  • Love is in the air at the Commerce City bald eagle nest off 112th Avenue. Both eagle species nest earlier in Colorado than smaller raptors, with the exception of the great-horned owl.
    In this sequence, it's pretty easy to see the difference between the male and the female bald eagle. Males in the lower 48 states range from seven to nine pounds, while females weigh approximately ten to thirteen pounds. Of course there is some overlap in size as well. Take a look at the toes and talons of Dad eagle as he sits on the branch next to Mom...he seems to have been playing in the mud! He's probably been catching fish and waterfowl, meaning he is an excellent provider. He may have as many as five mouths to feed by the end of March, including his own!
