This is a man to be respected. Thank you sir for reminding us that there's nothing wrong with doing things for yourself. It's an aspect of life lost on so much of our society. Well done.
JP Madren I’m glad to see that you are keeping traditions alive. Also you appear to be really happy doing what you do and that is the most important thing
Not only is there nothing wrong with doing things yourself, it is a measure of a man (or woman) that raise a person above the run of the mill hoard of humans.
JP Madren I just started carving spoons. Bowls are next. Do you ever teach classes or anything where new carvers can “pick your brain”... folks are impressed by actors, singers, ball players.. I’m amazed by craftsmanship. Great work sir!
Received two bowls today from Mr Madren one that I saw at his online store and the other that I asked for after speaking with him on the phone. His craftsmanship is simply amazing and his word is his bond. He shipped the bowls when he said he would and he took as much care packing them as he did making them.
Thanks for the nice words! I never thought I'd be making these for over 30 years but I still get excited as I layout each one. God hides so many beautiful things in there for me to find.
Well there are many craftsman in the world. My papa said if u Iike what u do u will never work a day in ur life. Sir I hope u continue to not work for the remainder of ur life. A true craftsman Thanx for sharing
I just bought FOUR dough bowls from Mr. Madren. What a wonderful man. He showed us how he makes his bowls and i couldn't choose just one. I can't wait to get home and start baking!
Awsome craftsmanship, now a days everything is machine operated and mass produced while this craftsmanship is an meticulous attention to detail functional work of art that no bread bowl will be exactly like another. Great job and thank you for sharing your video. Awsome!
Just started making bowls myself, although it’s rare for me to get lumps of wood that big, although I’ve got a mate who lives out in the sticks (‘scuse the pun), and gets wood from a tree surgeon now, and I get to pick through them. It’s a wonderful hobby which I started by just whittling and then spoon carving. I would like to ease off from my gardening job and do carving full time but my customers would be devastated!
JP it's good to see a few men left that like to carry on traditions. I myself am a woodcarver and hope I can pass it down someday. Congrats to you and go with God
although he may never become a millionaire, his craft and workmanship will remain priceless. beautiful work that shows you don't need a whole lot in order to have a fulfilling life. oh, and who are the 37 morons who "thumbs downed" this amazing video? some people's children........
I’ve reached the point of my life that With all the problems and disappointments, I envy your lifestyle. I live in a concrete jungle and I look forward to the solitude of a wood shop. Thanks for sharing.
I ordered and received a walnut dough bowl from J.P. Madren, and I have to say that it is absolutely beautiful! It feels silky to the touch, and I can hardly wait to make my first loaves of bread in my new dough bowl. Thank you, Mr. Madren!
i just came across this video , and i was so excited to find this , i have been looking for a dough bowl for sometime now , can you please tell me how much yours was and is he still selling them, thank you .
What a wonderful story that is! So glad i found this video👍 I would gladly pay more for his bowl than the exact duplicate made in a machine shop by someone whose name i couldn't pronounce.
It's a very time consuming process that doesn't allow your mind to stray too far from what you're doing. I'm a klutz to begin with (probably more so than most) so when my mind does stray I tend to bleed. (Lol)
I have just come across your channel sir wow your so talented an what a collection of dough bowls you have it's just a shame I live in England or I would be asking to buy one from you .such true talent sir .
One TarHeel to another ... I too get relief, alone in my workshop! Our own hands, creating something ... that’s the best medicine available right there!
Afternoon Bill. My show building is in Wentworth NC, or www.doughbowlmaker.com The show building is open by appointment only. I don’t want folks just showing up because I’m retired from my “Day job” and folks just showing up would be disappointed when I wasn’t here.
Too many folks just "exist" ... Life is for living. My choices are hard on the old body but such a reward to have so many folks loving what I do. Working on bowl 2300+ today
JP, I have great respect for you and have learned a lot from this video. Enough to give this a try! Can you tell me a little about your tools and what I need to start. Do you use green wood or dry and what wood do you use? Thank you for any info.
All are made with green wood as you'd bust the bowl (and your shoulder) trying to chop dry wood. All tools are custom made (my blacksmith died several years ago so his style. Is gone) but tools that will work can be obtained at www.jasonlonon.com I have a "how they're made" page that gives step by step instructions at www.doughbowlmaker.com
Very nice, I think we may be related, same way of carving and the way we let time take care of itself while we're carving away on a project. When I get a chisel in one hand and mallet in the other, and start in, time seems to slow way down on the inside, while the hours fly by on the outside. Oh, and we have some pretty nice Trout water here in southeastern Minnesota, come on up and be my guest !
Love the story, the heart & soul into these bowls. Does anyone have his contact details? I’d love to have a few bowls for myself and some family members.
Wood is totally green...cant chop dry wood. It will bust the bowl and your shoulder! Drying it without cracking is as complicated as making the bowl but I do well there also. Got to dry them s l o w ...but without allowing to have a mold issue. Never a dull moment!
Sir, My wife is from Greensboro NC and has always wanted one of the NC dough bowls like her grandmother had! It seems that it was promised to her but another cousin got it before my mother n law could go get it for the wife. I will contact you through your site. Thank you
