I live in England and have epilepsy which means all of my prescriptions for anything are free and I get free bus travel because I'm not allowed to drive. I got an air ambulance to an ICU and when I was released they paid for my taxi home. It cost me nothing and they saved my life. Twice.
The one lesson in life my mam taught me was "Nothing in life is Free" there is a cost to everything if you don't pay someone else has to !! If you say fresh air is free, even the air we breath can & will damage your health as we are finding out with global pandemic Covit 19 😁😁😁 stay safe

A small portion of my wage was paid as National Insurance. towards my state pension which I am now enjoying, but also to ensure the several times in my live when the NHS came to my assistance _ at no cost at the point of need! I would never live outside the UK and our NHS.

I know someone who's dad came over from abroad,stayed 6 months & during that time had heart surgery then buggered off back home again without paying a penny! This sort of thing is destroying the NHS which the British people have paid into & lucky to have!
I may have said this before but I will say it again, God Bless the NHS, especially at the moment. The UK may not be perfect but the health service is it at it's best. Also we do do pubs well too. :-)
I don't understand how you think the NHS is at its best at the moment. It's had to endure 10 years of Tory cuts which doctors and nurses have been fighting against. It is also drastically understaffed because of the Brexit fiasco. We once had a great health service thanks to socialism but it has been beaten down by years of right wing governments.

Yes too many of the Eurofanatics hate the UK and can see nothing good about it. It's true that the UK has fallen behind the rest of Europe in things such as maternity leave and pay but there are still some good things. The food is much better than it was years ago. I voted Remain but I am not a Eurofanatic who wants the UK not only to rejoin the EU but also the Eurozone and the Shengen zone. I think I will call them Euromilitants in future not Eurofanatics as that's what they are. They have become very aggressive and angry in recent years.

Actually though, the main point with the US/UK comparison for me, and why Nye Bevan's quote is particularly noteworthy, is that I often find it extraordinary how large parts of the country (not all or everyone in the US of course) are on the one hand deeply Christian, at least outwardly, yet on the other hand would quite happily see a stranger drop dead in the street if they didn't have the appropriate health insurance (I recall some extraordinary views on the matter re: Obamacare). There always seems to be a level of hypocrisy to it all...but I digress. Also, the problem of healthcare in the US is the cost of treatment, to borrow part of your quote, in the US everyone runs out of their own money...that's the issue with their system...medical care is usually appallingly expensive even WITH insurance. Anything medical related, even with animals, is outrageously overpriced...I recently had a friend that had to pay medical bills of almost $10,000 for an operation on their cat!...and then they had to have it put down afterwards anyway. The NHS is the UKs crowning achievement in my opinion. Not everyone will agree, but they'd soon miss it if it ceased to be. It's not perfect, but the reasons you mentioned makes it pretty close. Its saved both my parents lives, mine too. It needs to be protected at all costs and to not be used as a political weapon. It's going to be pushed to its absolute limits in the coming months. Hopefully it will teach people to use it more responsibly in the future and keep it going for generations to come.

28 days (vacation) is the minimum. Most companies then add 10 days paid public holidays too to take us to 38 days. I have also heard that in many US companies the employees are told when to take their vacation time or have to take it in blocks. In the UK we can take it when we like, even single days.
In my last job I had to work all bank holidays other than Christmas Day as it was a call centre but we didn't get time off in lieu. My annual leave was building up not because I didn't want to take it but because we were so busy I couldn't be spared. Some of it was carried over to the following year. I badly wanted the time off We also didn't get paid sick leave and I was sick a lot with migraines from not having these bank holidays and taking annual leave when I wanted to.
The NHS is the thing that I miss the most about the UK (I'm a Brit in the US). The NHS gave one grandfather over a decade of extra, quality, life. It gave my other grandfather excellent care during his terminal illness. It diagnosed and manages excellently well my wife's *EXTREMELY* rare neuro/auto immune condition. When I needed my GP, I was able to get same day appointments every week for 6 weeks. Yes, as you say it has issues, but every time I/my family has needed it, it's been there for me/us. Any news on your visa yet? Hopefully you're back home nice and soon :)
The sad thing is that the one big issue at the root of most of the others is 'austerity' measures suppressing its funding. (And that's on top of the fact that even at the best of times the government tends to ignore the amount that the NHS say they need to run properly.)

@me Me Nah it's just more convenient with the NHS. We pay for it with our taxes and we get whatever healthcare we need out of it. It's better than the US. In the US you have to save money just in case you do end up in the hospital one day. But even then there's no guarantee that you're going to have saved enough money. On top of that, while the money you are saving up for a rainy day is sitting in the bank, the US govt will take more and more money off of you from interest tax anyway. So sure we depend on our government, but at least we aren't getting used by it.

As a Englishman with American family, as a kid I grew up always wanting to live in the US but as a grown up I'd never contemplate it now. Like you say culture, history, health service and definitely pubs make it great to live here! Thanks for the reminder of how lucky we are in the UK. A couple of years back I got through the entire year without using my full 28 days, I had in fact only used 8 and there was only like 3 months left until they were due to reset so my manager had to sit me down and he was like "look, HR have said you HAVE to take your days off", so I got a full 5 weeks off work in one go. Bloody loved it. The US system is crazy, people need time off work to rest so they can work more efficiently. Also love how you're only gone like a day and already forgot what the NHS stands for.
I work as an early morning cleaner at a local College. I changed from 'full time' (standard 28 days holiday) to 'term-time only' (don't work during school holidays). Best thing I've ever done.
@@davidmckie7128 It does, 44 weeks wages are spread out over 52 weeks, I am in the fortunate position that this does not greatly affect me. I _could_ ask for overtime to help with deep cleans during the holidays if I needed the money.

I lived in Liverpool in the 1960s and when I was there they demolished a lot of terraced houses with a view to replacing them with nicer council houses. However, they left all of the pubs standing. This meant that for a few years the only buildings in my area of Liverpool were pubs. If you looked across the flat cleared landscape all that you could see was a pub on every street corner.
So I’ve been watching your posts for about a year and I just have to say how much I enjoy them. You’re funny, awkward, self-deprecating and smart! As a Californian (and ex-New Yorker), I find your comments spot on. The US health care system sucks. Nothing else to say...it's just shit. No, the US doesn't have pubs, and that unfortunate. It's damn difficult to get a simple pint of Guiness draft, and obtaing a draft ESB is virtually impossible! Yes, the US vacation and holiday time off from work situtation compared to the civilized world is bizarre. Americans tend towards workaholism, and this helps explain why our economy is so productive. I think American corporations take advantage of worker attitudes, and since workers rarely demand more than 10 days minimum, the issue is never seriously discussed. American workers often dislike unions, their only real chance to obtain improved workplace conditions--go figure. UK history is, of course, incomparable. I'd love to regularly drink a pint in a 500 year old building!! Yours are valid and interesting observations Alanna. In a word, the US has much to offer but it isn't in the five areas you've discussed. In California, for example, today it's 77 degrees with less than 20% humidity. I'd also add that from my driveway I can be in San Francisco in 90 minutes, Monterey Bay in 2.5 hours, Yosemites 2.5 hours, the snow in 1 hour, a ski resort in 2 hours, Reno 3.5 hours, and Hawaii 5 hours by jet for under $350 from an airport 1 hour away. If all things were equal--they're not of course--and, after spending my life in the US (but traveling and working in 28 countries), I would have loved to move to UK or anywhere in Europe (but not a UK apart of the EU). As great as Canada and Canadians are my lovely friend I wouldn't move to Canada because its just too dang cold for me. I grew up in cold, and I don't miss it. Living in UK these days has little appeal because I'd no longer have free and easy access to Amsterdam, Denmark, the Pyrenees, Greece, or northern Italy. I understand why Brits elected to pulled out of the EU, and I hope they don't suffer from what to me seemed like a shortsighted action. Let me conclude that after California, UK is my favorite place to be. If it wasn't so distant, I'd it visit more often. As for Florida.... I'm happy its 3,000 miles away. It's weather sucks, hurricanes are much to common, the regressive state government sucks, and its occupied by far too many crazy ex-New Yorkers (my father was once one of them). Still, it's a very nice place to vacation (but far from Disney World--I'm sold on Disneyland Anaheim). I like the Tampa area but they Keys aslo a favorite, and I know a great Italian restaurant just north of the Fort Lauderdale Airport! I hope you get your tan without burning yourself, but even with pasty white skin you remain are always lovely.
Do you think post Brexit there will be no access to other European countries to visit and tour and holiday? Really? We were doing this way before the EU or EEC even came into existence! People from the UK worked in european countries and all over the world and I dont imagine much will change except paperwork. I cant imagine any complicated paperwork for short visits. Do you really think the rest of Europe will make it hard for people to go and spend holiday money in their country? As an American, could you even apply for a pan European work visa before the UK left the EU, travel in Schengen without checks on your non EU passport?

I'm a British man who pays national health for everyone...I would never change it...ive never needed it to the extreme...However ive had fsmily members who have they are incredible...and the best in the world...a world first...everyone deserves health care ❤
@Psalm 27:2 Compared to the rest of the world, yes. If you have to pay through the nose just for basic services then why call it a health 'service'. It's more like a health scam. It's actually cheaper in many cases to get on a plane and get health service in another country than it is to get it in the US, and quite often the quality of care is the same (even better).
I spent over four years in the US and their health care "service' is a form of extortion that'd make the Cosa Nostra blush. The costs are insane, in the worst cases resulting in bankruptcy, or at the very least severe debt. It's total social Darwinism - a society where it's purely a survival of the fittest and fuck the rest - and has nothing to do with vague notions of "freedom" Americans are always banging on about, and certainly nothing to do with patriotism. If you regard patients as "customers" and health care as a "commodity", America's the place for you. If you want a humane system that truly looks after its citizens, live in Britain. (Same story with unemployment benefit, labour laws, paid leave from employment, and many other issues.)

While touring the States in the '70s, one of the high points was finding a traditional 'style' pub selling apparently genuine Whitbread draught bitter. That tasted sooo good after weeks of driving with car and tent. It was next to London bridge at Lake Havasu. I wonder if it's still there.
In the spirit of acknowledging wonderful things about other countries, here is what I loved about the USA as a Brit. (Not yet been to Canada, so cant comment!). 1) In one nation, seeing and experiencing such a fantastic cultural and geographic mix, yet all united as American. New York, Florida, Las Vegas, Tahoe, San Francisco and everything in between on the drive felt distinct but united. 2) Sheer exquisite beauty of the landscape. Bayou to mountain to forest to desert. Acres of sky with star visibility like I have never witnessed in my life before. 3) NASA and NASCAR!!!!! Meeting huskies and a medal winning competitor in the Alaska races. I couldn't help it, loved Disney and Universal parks with my children. Even choked up a bit listening to When You Wish Upon A Star...wasnt expecting that! Yosemite, climbing the waterfall, stunning. Flying over the Grand Canyon and sitting on the edge to eat my lunch. Sunset desert horseride. The ride on the Stratosphere tower. Dinner Theatre in Orlando...fun. Playing slots in Vegas. Air boat in the everglades watching alligators. Great skiing resorts. Alcatraz. Ellis Island. Climbing Statue of Liberty and standing on top of the Empire State building. The New York Stock Exchange. Such an incredibly diverse amount yo see and do. Theres too much more to say than fits here! 4) Architecture. New York and San Francisco and Las Vegas. Could not be more different, enjoyed it all! 5) Great food and accommodation at decent prices...cheap fuel! 6) Certainly not least...best for last. We met some really great people. Interesting, good humoured and very hospitable. Hope to be back one day :)
Alanna, this video made me realise how much we all miss you back here in the UK. When you get back, you should travel up to Colchester in Essex, if you love our history. It's the oldest recorded town in the uk and still had some roman walls, a chariot race track, and a fab castle. Will be happy you show you around.
The healthcare system here in the USA is so bad that 87 million people are uninsured or underinsured, 500,000 people go bankrupt every year due to medical bills, and up to 68,000 people die every year due to lack of adequate healthcare. Fortunately, there is more momentum than ever to finally get universal healthcare in this country. Alanna, you are correct to be thankful for the NHS!
Healthcare, 28 days paid holiday, statutory sick pay, statutory entitlement to maternity leave & maternity pay, gun laws, capped university tuition fees (or free if you are in Scotland), no statute of limitations on criminal offences beyond summary offences (traffic convictions and the like)

I am from the US and I’ve always DREAMED of going to the UK and it’s still my number 1 want on my bucket list. And the reason is so that I can go and sit in a building that has been around hundreds of years and just listen. Listen to the walls telling me stories and memories and patrons long past. Just being around history is what love is all about.
As you like history,I hope you went to Lavenham, during your time in the UK, its a medieval town, that still has its wooden buildings, well worth a look.

FaithPixel Americans are a lot more patriotic than the English and I’ve seen them blow their tops way more often. The fact that you didn't mention that the cost of living varies dramatically depending on where in the UK you live or that the cost of healthcare depending on what you need in the US could set you back thousands of dollars suggests you didn't put a whole lot of thought into your argument 🤣
The whole tax burden thing is often misquoted, with Americans thinking they a lot pay less than U.K. But in fact it’s very similar. But it’s a bit complicated with income tax, sales tax and property tax etc. But these are the numbers from the Guardian Newspaper:- Person on £25k in U.K. will have total burden of 18.9%. In USA 20.3% Person on £40k in U.K. will have total burden of 24.8%. In USA 24.3% Person on £100k in U.K. will have total burden of 34.3%. In USA 34.2%.

The only reason I can figure why the US (and I guess in Canada) does this is that different States (or Provinces) have different tax rates and so you can compare the price of an item across States but I can't see why the tag doesn't include a before and after tax price on it.
I lived in Florida for a few years as a teenager. The differences are crazy! Overall I'm much happier back in the UK, although I do miss some things. Mainly all that deep fried gorgeous 'heart attack' restaurant food 🤤, but also air conditioning (although that's only a problem 1-2 weeks a year in England!)
Peter Woods, Torre Chianca some do, some don't. Mostly depends on the party. It isn't a bad thing in my opinion, the founding fathers wrote the constitution with Christianity in mind and it's the basis for how great our country is. It might be surprising, but it ain't a bad thing.
I can't imagine a front bench politician in the UK stating something like "with the lords help and wisdom we will get through this" or some shit like that. It wouldn't be bad. It would just be very weird and I don't think people would be too comfortable with it. I know I wouldn't be...and whoever said it would likely lose my vote.
I'm an American and have lived in the UK for just over eight years. Pubs - I'll add to that. Some can have the most hilarious names! Bonus, you never forget them. Most smokers just go outside. :) I LOVE not having to figure out sales tax. I fully support the NHS - we even donated during the pandemic. The company my husband works for used their 3D printers and donated face sheilds to healthcare workers. A lot of people ask if I'll move back to the US. Not a chance. My husband is British and retires in a few years. And, although we could save a lot of money on the cost of living in the US, it would be eaten up, and then some to pay for private health insurance. And gods forbid we truly got sick. We'd go bankrupt. We have 6 weeks of paid vacation per-anum, and several paid holidays. I've never counted.
I've been to neither the UK, the US, or Canada, but I certainly agree with number 3. A country where centuries of history, millennia even, can be found under a 2 inch layer of dirt in a field is astonishing to me. I've only lived in such young countries, where something that happened 80 years earlier is painted like it's ancient history. But it's really not, it's living memory! I wish there were thousand year old castles in the middle of my local park like there is in Britain.

Provided the earth isn't used outside the house (which is unfortunately happening a lot in the UK because people don't realise the risks) everyone is safe. We put a lot of work into electrical safety we have the safest system in the world.
Whilst on holiday some years back , I had an infection in one eye. It went downhill in a day with pain in eye and not able to see. I went to the capital city to get treated. I asked how much it will cost. The doctor didn't do costing and made a rough guess of X. I converted it to pounds and wow £20,000. The thought of the insurance not paying (because you mislaid one receipt for example) didn't help either. Cut to the chase I spent 4 days in hospital then when stable enough, we got on plane back to the UK and I went straight into the hospital. I was treated there and then. Over the course of two years through the outpatient unit I eventually slowly got my sight back in my infected eye - not perfect but still better than no sight. I'm trying to say I was very worried about the insurance making excuses not to pay and I'll end up £20k for treatment that is no guarantee that it will restore my sight. As for the NHS, I paid zero. Zit. Not a problem if you are unemployed. I just pay for the eye drops and that's bags and bags of them during the first year. The cost was £12 a month (for any prescription/quantity). This is the same for European and most developed countries. The other thing we don't have guns in the UK (except shotgun and rifles and they're not automatic. You need to have a good reason for having them)

Apart from our justice system🤣.. I know we even do that better in some ways but here no matter what crime you have committed you will only ever serve half of what you've been sentenced with.. in America you will do your entire sentence although they still get parole hearings they stick to their word in America.. if you murder in the US you will do a life sentence but here in the UK they will tell you that you've been sentenced to life but you will on do half of that... 10 years becomes 5 years, 6 months becomes 3 months and so forth
Not all drugs are cheaper with a prescription in the UK. Once I had toothache and went to the dentist and I needed penicillin to get rid of the infection before he could fill the tooth. At the time the prescription charge was about £6. At the time I was in a bad financial position so I told the dentist that after paying the bill for his treatment (on the NHS) I could not afford the prescription charge. He wrote me a private prescription instead of an NHS one, so I had to pay only the retail price for the penicillin course. That was just £1.50.
Since you like cider, that's reminded me of a ciderhouse on a canal going out of Lincoln that served these absolutely gigantic Cumberland sausages... My family used to weekend on the canals, we'd just moor up at the ciderhouse for lunch, you'd have the pub garden (as you like) and it's be a warm sunny day in spring, or summer, with dozens of ciders to try, swans and ducks milling around on the water, lots friendly people - idyllic.

I live in England and have epilepsy which means all of my prescriptions for anything are free and I get free bus travel because I'm not allowed to drive. I got an air ambulance to an ICU and when I was released they paid for my taxi home. It cost me nothing and they saved my life. Twice.

I don't understand how you think the NHS is at its best at the moment. It's had to endure 10 years of Tory cuts which doctors and nurses have been fighting against. It is also drastically understaffed because of the Brexit fiasco. We once had a great health service thanks to socialism but it has been beaten down by years of right wing governments.

It's true that the UK has fallen behind the rest of Europe in things such as maternity leave and pay but there are still some good things. The food is much better than it was years ago. I voted Remain but I am not a Eurofanatic who wants the UK not only to rejoin the EU but also the Eurozone and the Shengen zone. The NHS is the UKs crowning achievement in my opinion. Not everyone will agree, but they'd soon miss it if it ceased to be. It's not perfect, but the reasons you mentioned makes it pretty close. Its saved both my parents lives, mine too. It needs to be protected at all costs and to not be used as a political weapon. It's going to be pushed to its absolute limits in the coming months. Hopefully it will teach people to use it more responsibly in the future and keep it going for generations to come.

I'm british, going to America on holiday for a few days! (Florida) I am actually really excited. FIrst time going abroad.
28 days (vacation) is the minimum. Most companies then add 10 days paid public holidays too to take us to 38 days.
I have also heard that in many US companies the employees are told when to take their vacation time or have to take it in blocks. In the UK we can take it when we like, even single days.
Most places in the UK actually give holiday/vacation paid for 6 weeks including BH's, not 28 days. My last job was crap, but 6 weeks paid holiday...
In my last job I had to work all bank holidays other than Christmas Day as it was a call centre but we didn't get time off in lieu. My annual leave was building up not because I didn't want to take it but because we were so busy I couldn't be spared. Some of it was carried over to the following year. I badly wanted the time off We also didn't get paid sick leave and I was sick a lot with migraines from not having these bank holidays and taking annual leave when I wanted to.

The NHS is the thing that I miss the most about the UK (I'm a Brit in the US).
The NHS gave one grandfather over a decade of extra, quality, life. It gave my other grandfather excellent care during his terminal illness. It diagnosed and manages excellently well my wife's *EXTREMELY* rare neuro/auto immune condition. When I needed my GP, I was able to get same day appointments every week for 6 weeks. Yes, as you say it has issues, but every time I/my family has needed it, it's been there for me/us.

The sad thing is that the one big issue at the root of most of the others is 'austerity' measures suppressing its funding. (And that's on top of the fact that even at the best of times the government tends to ignore the amount that the NHS say they need to run properly.)

We pay for it with our taxes and we get whatever healthcare we need out of it.
It's better than the US. In the US you have to save money just in case you do end up in the hospital one day. But even then there's no guarantee that you're going to have saved enough money. On top of that, while the money you are saving up for a rainy day is sitting in the bank, the US govt will take more and more money off of you from interest tax anyway.
So sure we depend on our government, but at least we aren't getting used by it.

A couple of years back I got through the entire year without using my full 28 days, I had in fact only used 8 and there was only like 3 months left until they were due to reset so my manager had to sit me down and he was like "look, HR have said you HAVE to take your days off", so I got a full 5 weeks off work in one go. Bloody loved it. The US system is crazy, people need time off work to rest so they can work more efficiently.

I work as an early morning cleaner at a local College. I changed from 'full time' (standard 28 days holiday) to 'term-time only' (don't work during school holidays). Best thing I've ever done.

I lived in Liverpool in the 1960s and when I was there they demolished a lot of terraced houses with a view to replacing them with nicer council houses. However, they left all of the pubs standing. This meant that for a few years the only buildings in my area of Liverpool were pubs. If you looked across the flat cleared landscape all that you could see was a pub on every street corner.

As a Californian (and ex-New Yorker), I find your comments spot on. The US health care system sucks. Nothing else to say...it's just shit. No, the US doesn't have pubs, and that unfortunate. It's damn difficult to get a simple pint of Guiness draft, and obtaing a draft ESB is virtually impossible! Yes, the US vacation and holiday time off from work situtation compared to the civilized world is bizarre. Americans tend towards workaholism, and this helps explain why our economy is so productive. I think American corporations take advantage of worker attitudes, and since workers rarely demand more than 10 days minimum, the issue is never seriously discussed. American workers often dislike unions, their only real chance to obtain improved workplace conditions--go figure. UK history is, of course, incomparable. I'd love to regularly drink a pint in a 500 year old building!! Yours are valid and interesting observations Alanna. In a word, the US has much to offer but it isn't in the five areas you've discussed.
In California, for example, today it's 77 degrees with less than 20% humidity. I'd also add that from my driveway I can be in San Francisco in 90 minutes, Monterey Bay in 2.5 hours, Yosemites 2.5 hours, the snow in 1 hour, a ski resort in 2 hours, Reno 3.5 hours, and Hawaii 5 hours by jet for under $350 from an airport 1 hour away. If all things were equal--they're not of course--and, after spending my life in the US (but traveling and working in 28 countries), I would have loved to move to UK or anywhere in Europe (but not a UK apart of the EU). As great as Canada and Canadians are my lovely friend I wouldn't move to Canada because its just too dang cold for me. I grew up in cold, and I don't miss it. Living in UK these days has little appeal because I'd no longer have free and easy access to Amsterdam, Denmark, the Pyrenees, Greece, or northern Italy. I understand why Brits elected to pulled out of the EU, and I hope they don't suffer from what to me seemed like a shortsighted action. Let me conclude that after California, UK is my favorite place to be. If it wasn't so distant, I'd it visit more often. As for Florida.... I'm happy its 3,000 miles away. It's weather sucks, hurricanes are much to common, the regressive state government sucks, and its occupied by far too many crazy ex-New Yorkers (my father was once one of them). Still, it's a very nice place to vacation (but far from Disney World--I'm sold on Disneyland Anaheim). I like the Tampa area but they Keys aslo a favorite, and I know a great Italian restaurant just north of the Fort Lauderdale Airport! I hope you get your tan without burning yourself, but even with pasty white skin you remain are always lovely.
Do you think post Brexit there will be no access to other European countries to visit and tour and holiday? Really? We were doing this way before the EU or EEC even came into existence! People from the UK worked in european countries and all over the world and I dont imagine much will change except paperwork. I cant imagine any complicated paperwork for short visits. Do you really think the rest of Europe will make it hard for people to go and spend holiday money in their country? It's actually cheaper in many cases to get on a plane and get health service in another country than it is to get it in the US, and quite often the quality of care is the same (even better).
I spent over four years in the US and their health care "service' is a form of extortion that'd make the Cosa Nostra blush. The costs are insane, in the worst cases resulting in bankruptcy, or at the very least severe debt. It's total social Darwinism - a society where it's purely a survival of the fittest and fuck the rest - and has nothing to do with vague notions of "freedom" Americans are always banging on about, and certainly nothing to do with patriotism. If you regard patients as "customers" and health care as a "commodity", America's the place for you. If you want a humane system that truly looks after its citizens, live in Britain. (Same story with unemployment benefit, labour laws, paid leave from employment, and many other issues.)

While touring the States in the '70s, one of the high points was finding a traditional 'style' pub selling apparently genuine Whitbread draught bitter. That tasted sooo good after weeks of driving with car and tent. It was next to London bridge at Lake Havasu. I wonder if it's still there.

In the spirit of acknowledging wonderful things about other countries, here is what I loved about the USA as a Brit. (Not yet been to Canada, so cant comment!).
1) In one nation, seeing and experiencing such a fantastic cultural and geographic mix, yet all united as American. New York, Florida, Las Vegas, Tahoe, San Francisco and everything in between on the drive felt distinct but united.
2) Sheer exquisite beauty of the landscape. Bayou to mountain to forest to desert. Acres of sky with star visibility like I have never witnessed in my life before.
3) NASA and NASCAR!!!!! Meeting huskies and a medal winning competitor in the Alaska races. I couldn't help it, loved Disney and Universal parks with my children. Even choked up a bit listening to When You Wish Upon A Star...wasnt expecting that! Yosemite, climbing the waterfall, stunning. Flying over the Grand Canyon and sitting on the edge to eat my lunch. Sunset desert horseride. The ride on the Stratosphere tower. Dinner Theatre in Orlando...fun. Playing slots in Vegas. Air boat in the everglades watching alligators. Great skiing resorts. Alcatraz. Ellis Island. Climbing Statue of Liberty and standing on top of the Empire State building. The New York Stock Exchange. Such an incredibly diverse amount yo see and do. Theres too much more to say than fits here!
4) Architecture. New York and San Francisco and Las Vegas. Could not be more different, enjoyed it all!
5) Great food and accommodation at decent prices...cheap fuel!
6) Certainly not least...best for last. We met some really great people. Interesting, good humoured and very hospitable. Hope to be back one day :)
Alanna, this video made me realise how much we all miss you back here in the UK. When you get back, you should travel up to Colchester in Essex, if you love our history. It's the oldest recorded town in the uk and still had some roman walls, a chariot race track, and a fab castle. Will be happy you show you around.
The healthcare system here in the USA is so bad that 87 million people are uninsured or underinsured, 500,000 people go bankrupt every year due to medical bills, and up to 68,000 people die every year due to lack of adequate healthcare. Fortunately, there is more momentum than ever to finally get universal healthcare in this country. Alanna, you are correct to be thankful for the NHS!

I am from the US and I’ve always DREAMED of going to the UK and it’s still my number 1 want on my bucket list. And the reason is so that I can go and sit in a building that has been around hundreds of years and just listen. Listen to the walls telling me stories and memories and patrons long past. Just being around history is what love is all about.

FaithPixel Americans are a lot more patriotic than the English and I’ve seen them blow their tops way more often. The fact that you didn't mention that the cost of living varies dramatically depending on where in the UK you live or that the cost of healthcare depending on what you need in the US could set you back thousands of dollars suggests you didn't put a whole lot of thought into your argument 🤣

The whole tax burden thing is often misquoted, with Americans thinking they a lot pay less than U.K. But in fact it’s very similar. But it’s a bit complicated with income tax, sales tax and property tax etc. But these are the numbers from the Guardian Newspaper:-
Person on £25k in U.K. will have total burden of 18.9%. In USA 20.3%
Person on £40k in U.K. will have total burden of 24.8%. In USA 24.3%
Person on £100k in U.K. will have total burden of 34.3%. In USA 34.2%.

The only reason I can figure why the US (and I guess in Canada) does this is that different States (or Provinces) have different tax rates and so you can compare the price of an item across States but I can't see why the tag doesn't include a before and after tax price on it.
I lived in Florida for a few years as a teenager. The differences are crazy! Overall I'm much happier back in the UK, although I do miss some things. Mainly all that deep fried gorgeous 'heart attack' restaurant food 🤤, but also air conditioning (although that's only a problem 1-2 weeks a year in England!)

Pubs - I'll add to that. Some can have the most hilarious names! Bonus, you never forget them. Most smokers just go outside. :)
I LOVE not having to figure out sales tax.
I fully support the NHS - we even donated during the pandemic. The company my husband works for used their 3D printers and donated face sheilds to healthcare workers. A lot of people ask if I'll move back to the US. Not a chance. My husband is British and retires in a few years. And, although we could save a lot of money on the cost of living in the US, it would be eaten up, and then some to pay for private health insurance. And gods forbid we truly got sick. We'd go bankrupt.
We have 6 weeks of paid vacation per-anum, and several paid holidays. I've never counted.

I've been to neither the UK, the US, or Canada, but I certainly agree with number 3. A country where centuries of history, millennia even, can be found under a 2 inch layer of dirt in a field is astonishing to me. I've only lived in such young countries, where something that happened 80 years earlier is painted like it's ancient history. But it's really not, it's living memory! I wish there were thousand year old castles in the middle of my local park like there is in Britain.

Whilst on holiday some years back , I had an infection in one eye. It went downhill in a day with pain in eye and not able to see. I went to the capital city to get treated. I asked how much it will cost. The doctor didn't do costing and made a rough guess of X. I converted it to pounds and wow £20,000. The thought of the insurance not paying (because you mislaid one receipt for example) didn't help either.
Cut to the chase I spent 4 days in hospital then when stable enough, we got on plane back to the UK and I went straight into the hospital. I was treated there and then. Over the course of two years through the outpatient unit I eventually slowly got my sight back in my infected eye - not perfect but still better than no sight.
I'm trying to say I was very worried about the insurance making excuses not to pay and I'll end up £20k for treatment that is no guarantee that it will restore my sight.
As for the NHS, I paid zero. Zit. Not a problem if you are unemployed. I just pay for the eye drops and that's bags and bags of them during the first year. The cost was £12 a month (for any prescription/quantity). This is the same for European and most developed countries.
The other thing we don't have guns in the UK (except shotgun and rifles and they're not automatic. You need to have a good reason for having them)

Apart from our justice system🤣.. I know we even do that better in some ways but here no matter what crime you have committed you will only ever serve half of what you've been sentenced with.. in America you will do your entire sentence although they still get parole hearings they stick to their word in America.. if you murder in the US you will do a life sentence but here in the UK they will tell you that you've been sentenced to life but you will on do half of that... 10 years becomes 5 years, 6 months becomes 3 months and so forth
Not all drugs are cheaper with a prescription in the UK. Once I had toothache and went to the dentist and I needed penicillin to get rid of the infection before he could fill the tooth. At the time the prescription charge was about £6. At the time I was in a bad financial position so I told the dentist that after paying the bill for his treatment (on the NHS) I could not afford the prescription charge. He wrote me a private prescription instead of an NHS one, so I had to pay only the retail price for the penicillin course. That was just £1.50.

@@joehardy9610 Well we have guns, they just aren't as common and require a reason to own (self defence doesn't count).
Since you like cider, that's reminded me of a ciderhouse on a canal going out of Lincoln that served these absolutely gigantic Cumberland sausages... My family used to weekend on the canals, we'd just moor up at the ciderhouse for lunch, you'd have the pub garden (as you like) and it's be a warm sunny day in spring, or summer, with dozens of ciders to try, swans and ducks milling around on the water, lots friendly people - idyllic.
