  • Jorge Mester conducting the Juilliard Chamber Orchestra.
Narrated by Albert Fine and Leon Kuntz
Okay, so maybe the title will cause controversy in the comments, but I genuinely think this is the worst performance of Peter and the Wolf I’ve ever heard. The production feels scattered and rushed, the narration is incoherent at times, and the performance isn’t really that incredible, musically speaking. That said, the orchestra sounds perfectly fine, considering it’s being performed by college students. But what really sent me over the edge was the end. I’m not even going to tell you, just wait for it.
For those who wonder where this comes from; in my quest to find as much info on P.D.Q. Bach as I can, I happened upon this from one of the Juilliard Concerts from 1959.

The narration is one of those instances of people thinking they are being frightfully clever but are actually incredibly annoying.

It comes from the first ever humorous concert at Juilliard. It also featured the Quodlibet as well as an early version of the Concerto for Horn and Hardart.
