    Amazing tutorial! I also got great result in the end. However, somewhere after 90th frame the fire source moves slightly away from rocket in the direction opposite to the rocket's flight, and it looks like fire is emited not from the rocket, but from air under the rocket. Maybe you have some ideas why could this happen?

    I tried this after watching this tutorial. But didn't get perfect result. Will you please make a full tutorial of it?

    Great tutorial!
    One question though - how did you make 3DSMAX to play the sim so smooth in the editor window? I have pretty fast PC and it still stalls playback like hell (with way less voxels than in your video).

    Notice quite a few adjustments made during the tutorial that are never mentioned. I followed this as close as I could, even with the unmentioned parameter changes and I get nothing that looks like what you have. What versions are your running of max and PFD?

      Hi PunJedi and thanks for reaching out !
      I am using Max 2017 and Phoenix FD 4.20. Let's checkout the settings :
      1. First, very important. Be sure to have a correct unit scale, so your rocket model have a real world scale. For example, my rocket is 90m high and I'm using 1 unit = 3 cm. An incorrect rocket model scale may lead to a simulation different than mine
      2. Here the settings for the emitters:
      - Emitter 1: Volume Brush emit mode with a noise at 50. Temperature at 3000 with smoke at 0.5
      - Emitter 2: Surface Force emit mode, with outgoing velocity at 10m and smoke at 1.0
      3. Here the settings for the PhoenixFD grid:
      - Cell size (simulation quality) : in my final render, I used a cell size of 0.3m
      - Time scale at 0.8 (useful to enhance the "large-scale" behavior of a simulation)
      - Fluidity method : PCG symmetric with a quality of 30.
      - Cooling: you may try to increase a little bit the cooling to 0.3 if there is to much fire going sideways.
      That's really all. Hope it will help you with your scene :)

      @@HollywoodIllusionVFX Thanks for responding. The main problem I have is that I am using PhoenixFD 5.02 Advanced on 3dsmax2020. Vast differences in how it handles things now. Great tutorial but just be sure to give a heads up on software versions.

    Good job making video that's to the point. Straight to the point!
    I hate tutorials that are 80 minutes long.
    I've been using 3ds max for 22 years now.
    Back in the old days there were no video tutorials....just a few written ones online.
    3ds max has come a long way!

      Oh wow so you are a 3ds Max expert ! Yes I also don’t like videos that are too long, no need to be talking for one hour
      I started using 3ds Max 17 years ago, and I remember following writing tutorials to learn how to make realistic renders of sports cars haha
      Glad you like the tutorial :)

      @@HollywoodIllusionVFX Hey man, may I ask which renderer you use to render the smokes? The details and denoising look great if you exported them on a home PC haha

    • @HollywoodIllusionVFX
      @HollywoodIllusionVFX  2 роки тому

      I am using V-Ray Next, which works great with Phoenix’s smoke, and it has a great denoising render element to remove the noise and keep the details !

    Hi, another question, any recommended V ray render settings? I get all kinds of white dots in the highlights, very ugly

    • @HollywoodIllusionVFX
      @HollywoodIllusionVFX  2 роки тому

      Hi !! Yes the white dots are actually a Phoenix FD problem. The only way I found to remove them is by disabling the fire lights (uncheck “create fire lights”) in the volumetric render settings, and to add your own V-Ray lights that will illuminate your scene. This is what I did for this scene

    Does this work in VRay 6? I try and it is just a black screen

    • @HollywoodIllusionVFX
      @HollywoodIllusionVFX  2 роки тому +1

      Hi ! Yes it works in VRay 6. Usually when it renders as a black screen, it’s because the file path set to store the rendered images is incorrect (in the render setup > V-Ray > Frame buffer)
      To be sure, you can activate the log window in the render setup > Settings. This will tell you exactly what the error is when you render

    Hi, how long does it all take to render?
    Are there any tricks to render faster?
    Thanks.

    • @HollywoodIllusionVFX
      @HollywoodIllusionVFX  2 роки тому

      Hi ! It took me about 8 hours to render the whole simulation with Vray :)
      Yes there are 2 tricks to render it faster.
      - The first one is to disable the fire lights from the PhoenixFD “rendering volumetric options”, and replace it with normal Vray lights placed at the boosters’ location
      - The second trick is to increase the step % in the Phoenix FD rendering rollout (for example 200%)

      @@HollywoodIllusionVFX I noticed you have 13 billion cells, what's your rig if all that took you 8 hours to render and how long did the sim take to complete?
