The Venus Project - Housing

  • The Venus Project recommends that the present state and aims of architecture be redefined to fit the evolving needs of individuals in this new, emergent culture. The architecture and individual dwellings of future cities will evolve on an entirely different basis from today's houses. With the intelligent application of humane technologies, we will be able to provide and allow for a wide array of unique individual homes. Their structural elements will be flexible and coherently arranged to best serve individual preference. These pre-fabricated, modular homes, embodying a high degree of flexibility inconceivable in times past, could be built anyplace one might imagine, amidst forests, atop mountains, or on remote islands. All of these dwellings can be designed as self-contained residences with their own thermal generators and heat concentrators. Photovoltaic arrays would be built into the skin of the building and into the windows themselves. "Thermopanes" would be used to tint out the bright sunlight by variable patterns of shading. All these features could be selected by the occupant to supply more than enough of the energy required to operate the entire household. Homes could be prefabricated of a new type of pre-stressed, reinforced concrete with a flexible ceramic external coating that would be relatively maintenance free, fireproof, and impervious to the weather. Their thin shell construction can be mass-produced in a matter of hours. With this type of construction, there would be minimal damage from earthquakes and hurricanes.

    The sidewalks and roads will be made from waste plastic and everyone will have a Sinclair C5 bike. There will also be Futuro LLC homes and Hexacube homes and camper RV vans parked all around.

    For some reason freeform buildings using rebar, a mesh substrate and aircrete sprayed over it never really caught on. Probably too expensive. but I am not sure.

      Or perhaps we unlock something greater:
      “Our ships, in a sense, are grown, and they have this ability to shift their shape - and even within the cabin, to provide what we need, when we need it, and when we don't need it, it simply absorbs back into the walls, or the floors, or the ceilings.
      And it's all made out of the same seamless material.”

    I really don't think that would be the case, as if there was an unlimited amount of resources for anyone, where would the greed come from?? if someone stole resources, what would they do with them? They wouldn't be able to sell them, or do anything with them, it would be pointless. When there is no need or worries, there is no greed, no crime.

    you have to see the problem from outside the box, when you eliminate money from the equation new incentives start to emerge, because people don't need to make money to pay bills and such. They start to do what they want to do and when you give them the tools to follow their dreams (by tools I mean to educate them in the field they want to study). People become happier and are motivated by the challenge they face everyday doing what passionate them.(Fresco said that, keep watching his videos)

  • @chrisluna97
    @chrisluna97 12 років тому

    I would actually argue that. I think that in a society that encourages the better understanding of the human mind, there would be more interaction among people. They would have more time to interact than if they had to worry about paying their bills. People would be happier because they wouldn't have to worry about whether or not they can feed their children. Also, not all jobs would become obsolete, only the repetitive ones. Jobs in fields such as Medicine, architecture, technology would..

    Even though there would be no monetary system or laws, It's far from being an anarchy. People would be in a continuous state of learning, and would find that laws are not necessary, and there would be no reason to break any if there were to be any laws.

    Even with interesing high tech jobs there is a problem of motivation. I'm an MD graduating a year from now. It takes about 15 years of training after high school. you work REALLY hard and it's stressful, I'm always sleep deprived ect.if everything was free, why would I choose to do that rather than do the things I like? I'd go trekking, explore the world, sit in coffee shops, and read some medical books for interest. I love medicine but still, what will motivate people to go to work?

    I agree with everything about the Venus project except for the resource-based economy. It's just a misconception about the monetary system. Of course people will not steal money anymore if it doesn't exist, but if everything is free, they can easily take greedy advantage of all resources.

    @FranFNH That is wishful thinking. Even though a more open environment in science and engineering could enable for greater advancements, you can't deny that there is hard work being done today and discoveries take time to make. It's not like we are stuck in an age of no scientific development due to the monetary system! Monetary incentive, whether we like it or not, does play a role in pushing science forward.

  • @JP.Q
    @JP.Q 12 років тому

    @FranFNH Yes, and I did enjoy it a lot. Jacque Fresco is undoubtedly more than a bright man, but I must admit sometimes he makes statements that to me sound too far reaching. I would love to live in a society envionsed in such a way, though!

  • @JP.Q

    I like these ideas, but they still sound too much like science fiction. For instance, you mention that the computer will understand natural language. That would be great, but you cant assert that it's possible. So far, I have never heard of a software capable of understanding the meaning of natural language. Also, are you saying the buildings will be adaptable after being built? Is that available right now, either?

    My personal opinion is that we should provide ACTUAL homes for people in third world countries before thinking about wasting precious resources and money to live in the lap of luxury. Another problem is what about the lower class in our country? Will they have to live in slums, while we are in our grand bubble and cannot see the picture outside of our designer neighborhoods? Also, I know a lot of people who would like to have their house by their own design, not glossy white and rounded.

    Nice idea but I don't think it can ever work. You need human menial labor in society. i.e all the minimum wage jobs. What will motivate people to go to work to a dead end job if not money? I don't think we can replace everything with machines. And even if you could would you want to have your morning coffee served by a robot rather than a barista? What about a robot instead of a hairdresser? you would lose a lot of human interaction in such a society.
