Being paid $7000 for a house back then (eminent domain) would be about only $63,000 today, but taking into account real estate inflation in California, the equivalent buying power would be around maybe a $300,000 home today, which does not buy much until you get out of the metro area. But it was hardly the end of the world financially, even though eminent domain is never a nice thing for those involved, for reasons besides finances.
