Regarding Anneke's guest featuring. It's like a cheat code for a band. Not just a song becomes great but the whole album. Anneke makes everything great.
I've listened to Within Temptation *a lot*, Anneke less so, but hearing the two of them together *and* seeing CV's ecstatic reaction makes this extra special.
Sharon was sick during this recording, she said in the DVD's behind the scene portion that she had a cold so that's why she sounded congested (of course, if you've never heard Sharon before you won't know that. hahahaha)
I remember seeing Within Temptation live when I was younger and part way through Sharon apologised for sounding a bit off as she was ill. She was literally album perfect sounding. Just incredible how talented a singer she is!
@@Monscent I assume your comment was about my comment and not Zack. If correct, it was not my intent to belittle anyone so not sure which part of my comment you found annoying. I certainly am a fan of Sharon and of Elizabeth. I was stating that Sharon sounded great even though she was not at 100%. I was also stating that I did not expect Elizabeth to know that as this was her first time listening to Sharon. I love Elizabeth's learned and very entertaining reactions and commentaries and have watched many of her videos. A fanboy? Yes, of both, so why stop? Why was giving the video a like and leaving a positive comment (which helps Elizabeth's in how UA-cam makes recommendations) a bad thing? Not angry or even annoyed, just curious.
I'd consider myself a Within Temptation fan (not their biggest fan, but still). I've been to two concerts, have some of their albums + of course the Black Symphony Blu Ray. But I wouldn't call Sharon an exceptional live singer. She's certainly not bad, I'd even go so far as to call her good. But her voice often sounds like it could "break away" every moment. (Sorry if that's not the correct term, English is my 2nd language - but I hope you know what I mean.) She sounds like she's pushing it, especially on the high notes. Her falsetto is fine, but when she's doing head voice... IDK. I should add when I wrote "always" I meant all the live performances of her _that I have heard_, which is of course a very limited subset. So... maybe I got unlucky. If you can recommend a good live recording, I'd be eager to listen to it and change my opinion :)
I had always thought of metal as really angry music and therefore I didn’t want to share those emotions. Now I understand it as very emotional, encompassing the whole range of emotions. What I have heard so far on this channel is deeply positive and beautiful!!! I am really enjoying my education.
One way to describe it: There's more to metal than just metal ;) For more emotional stuff you might also want to give 'tallulah' by 'sonata arctica' a try.
Late to the 'metal' party myself (only 7or 8 years), and ironically enough, Within Temptation was my gateway band into the genre! This journey of discovery has been just awesome.....enjoy yours!!
Loved your reaction to this one. It’s my favorite duet ever. Sharon has no classical training, yet she is my favorite singer in the world. Her head voice is so light and airy. She also has a lot of power in her chest voice. She is far from technical perfection like Floor, but her voice really resonates with me and moves me more than any other singer.
Cool reaction. Anneke kickstarted all the dutch scene, and Within Temptation is one of the first symphonic metal bands from that scene, so you just witnessed a glorious moment, even more epic considering they had the Metropole Orchestra playing in the background. Pure magic. The natural step now is to check 'Ayreon - Valley of the Queens', where Anneke sings with Floor Jansen and Marcela Bovio
Hopefull you do more Anneke by herself, especially in her The Gathering period. Songs like Travel, Waking Hour and so many more really showcase how unique her voice and sense of melody is (Live from A Noise Severe dvd).
'Leaves'. Not the original though (as amazing as it is), but Anneke with Danny Cavanagh. Just her voice and his piano. Besides, it's fascinating to see how the feel of the song changes, when sang by the same woman, but mature.
^^This! Anneke is unbelievably good! Travel and Illuminating are some of my favorites. Also something from Mandyllion on a more recent performance would be awesome.
That was a beautiful and heartfelt reaction, Elizabeth ❤ It may not be for everyone, but Sharon's voice exudes emotions out of me. For more of her vocals, you may check out The Swan Song from the same live show (Black Symphony), another of WT's beautiful power ballad.
Anneke is my favourite and you can't change my mind... Would love to see you react to her band back in the 90s, The Gathering. Strange Machines from their 1996 show is great.
Wonderful duet by yet another two Dutch ''metal' ladies. Anneke being the inspiration of a whole generation of power voices is definately worth checking on a song of her own. The Gathering - Travel (live TG25 is the best version) gives a great idea of her singing.
Elisabeth, if you're also interested in (mainly) male voices, please react to these TOP VARIETY OF MANY MUSICAL INTRUMENTS/SINGERS: The Source is the 9th studio album from Ayreon, a progressive metal/rock opera project by Dutch musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen, released on April 28, 2017. ‘The Day That The World Breaks Down’ is a song that features all 11 (well known) main guest singers [James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Tommy Karevik (Kamelot, Seventh Wonder), Tommy Rogers (Between the Buried and Me) , Simone Simons (Epica), Nils K. Rue (Pagan's Mind), Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Mike Mills (Toehider), Russell Allen (Symphony X), Michael Eriksen (Circus Maximus), Floor Jansen (Nightwish)] and is taken from that album. Arjen himself is telling (in subtitles) who the singers are and which instruments are used and by what standards. Btw. The clip is 13 min. long and I think you won’t regret it !! (live chat worthy ??) Official (Arjen’s) clip: ua-cam.com/video/oFuMKdrzPqU/v-deo.html
Hats off to whoever wrote the song, if it came from her or their souls, next level, the more I listen to music, the more I wonder? This band belted it out.
If you're interested in more songs by Within Temptation, I can heartily recommend: The Cross, See Who I Am, Lost, What Have You Done. It might be hard to find good quality live recordings of many of these, WT wasn't as popular back when these songs were new, so recorded versions may be a better listen (What Have You Done especially has a lot of layering and mixing that can't really be done justice to live).
The moment the preview picture popped up, I instantly got goosebumps and chills down my spine .. been waiting/hoping for this one for a while. Going to be interesting xD
Anneke used to sing for the Gathering (joined in 93) and she inspired a new generation of female rockers like Floor. Anneke's newest band is call "Vuur" Check out the video "Vuur - Days Go By - London [Live at Masters of Rock 2017]" to see a rocking side of her with a great vocal performance
Within Temptation is one of my favorite live shows to see. I rushed through my work for the day to make sure I don't miss this one. The only positive thing I have gotten from Covid is it allows me to still work from home and catch my favorite content at the same time!
Anneke is an awesome musician and singer songwriter but also would like to compliment her on her hair because she should also be a hair model with all of the different styles along with different lengths and different hair color with these different styles and she rocked them all. Anneke is the queen of hair in music.
Anneke van Giersbergen has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. I've seen her live with her former band The Gathering several times. Once they gave a very intimate concert in Groningen (NL) and it was really magical. You have to listen to much more of her music. Her voice is incredible and hypnotizing.
Within Temptation is one of my favorite groups. I always feel something when I listen to their music, which is not always the case with music nowadays.
Greetings from Finland! I'm glad to be back to witness you reacting to two more amazing Dutch female metal vocalists, Anneke & Sharon, of whom the latter has never taken any singing lessons, but is completely self taught. Anneke van Giersbergen is a legend in her field of music, having started her career with "Bad Breath", but especially with "The Gathering". She also inspired Floor Jansen to become a female metal vocalist when Floor was 16 years old & saw Anneke on stage with "The Gathering".
You've heard Floor Jansen, Sharon den Adel, Anneke van Giersbergen, and Simone Simons. There's still two more Dutch metal maidens to check out. Charlotte Wessels of Delain and Dianne van Giersbergen (ex-Xandria singer; no relation to Anneke). Here's more songs to check out: - "Burning Bridges" by Delain. - "Nightfall" by Xandria. - "The Howling" by Within Temptation. - "The Essence of Silence (Official Live Video)" by Epica. - "Black Ninja" by Battle Beast. - "Blind and Frozen" by Beast in Black. Thanks!
Anneke's former band The Gathering are absolute pioneers when it comes to female voices in the metal genre. They started as a Death Metal Band in the early 90's. Even back then and even before Anneke joined the band in 94/95, they mixed male Death Metal vocals with a female voice.
So Ayreon will be done soon too I'm guessing. To really get a sense of the sheer scope of Ayreon you'd need to either start with: the Eye of Ra from Ayreon Universe, or Songs of the Ocean from Into the Electric Castle Live. Either is fine as they both follow the same format. The ending of both are more or less a but, but, but...
The day world breaks down for a "normal" studio version Twisted Coil with Damian Wilson (from the electric castle show offcourse) Valley of the Queens (from the Ayreon Universe show) If u ran out, I will have some other suggestions :D
Anneke: pronounced /'Ah nuh kuh/ (emphasis on first syllable). By the way, I thought you'd listened to Ayreon's Valley of the Queens before, which features Anneke with Floor. I'm not much of a nationalist, but can't help to be proud of the Dutch girls...
I swear there's no way Sharon can be human. Sometimes when she hits those high notes I literally cannot tell if it's actually her or a violin. And apparently she performed this duet *two days* after having bronchitis. Together they are just ethereal. But Sharon can definitely hit those powerful lower notes too, and she's done a lot of that in subsequent albums! I really recommend The Howling, Faster, and The Reckoning for a look at the other side to her magical voice.
Right?! Also it deserves to be noted that Sharon is completely self-taught - she’s never had any professional vocal training. I think what really makes me jealous of Sharon is her song-writing ability - she is the sole composer of “Somewhere” & co-wrote the lyrics with the other founding band member, partner, the father of her two kids.
Now this is incredible: I just watched the Floor Jansen reaction video and ended up thinking I should recommend Anneke van Giersbergen. Then I clicked the next reaction video and here she is!
Sharon has no official training. She admitted that she tried but was too impatient for formal training. To note, she was also sick at this concert. A couple days before she had lost her voice and the concert was almost cancelled. Sharon has a beautiful voice ❤️ Songs of Within Temptation to react to (live) are: Caged Ice Queen Angels The Promise Memories Frozen The Howling The Cross Candles Enter Deciever of Fools
Thank you for reacting to their song. I am a long time Within Temptation fan. I have the Black Symphony on DVD. I have heard the Somwhere duet at least 100 times and it never fails to give me chills. Sharon is mostly a self-taught vocalist. She met her partner Robert Westerholt (guitarist) while she was in high school and they formed the band in 1996. they currently have three children. She also has a degree in fashion design and designs all the band's costumes. The concert is incredible, so good. One song, in particular, has a deep meaning for me, "Forgiven", it is told from the perspective a suicide survivor to the person she lost. As one who both has and advocates for those with mental illness, the song rips my heart out every time.
It’s important to note that Sharon had been ill before this concert and after seeing WT live twice, I think she was breathier in this performance for that reason. Please listen to more to appreciate Sharon’s range and power.

I really love how you really react on what are you listening to. I mean with words and with your face expression when you are listening, it's wonderful
I've seen this live. It's forever engraved in my brain. It shows on your face how much you're having a good time. Your genuine emotion reminds me of that moment. I cried several times during that show. It was very unique
There needs to be more Anneke reactions to her acoustic stuff or the songs she did with Danny Cavannagh. I like her rock/metal vox, but when everything is less boisterous you really hear what an angelic voice she has.
Anneke is the best ! She always has such a charming presence on stage. She also did some great duets with Danny Cavanagh from Anathema (yet another band she collaborated with - and also a great listen)
If you want a beautiful Within Temptation song check out Forgiven. The lyrics are definitely haunting and can easily make a person tear up. Definitely my favorite Within Temptation song.
It's nice to start by reacting to a ballad, but I would recommend one of the more regular symphonic metal songs for your next reaction to them. "Stand my Ground" is one of my favourites :)
Nice. Also noticed the Devin Townsend inspired Octopus in the background! Anneke does a ton of stuff with Devin you should check out. Ih-Ah or Grace at the Retinal Circus are cool to check out.
The first time I heard this it brought me to tears. It's just so unbelievably beautiful. Within temptation is amazing. Anneke is also so very talented. I always said if anybody wanted to hear what angels sound like, they have to hear this
After all these different songs and genres I think an interesting reaction would be to Blackmore's Night - maybe something like Village Lantern or Under a Violet Moon
This was a new one for me. I have never heard either singer, and enjoyed it so much! They both have beautiful voices, and sound so good together. I definitely want to hear more!

Sharon has no formal training. I believe this was toward the middle of the concert though. I don’t believe she normally takes that many breaths. I would actually prefer you watch another song of Sharon’s later on, because her voice is normally fuller and more impressive than it is here. Even though she still did great. She actually is one of my favorite voices in the world.
Man, having watched this channel for a long time, and going back to this video, I am so happy to see its progression and also to yet AGAIN experience how Elizabeth's skill and professionalism helps me fall in love, over and over, with songs and artists I already love. For someone for whom music is a predominant way of relating to life and the world, this is a tremendous, incredible, nearly unspeakable gift.

Regarding Anneke's guest featuring. It's like a cheat code for a band. Not just a song becomes great but the whole album. Anneke makes everything great.
Amorphis yet another finnish metal band. Also should watch Within Temptation feat. Tarja - What about us.
Anneke has been one of my top 3 favourite vocalists since 1995. There's something with her mix, power and variation that never gets old.
Yes! More Within Temptation, please! I still remember the first time I heard them.
Just incredible how talented a singer she is!
why is there always someone like you in the comments bringing down the mood? Stop being such an annoying fanboy.
Anneke has one the most beautiful voices ever. You should certainly check her work on the Gathering days.
I had always thought of metal as really angry music and therefore I didn’t want to share those emotions. Now I understand it as very emotional, encompassing the whole range of emotions. What I have heard so far on this channel is deeply positive and beautiful!!! I am really enjoying my education.
Thanks for being open minded. There is a lot more to metal music than just raw aggression.
One way to describe it: There's more to metal than just metal ;)
For more emotional stuff you might also want to give 'tallulah' by 'sonata arctica' a try.
@@lalystar4230 thank you I will.
Late to the 'metal' party myself (only 7or 8 years), and ironically enough, Within Temptation was my gateway band into the genre! This journey of discovery has been just awesome.....enjoy yours!!
@@lalystar4230 I concur !
The Gathering's Anneke era is angelic. Best female voice for my taste.
Totally agree with that statement. Same here.
Same. I think BECAUSE her voice is not technically perfect, it moves me more. For me Sharon and Tarja are my favs.
Yes. And for some more "haunting" the song "Alone"
A Sound Relief performance of The Gathering is great too. I still have the DVD! I would basically recommend any and every song from it)))
Yes, yes yes Travel and Waking Hour are the absolute essentials
To see Sharon belting full-throttle, check Within Temptation's "Faster" or "Sinéad"
A Noise Severe version I would rather pick!
such a good verson of the song!
Anneke has the voice of an angel
Sharon angel 😇
(live chat worthy ??)
Official (Arjen’s) clip: ua-cam.com/video/oFuMKdrzPqU/v-deo.html
MisterJ56 good suggestion!
Ayreon... YES!
Poah, Arjen Anthony Lucassen, I really digged his project as Star One, Victims of a Modern Age was a killer album!
Hats off to whoever wrote the song, if it came from her or their souls, next level, the more I listen to music, the more I wonder? This band belted it out.
Sharon den adel and Robert Westerholt (founders of WT) wrote this! :) They’re married actually isn’t that goals!?
Goals is right! Happy New Year. Thank you for answering.
@@wannabet2647 Happy New Year to u too!
Floods of tears. I haven’t heard this in over a decade and it just hit me like a wall.
Anneke is the queen of hair in music.
anneke and sharon reviewed by elizabeth. I´m happy and excited. 😊
You need to hear Anneke in The Gathering something from Mandylion like Eleanor or Strange Machines.
When that album came out, bought it the next day, i was at school that day, great time to grow up.
FINALLY ANNEKE :D Best female voice in Universe and far away :D
Here's more songs to check out:
- "Burning Bridges" by Delain.
- "Nightfall" by Xandria.
- "The Howling" by Within Temptation.
- "The Essence of Silence (Official Live Video)" by Epica.
- "Black Ninja" by Battle Beast.
- "Blind and Frozen" by Beast in Black.
Thanks!
HEY!!!!!! Don’t forget Floor’s sister!!!!
Valley of the Queens!
We definitely need a Damian Wilson reaction, so The Castle Hall shall be!
@@AntonNidhoggr or and the druids turn to stone
The day the earth break down.
The day world breaks down for a "normal" studio version
Twisted Coil with Damian Wilson (from the electric castle show offcourse)
Valley of the Queens (from the Ayreon Universe show)
If u ran out, I will have some other suggestions :D
Anneke: pronounced /'Ah nuh kuh/ (emphasis on first syllable). By the way, I thought you'd listened to Ayreon's Valley of the Queens before, which features Anneke with Floor. I'm not much of a nationalist, but can't help to be proud of the Dutch girls...
ua-cam.com/video/hmXm9f3FKcM/v-deo.html yup :)
What do you think about Angels, Memories, Sinead or her work together Tarja Paradise or the collaboration with Xzibit Run?
I see you got the octopus.
Congrats! You've summoned an Old One-- No need for a meteor strike after all!.
Haha! I thought the same thing.
Omg...first thing I noticed! Hahaha
Is that Devin Townsend’s octopus? Lol
@@darktitus I thought that too! He had a bunch of stuffed animals in his quarantine live "concerts" =)
Try "Angels" with Within Temptation.
Sharon has no official training. She admitted that she tried but was too impatient for formal training. To note, she was also sick at this concert. A couple days before she had lost her voice and the concert was almost cancelled. Sharon has a beautiful voice ❤️
Songs of Within Temptation to react to (live) are:
Caged
Ice Queen
Angels
The Promise
Memories
Frozen
The Howling
The Cross
Candles
Enter
Deciever of Fools
So happy you are going to react to Within Temptation. The wait has been unbearable :)
omigosh...you are in for such a treat Sharon is awesome and Annette is awesome....enjoy your discovery!
I would love to hear you react to more from Within Temptation!
Yep. Same here.
I've seen this live. It's forever engraved in my brain. It shows on your face how much you're having a good time. Your genuine emotion reminds me of that moment. I cried several times during that show. It was very unique
Such a sweet duet, Sharon and Anneke sound real great together 🥰
Amazing singers both for sure. I adore both.
There needs to be more Anneke reactions to her acoustic stuff or the songs she did with Danny Cavannagh. I like her rock/metal vox, but when everything is less boisterous you really hear what an angelic voice she has.
You have an amazing natural reaction which is a enormous breath of fresh air,
The Gathering's "How to measure a planet" (Annekes band) is one of my favorite records of all time
YES! All the albums leading up to and including How to measure a planet are on my eternal playlist!
Anneke is the best ! She always has such a charming presence on stage.
She also did some great duets with Danny Cavanagh from Anathema (yet another band she collaborated with - and also a great listen)
Anneke with her band 'The Gathering' motivated Floor Jansen to sing metal. :)
How to measure a planet - great album by The Gathering.
You should check out more of Anneke van Giersbergen. For example her younger self with the band The Gathering. For example in a song Strange Machines.
One of my favourite songs , can’t wait 🙂
Saw Anneke live about a week ago as support act for Floor in the Soestdijk palace gardens. Wonderfull evening.
If you want a beautiful Within Temptation song check out Forgiven. The lyrics are definitely haunting and can easily make a person tear up. Definitely my favorite Within Temptation song.
Well said, haunting beauty are exactly the right words for this song. Thumbs up
It's nice to start by reacting to a ballad, but I would recommend one of the more regular symphonic metal songs for your next reaction to them. "Stand my Ground" is one of my favourites :)
Thank you for this, Elizabeth! Within Temptation is one of my favorite bands!
Nice. Also noticed the Devin Townsend inspired Octopus in the background! Anneke does a ton of stuff with Devin you should check out. Ih-Ah or Grace at the Retinal Circus are cool to check out.
Seconding the recommendation of Ih-Ah. So gorgeous.
The entire Black Symphony is amazing to listen to. This is one of my favourite pieces from it. 💕
Please listen Within Temptation's "Memory", At one time, I began to be interested in this group from her.
Love it!
I just love '' Now and then ''
This was a new one for me. I have never heard either singer, and enjoyed it so much!
They both have beautiful voices, and sound so good together.
I definitely want to hear more!
Here are two recommendations from Within Temptation - The Promise from the same show ua-cam.com/video/39k1IQoeLAU/v-deo.html

@@ronaldboers8061 Thank you!
Rosannasfriend at this concert she just recovered from an illness that had taken her voice
But that timbre of hers rules anyway. Elizabeth said something along the lines, too: beautiful instrument.
thanks you ms elizabeth for upload this videos, the way you analyze the music is very relaxing and peacefull
Take a look at "Valley of the queens" by Ayreon;you can see how good are Anneke,Floor Jansen and Marcela Bovio together
Man, having watched this channel for a long time, and going back to this video, I am so happy to see its progression and also to yet AGAIN experience how Elizabeth's skill and professionalism helps me fall in love, over and over, with songs and artists I already love. For someone for whom music is a predominant way of relating to life and the world, this is a tremendous, incredible, nearly unspeakable gift.
if you want to listen more of Anneke, you can react to: "THE GENTLE STORM - The Storm (OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO)"
or "Ayreon - Valley Of The Queens (Ayreon Universe)"
"Anneke van Giersbergen sings Wish You Were Here" video is one of my favorite performances of hers. Just gentle singing and nice little high notes in a room while she plays guitar.
Best way to start the weekend!!
