (wireless and wired model) usually in wireless mode. This began as an experiment to determine whether a smartphone could replace a notebook computer for software development and writing. At almost the 2 year mark the experiment is a success.
    If I was a student attending university studying criminology, for example, a Samsung DeX capable smartphone combined with a lapdock would be an easy decision. No idea why Samsung is not heavily advertising the benefits of Samsung DeX to college and university students.

    if the nexdock was like $100 i think it has a good chance to gain some notoriety, but at that current price, its for basically nobody. still cool though

      That's how much a portable 1080p touchscreen costs anyway. 180ish would be a sweet spot.

      @@Bc232klm yea expecting that to be 100 is silly, it also has a better inside it. That shoots up the cost a bit

    I've used DeX to watch football games that are not available in my area in the TV. But I run my UA-cam channel off of my phone. The dock would help me a lot.. mhm.. now I'm thinking about it.

    I looked into this setup because it looked interesting when I started with DeX, but honestly I'd rather keep my laptop.
    However, when I used Samsung DeX paired with some "AR" glasses and a foldable keyboard, that's where I saw the great potential of both, DeX and the AR glasses (XReal Air in my case, for now). Unfortunately all the foldable keyboards I have tried so far are subpar, and the AR glasses are still very new 1st gen devices with significant bugs (specially in the software side), but the potential is there, and they are actually usable as a travel companion (where I feel comfortable leaving the laptop behind), but not yet good enough for day-to-day use and full-time laptop replacement.

    Just learned about DEX on my S21. I tested it with my hdmi monitor and wireless keyboard/mouse. I use Splashtop to remote to servers I manage and it was perfect for that. We may get low cost Samsung tablets with DEX for offsite employees instead of a full workstation. Nice that Samsung made DEX usable

    Having used Samsung Dex semi regularly for awhile now, I can guarantee you your S21 is gonna overheat like CRAZY in that back pouch after extended usage.
    I just ordered one because I actually want to try to use my Z Fold 3 specifically as a laptop replacement. My old laptop just died, basically, and I'm in the process of building a gaming PC. After I finish building the gaming PC, I'm actually interested in getting a Steam Deck. I also have a Nintendo Switch; both the switch and steam deck are compatible with this as well. I always carry a large Logitech bluetooth mouse with me, as well as Skullcandy ear buds, so poor touchpad and speaker performance are a non issue to me. So, funnily enough.....I think I'm one of those 6 people in the middle of that Venn diagram lmfaoooo.
    I've been daily driving Dex with a nice Type-C Dongle I got off Amazon so I'm wondering what kind of Daisy chain tomfoolery I can get up to with this.

    to be fair it's also useful with type-c monitors, for example if your laptop is broken(I once had my laptop poured with cider and had to use dex for a day to watch UA-cam when I eat.
    useful thing to have, another usecase is if u are from some third'world country and don't have money to buy a pc.

    I like DeX. It works. I would imagine that DeX will have its own use-case scenario. If one has a powerful laptop, I doubt if such a user would even think of DeX. The Nexdock and a Samsung device simply enables a desktop environment that could make productivity a lot more comfortable. Personally, I have had bad experiences with laptops, and I am in no hurry to get another one. With Nexdock and a Samsung device, I have the option to be more productive than using a Samsung phone on its own. A larger screen to work on makes a big difference - pun intended.

    In the end it's a usb-c monitor with a keyboard and mouse. Connecting "DEX" to a monitor and connect mouse and keyboard with Bluetooth would have the same effect.
    A setup I also didn't use in the past although I had the chance for. As a tech nerd I have too many devices that I don't use such a limited solution.

  • @mytubemurray

    I think the core benefit that you touched on is the ability to use andriod in a desktop environment while being able to remote into a windows or other os system. So yes, it's not a laptop replacement, but that isnt the point. I am using a dex base tablet to do casual android use while being able to quickly switch to my server and do some work without skipping a beat.

    As someone with a Samsung phone, I liked testing out DeX a few times, it honestly worked great. But I have laptop dock I can use instead and could never justify something like this.
    Use case......KVM for a server rack, with the right usb c adapter could just walk up to what ever system and access directly.

    The last few times ive visited family (a flight away) ive not been able to take my 2013 laptop. When I arrive I find my 2006 laptop (2 in 1 with a pen!!), although I quite enjoy the novelty of the old laptop, the pain does sometimes make me regret getting a mid tier samsung phone instead of a higher end dex compatible one. I wouldnt buy a fancy dock but just use other peripherals that are already available where i would be travelling to.

    You can just carry a phone with you to hot desks with monitors, mice and keyboards and off you go. Even present stuff in physical meetings. Just with your phone.. So, with light tasks, you don't need to carry a laptop (bag) with you. That's the beauty of it really.

      Similar to several Linux distros that can exist on a flash drive, they’re persistent I think it’s called. While it sounds impressive, I never actually had a compelling reason to have that portable of an operating system.
      What might push me over with Dex, would be if photo transfer and editing to/on a bigger screen had an impact on how I use my phone as a mobile computer. Video too of course.

    I'm considering doing something like this because most tasks I do right now are limited by my laptop. When I do 3d modeling or program machine learning models my laptop can't handle much so I would need to shell out a ton of money for a laptop that could handle this. But if I build a powerful computer at home and can remote in with my phone and get access to the increased processing power and GPU. I don't think I would get the nexdock tho, I would probably come up with a different, cheaper, and possibly diy solution for the screen and controls

The huion comes with a stand and i also dont have a laptop but a really powerful dekstop so i dont need a laptop. Only until recently, which is why i got this setup together for art class and school note taking. This is pretty portable for me atleast just buy a mixjoy bag that fits a 16 incu screen. And vawhlaa, you have yourself a portable clipstudio paint note taking setup.

    Samsung DEX is a modified Gentoo KDE plasma GNU Linux. If you look into KDE or maybe Gnome desktop environment Linux it look like the same. In main usage for the Samsung Dex is that you can use it if you are in mobile and gives lectures a hybrid between the mobile device and a mini laptop that can be projected into the projector to your students on in online lectures. Yes, I use this in both iPad and Samsung (Dex) and including my Big Linux laptop. This is useful due to the fact that your country that you live in has different price than us here in Asia. And at the same time, different usage compare here in Asia.

    nexdock has been around for sometime as a modern version of motorola atrix lapdock. why? because the the lapdock has been very popular at one time with sbcs like the raspberry pi for having a keyboard, screen and touchpad and usb hub on the go for less clutter. nexdock came around and ran with the idea now that motorola discontinued that lapdock device intended for their phone.
    i got a couple motorola lapdocks for a quick setup with khadas vim, pis and anything that might need a quick display, keyboard and mouse. it is more utility for me than a daily driver. nexdock is a bit above my pricepoint but has been somewhat on my radar.
    it might be worth trying with a zimaboard 2.0 when it comes out or the zimablade/edge (whatever it’s called) when they come out next year. both will be separate products.

    I randomly one day plugged my samsung phone into my laptop dock via usb c. Just for a laugh, to see what happens. I knew it would do some sort of "good as can be" screen mirroring. But was completely blown away with what shortly came up on screen. Technology just continues to surprise us.

    Server tech usage: plug it in the usb C port and check what you want/need to check.
    Sometimes things are without label, missing label, with incorrect label. And maybe the tech is already in the server room with some spare parts.

    • @guy_autordie
      @guy_autordie 8 місяців тому

      It's more for a paradigm change usage. The phone is replaced by the watch and this is the interface, or a "tablet" screen. You then stop losing the phone, just losing the screen.

  • @christopher480
    @christopher480 18 днів тому

    Despite what this reviewer says for plenty of ppl this can replace a laptop......lets not forget that sooooo many ppl have laptops they didnt need in the first place(the ppl that bought laptops that never leave the house).....lol...not the ppl...the laptops.....ive been working as an IT tech for 30 yrs. and have seen that quite a bit. Between this and a decent chromebox (asus chromebox 3 i7 or better) the av person is good to go. Most ppl have smart tvs as well these days. Most ppl are not editing video to go on youtube for a living. This also works for a steamdeck, or other handhelds. They also make a tablet and one with a 360 screen.

  • @longclaw99
    @longclaw99 6 місяців тому

    IMO, this idea can become a 'forever laptop' in the future. But we'd need top-spec hardware, high resolution and refresh-rate screen, the best trackpad and keyboard technology could produce, 2-in-1 design, etc etc which can make it pricy.
    But then once bought, you never have to buy another laptop for as long as you live. Just upgrade your phone, and each time your 'laptop' upgrades too.
    It's not feasible... yet. But at the rate that phone power/processing is increasing, I actually think it may end up being borderline inevitable that these things eventually fully replace real laptops in the future.
    But who knows? For now, it's a really cool novelty.

      Yeah, Apple could live up their promises and make iPads a true laptop replacement, if only they switched to MacOS when connected to keyboards.
      I'm honestly more interested in the phone idea though.
      Imagine this, instead of PCs, you just have "docks", consisting of a USB C monitor with a keyboard and mouse plugged in.
      You plug in your phone and it charges the phone but also runs an MacOS on the monitor and connects to the peripherals.
      Basically a screen + dongle thing. You can bring it anywhere, libraries could have these "docks", your home could have one or 2, your workplace has one, etc.
      Would be amazing, could also be done by a credit card footprint mini pc like a raspberry pi ig, but those aren't already carried around.

    Strange... I use it all the time for gaming and productivity sessions... I get where they're going with this. You're just not thinking fourth dimensionally. That idea is actually a step ahead... Smartphones are the new age personal computers because of their size and overall compute performance (They are as powerful as PS4s on paper)... They're just leveraging that power by creating more use case scenarios for its expression.. The problem is that they're isn't many context aware desktop class apps on Android. Apps that can satisfy the needs of every use case scenario whether it be phone, Tablet or Desktop... Android is more powerful than you think, it's just that Google isn't pushing that angle... Samsung however is at least aware of it and so is Google (Hence Desktop mode settings being available in Android hidden in developer options)...
    If you want to use a $1200 Smartphone for only Facebook and phone calls like a techno scrub be my guest, but the idea of having a powerful pocket sized personal computer that can morph and change depending on the context represented in both hardware AND software is way out there and doable... In the end it's up to Google to make the leap. Besides, phones now are so much more powerful than the Nintendo switch its almost a joke. After spending the money I should be able to use it for at least console gaming. Which it does quite well actually...

      USB hub should work and File Manager+ is a very good app to handle large amounts of files. The only downside is that Dex cannot run two instances of the same application (say, two documents opened in the same app). Android can actually handle this in some apps, but Dex has no option to open additional window for the same app for a proper multitasking.
