I just added a Gt40 tubular intake too my 90 5.0 and it runs great driving down the road but when stopping the idle will drop low enough to kill the motor sometimes or idle jumps and before the intake swap it was perfect. What do I need to check and how to fix the idle drop issue. Will this help me possibly what your doing in the video? Thx

Got a 91 lx vert recently, drove her back home 2.5 hrs no problem, idle started surging a tiny bit maybe 250rpm fluctuations, drove for a few days and suddenly got a 2k rpm idle, tested IAC and TPS all was good, but didn’t remove IAC to see if I could blow air through it, removed IAC and could blow air through easily, replaced IAC and idle went back down to an 850-1000rpm surge, she would start and idle great until I hit the gas then start surging, decided I’d just replace the TPS and do another base idle reset, perfect and steady idle!!! I’d like to note that the breather port on the valve cover was plugged with a cap as well as the one on throttle body, I installed a hose between the two and noticed my gas pedal is no longer stiff from off idle. I’m guessing the TB vacuum was holding it closed just just enough to where I couldn’t ease on the pedal, helped a huge amount with 1st/2nd gear slow speed control and bucking. Thanks to you I had a great platform of knowledge to work from, and with that my car is running absolutely beautiful now.✌🏼
Question so I can start my car with out that plug in it. I get my tps to about .96. Then I plug that thing back in and let it run. When I go to check the final tps it’s 1.111 ish. Do I adjust the tps or ideal? To bring it back down?
Your videos are great and easy to understand.thnks for that.i do step by step what are u doing but my question is when i unplug the iac valve the enigine check light appears.does it make any diffrence in reset procedure?becouse it didnt went out until moving the car? thnks for nice videos again.
just got doing this to my beater, cleaned it up a bit but still need to tweak it.. unknown cam set up with bbk junk t-body and a stripped allen set screw way out of adjustment tps over 1.4. lucky I had a accufab in the garage.
that would take too long.... no idea who built this, and its staying a beater so only getting used parts thrown a it. has an eagle 347 kit and all the bolt on crap, decent upr suspension, cobra 5 lug swap, all the bells and whistles except they used e7 heads on it and the body is ruff. has some decent parts on it but damn its like they threw darts at the summit catalog total mismatch.. will be a good donor car if I can find another decent coupe.
question for you: Car is having a hard time starting. It turns over and will sometimes crank but not all the time. I have done the trick of priming the fuel pump, turn almost to crank three or four times then crank, it does not seem to help. Car runs great when it cranks. What do you and your community think: Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter, some kind of electrical issue...???
How ya been man. I have Missed a lot of videos. Been crazy here, my wife has been in and out of the hospital a lot. I bought a 94 GT , drove it home and need to watch the missed Videos.
I had a question for you. So i messed with my tps sensor awhile back will that make my fox overheat if i didnt adjust it properly.? Because I'm trying to chase down a overheat issue, so far i did a new radiator water pump and thermostat and I have a vacuum refiller cornwell vacuum assist cooling system refiller Which also is basically A pressure tester as well because you pull a vacuum. I'm just trying to see where you think. I need to go from here because you seem to know these the best I think
I have an 86 GT Foxbody with 5.0 HO engine. Lately when I start the car (hot or cold), the engine idles at about 3000 for about 3-5 seconds and then calms down. What could be causing this? I have checked everything, so I’m getting ready to replace my ACT, coolant temp sensor, EGR valve and both O2 sensors. BTW, the car has 396,000 miles on it.
Mine does that surge once it gets warm. Even adjusting the idle or it basically dies once I unplug the iac. Only way around it it turning the idle too high and it goes away. Iac bad? Idles nice when it’s cold and sometimes I need to pump the petal for it to start. EFi car
Your videos are great and easy to understand. Question do you think a base reset will fix my stalling at slow speeds / stops plus running rich? I changed plugs and cleaned cap and rotor so far. Old plugs were terrible. No problems with cap/rotor and still runs rough but fine under load. It is a 89 5.0 GT motor 5 speed in a 50 Ford. Pretty bad ass. A cool fox motor in a shoebox. Keep up the great channel.
@@BREW2LFOXBODY Thanks man. I put over 1K on it this past year and the stalling and misfires / running rich got worse. Forgot to mention plug wires are good and do not sense any vacuum leaks. Was thinking of changing TFI module or replacing the distributor as the pickup coil is known to fail with these symptoms. Thanks for the quick response and will start with base idle reset.
@@BREW2LFOXBODY Attempted to set the timing today after I warmed up the car. Problem was my battery is in the trunk and with my jumper cable attached to my timing gun still was not able to reach engine bay to check timing. Anyway when I removed the spout plug from the distributor after car was warmed up it would barely idle at all. I could tell that this may be one of the issues as to why it may be running too rich and the plugs I pulled looked like crap as they were very black. I can only assume that till I get a gun on it. I think the timing is set way to low and whoever worked on it before me compensated by adjusting the idle to make it run fairly well. Would mention that it idles decent when spout plug is in it but I can here it surging when warmed up. I think when I do the base idle reset that should fix the problems of it running rich / backfiring a bit. Not sure it will help with the stalling. Thanks again for your quick feedback and my filter looks clean and not plugged.
Ive been doing mine by some instructions online that didn't require unplugging the clip from the distributor. I'm gonna try your technique tomorrow. My 88 gt randomly idles super low when I come to a stop. But when I accelerate, it doesn't hesitate or anything, it just takes off without any issues. Unfortunately my tachometer doesnt work so I can't see physically what the rpms are at so I'm gonna try it by ear. Hopefully I can get it to run better tomorrow. Thanks for the video!
Just some cheap ones from Amazon. Search my channel I have a video with links to them. But I honestly can’t remover the title to the video right off hand
Hi there, i have followed every step n still cant get it right,i have a 91 Lincoln mark vii that came with the same 5.0HO motor as the Mustang,,for some reason my car never stall with aic unplugged,no matter how much i play with the throtle screw to set the idle to the lowrest car still idles around 600 rpm with iac plug disconected, any ideas? Great video by the way
My car was running pretty good until the ECU burned for some reason I replaced it with the same A9P so I went ahead double checked timing 14 degrees rpm 650 and I set the tps at .97 it feels the same only difference is when I take off is easier hard to stall now and then it feels like it has better throttle respond thanks u also had a question what did you use for your dash lights their brighter
Great video! I have a bunch of new parts to install and this will help refresh my memory when it comes time to reset everything. I should remember all this stuff, but I got hurt pretty bad in a work accident several years ago and it has left me disabled and unable to do much of anything for a number of years and that old saying "use it or lose it" sure does apply.
Robert G sorry about your accident... but seems like you are still pushing forward and enjoying life. Nothing wrong with a little refresher. Thanks as always for your support.
The exact video I’ve been looking for my B303 idle has been all over the place I’m guaranteeing this is going to fix it I’m gonna look into it soon thanks !!
Brew I have a 1990 Mustang GT and I’m having all kinds of problems start the car and it runs fine for a while then shut it down and try to restart but it won’t restart unless I depress the gas pedal to the floor. Then it runs for a while then starts to surge and will shut down. Please help
Can I just pierce the cables from the tps? No luck sticking them at the connection I get no reading, (key on and running) . Would there be a problem if I pierced them and leave a little hole on the cable?
I tried to check voltage, and all 3 wires show 5.02 volts with engine off,key on. Why is it so high? Has new sparkplugs right now. Original wires, and unsure about timing .
I'm hoping you can help.. In the process of doing the base isle reset, I can't get my tps above .68 volts. I slotted the screw holes as far as I could and still won't go over .68. Any ideas what I can do?? Thanks in advance
BREW2L, great video.....I recently swapped heads to Aluminum and added pro form 1.6 rr but the other mods below were pre-existing without this issue. When driving the car the last couple trips around the block I have noticed the rpm drops down to 500 or lower when slowing to a stop and the tranny is in neutral. If I down shift to a stop it seems to be fine. The car even shut off once but started back up easily. The car idles great after base idle reset which I perform basically just like you do here except about 8-900 RPM final setting. The car idles with/without the IAC plugged in. RFP surges a little upon start (maybe for 15 seconds or so) then levels out.Car does not have any smog or egr to speak of. Only vacuum lines are intake to FPR, intake to PCV and intake to vac tree. I don't see that any are leaking.Thank you for your input.Mods:1990 GT, gt40x heads, 1.6rr, recently added, TFS1 cam, pro flo 75mm MAF, CAI, BBK 75m TB and 19lb injectors, 1-5/8 shorty's, x pipes, bullets with dumps.
90Fox thanks for your input on the base idle reset. As you already know these things are temperamental. I have found that the 2 minute load run during the reset is about the most important part of the process. I have in the past turned the steering wheel to full lock along with all other accessories on. That way no NEW unexpected load shows up and freaks the car out. I know your issue isn't really a load problem but it might not hurt to try that along with a lower idle without the IAC plugged in. Everytime I bump the idle up to the point it runs smooth without the IAC plugged in the car seems to run worse afterwards. From my understanding the IAC needs to be the only thing correcting the idle. Thanks for watching and sharing your input.
My car idles fine with or without iac plugged in also. It keeps throwing code 54 act. I changed the sensor and it still shows it. What ohm or volt should it show when testing? Thanks
I've had all this set up how you did yours once cars gets to Temps after 25 min of driving it likes to jump to 1800 rpm and hot start only starts to the floor and has a weak idle down to 1800 any ideas?
Hey is the process the same for a 94 sn95 5.0? Im having some issues at idle and want to go through all this, but idk how much has changed between the foxbody and the sn95..appreciate your feedback
Hey BREW2L would this apply to a 94 ford Bronco with a stock 302 5.0 engine? and would I have to move my idle screw. I know for a fact that the idle screw is still set from factory it's never been moved. thanks brother for the help. GREAT VIDEO.
@@BREW2LFOXBODY just going back through the library of videos you have. Having some idle issues with my b cam. But ill get it. Also Mr. Fusiom I made works excellent.
I appreciate this video fixed my issues with surging idle. I went through everything n thought I had a vacuum leak or electrical issue. Vacuum lines where orig n the salt n paper shakers 10 pin connectors are very problematic but this was my fix thankyou. Also got rid of the 10 pin connectors n all new vac lines runs great all stock but o/r hpipe n the old bumped timing lol. #foxbody.👍👍
I had same issues and might have a vaccum leak plus mine still has all that smog junk on it, ive forgotten so much of this stuff, i remember filing the tps so i could adjust it by the screws 20 years ago but the other things i dont remember until watching these videos then it sparks the memory of working on my 86gt over 20 years ago recently got an 88 lx and mine is running like shit until warm up and raggedy then
Great video, however this seems not to fix my issue on my 86 I just bought.. it runs perfect until the engine hits about 130 degreee then starts surging badly. Cleaned the iac, theres no vacuum leaks did a smoke test,, cant figure it out for anything..any idea? Thanks
Hey man I’m hoping you can help me! First off, thank you. This really helped my cars idle as well as mine has an ecam . The issue I am having is when I turn the ac on. If I don’t idle it up some with the idle screw sometimes it will surge and die. Also, isn’t the iac supposed to increase the rpm when the ac is kicked on? My rpm’s drop when the ac is on not increased. Thought was a voltage issue. Upgraded to 130 amp sve alternator and still does it. No vacuum leaks. Thanks for any help.
Need your help please. Got a 90 lx new fox body guy. It was running then just died. Put new fuel pump , new relay under drivers seat, and new relay under the mass airflow sensor. Turn key on can’t hear fuel pump. Help help please and thank you.
Quick question, just checked my timing w/ spout connector disconnected, set it to 12° BTDC. Tightened my distributor nut then checked again, everything all good. Turned car off reconnected my spout connector turned car on waited a few min. checked timing again and it was at 16° BTDC hovering about 1k rpm. Any clue? Thanx any knowledge would help
That’s normal for the timing to be higher after you plug the spout back in. After you change the timing it’s best to do a base idle reset. Did you bump the timing up when you adjusted it? If so your probably going to have to re-set the TPS ( anywhere from .50 - .99 ) and possibly adjust the throttle stop. It’s kinda of a cat and mouse game because once you change one thing something else needs to be adjusted. (Most of the time) remember to use the black wire on the TPS as your ground and nothing else, otherwise you’ll get a false high reading. Hope this helps
BREW2L thank U so much for responding. U put my mind at ease. Gonna follow ur steps completely. Kinda hard for me to leave my home for help cause I take care of my pops. Ur the man.
Maria Alvarado I commend you for that first off! 👌 don’t sweat it brother. Take you’re time and go between TPS and throttle stop until you get it right. Also to make things a little easier on yourself, make your TPS AND THROTTLE adjustments while the car is running.
my 87 5.0 revs on its own , this happens randomly. I was told its the idle air control. should I replace this or is it the tps sensor. hope you can help
you should of showed how to install the volt meter and what setting to put it on. mine wont read .98 no matter what wire i put it in ect best i can get is .30s-.45 ish it wont read any higher no matter what i do, it runs fine so i just said screw it and left it be

Do you have another suggestion, I have changed the cooling sensors and done this idle reset many times still having the same issue. After it gets to operating temp it will surge then die. I started at 14 degrees timing, then 12, then 10. TPS is set to .94 t .96.... I have also cleaned the AIC valve... I can find your video you did of your buddies car that had the same issue I am having. I commented on that video

Thanks to you I had a great platform of knowledge to work from, and with that my car is running absolutely beautiful now.✌🏼
You never said when you put back in the vacuum advance chip?
Where did you plug the pins to get the reading from tps
Awesome finally problem solved with new TPS...followed your method and all good! thx
✊😎
where are you putting the positive negative for the volt meter?
Thank you , I just watched and followed along. Car runs awesome now
Could you do a video of all vacuum lines, ive been restoring my 91GT for 20 years and don’t know if my vacuum lines are good. Thanks
Thank you! This video helped me get my fox running better than ever! You know your fox stuff for sure!
My issue with my 88 dying when it came to a stop is fixed. The idle is smooth. Thank you.
just got doing this to my beater, cleaned it up a bit but still need to tweak it.. unknown cam set up with bbk junk t-body and a stripped allen set screw way out of adjustment tps over 1.4. lucky I had a accufab in the garage.
Glad you got it running a little better! Maybe you can get the rest of the bugs worked out.
that would take too long.... no idea who built this, and its staying a beater so only getting used parts thrown a it. has an eagle 347 kit and all the bolt on crap, decent upr suspension, cobra 5 lug swap, all the bells and whistles except they used e7 heads on it and the body is ruff. has some decent parts on it but damn its like they threw darts at the summit catalog total mismatch.. will be a good donor car if I can find another decent coupe.
Can you make a video for a 95 5.0 base idle reset
question for you: Car is having a hard time starting.
Hello from greece!! excellent video help me alot especialy here that I dont have anyone to work on my fox and give me hard time!
When do you plug the timing pill back in? After everything else is done?
Can a timing chain that is stretched or wore cause idle problems?
Yes. Also a bad balancer As I found out.
How do I find the adjustable tps adapter plate? I tried drilling but made a mess of the tps. 😢
I do think it will help, it’s a great starting point for sure👍
@@BREW2LFOXBODY Thanks man. I put over 1K on it this past year and the stalling and misfires / running rich got worse. Forgot to mention plug wires are good and do not sense any vacuum leaks. Was thinking of changing TFI module or replacing the distributor as the pickup coil is known to fail with these symptoms. Thanks for the quick response and will start with base idle reset.
Also have you checked to make sure the air filter isn’t clogged... simple but often over looked.
Give it a try. I'm no expert by any means but it always works for me. Hope it helps and good luck!
What bulbs do you have for your dash? I like them
Just some cheap ones from Amazon.
Great video by the way
This base idle reset works wonders!!!! Thank you so much
My car was running pretty good until the ECU burned for some reason I replaced it with the same A9P so I went ahead double checked timing 14 degrees rpm 650 and I set the tps at .97 it feels the same only difference is when I take off is easier hard to stall now and then it feels like it has better throttle respond thanks u also had a question what did you use for your dash lights their brighter
Thanks and you're welcome! I like your cars and your content, so I'll be here for the long haul.
Robert G much appreciated!
The exact video I’ve been looking for my B303 idle has been all over the place I’m guaranteeing this is going to fix it I’m gonna look into it soon thanks !!
shelby 4485 hope it helps! Thanks for watching
Brew I have a 1990 Mustang GT and I’m having all kinds of problems start the car and it runs fine for a while then shut it down and try to restart but it won’t restart unless I depress the gas pedal to the floor. Then it runs for a while then starts to surge and will shut down. Please help
how far do u wanna set the idle screw do you want it closer to the stopper or back it off alot this is my first mustang so I'm learning
Your idle screw is probably set too low. Try raising it some. But if it runs good at .68 then just leave it.
@@BREW2LFOXBODY That's kinda what I was thinking.. Thanks so much for all your videos and info!!
When do you plug the distributors timing plug back in? Id imagine when you reset the battery before the idle process but i just want to make sure
Plug it back in after you make your timing adjustment. It just kills the timing advance/retard so you get a true base time.
My 94 mustang gt idles at about 1100-1200 rpms but the screw is backed out as far as it can go?
I will try that. thank you for the input and for sharing your knowledge in this forum
Anytime! Thank you
My car idles fine with or without iac plugged in also. It keeps throwing code 54 act. I changed the sensor and it still shows it. What ohm or volt should it show when testing? Thanks
But we’re do you out the prongs at?
What wires are you back probing to get the tps voltage?
I've had all this set up how you did yours once cars gets to Temps after 25 min of driving it likes to jump to 1800 rpm and hot start only starts to the floor and has a weak idle down to 1800 any ideas?
old video but thank you! finally got my 90 gt running smooth, timing was off and tps a little off thought it was something worse
You have to wait till the car is warm before attempting this right?
Yes
@@BREW2LFOXBODY just going back through the library of videos you have. Having some idle issues with my b cam. But ill get it. Also Mr. Fusiom I made works excellent.
NTH Welding I was wondering what was up seeing you on this old video. Hope you get it worked out brother.
#foxbody.👍👍
Glad the video helped! 👍
Thanks for the video. Definitely saving it for future reference when I need to reset mine.
Awesome, Hope it helps. Thanks for watching!
I did every step but my rpms didn’t go down when I disconnected my idle air control
Either the IAC is bad or the idle screw is set too high. Could also be a bad connection between the IAC and computer
@@BREW2LFOXBODY iac is new motor craft. I’m going to try to adjust the screw I wish you lived in Miami Fl lol. Your videos are a lot of help.
my 87 5.0 revs on its own , this happens randomly. I was told its the idle air control. should I replace this or is it the tps sensor. hope you can help
My TPS won’t calibrate above 0.5. What would you recommend for a replacement.
Will this help with idle in a car with cam heads and intake.
So i followed the steps but i cant get it to idle lower than 900rpm i have a spacer for IAC do i need to give it more air or close them.
I have the same timing gun, I see you have the knob at 14° Advance. What does the crankshaft read? 14° after 0° or 24° after 10°? Thanks!👍
You leave the chip out the whole time until completed?
you should of showed how to install the volt meter and what setting to put it on. mine wont read .98 no matter what wire i put it in ect best i can get is .30s-.45 ish it wont read any higher no matter what i do, it runs fine so i just said screw it and left it be
Luv ya info but ya didn't show us how u connected the multimeter to the TPS would av been handy
Where is the video where you do the base idle reset and take the battery cable off the battery?
Ya ya I got that surging problem and please help how do I adjust the timing please
What should the rpm be at idle. Cause I can’t get mine below 1100. I’ve put new tps and iaic. Even when the idle screw all but out
I could really use some help with this, i tried this and my fox shut off immediately after unplugging
Thanks a million for this. My car is running great.
You’re welcome 👍 Hope the video helped!
Do you leave the spout out while adjusting idle?
Really useful info, tips, and tricks here on this channel. Subscribed
Brew2l what wires are u connected to on ur tps
What wires are you probing ?
I’m a kid but this is some great info for the foxes.keep up the work
iTz_ Mark2 thank you!
After plugging in the IAC and turning the car on it went straight to 2,000 rpm and won’t go down idk what to do
Hey buddy can you tell me the cheapest we to do a 5 lug and dis break conversion on a 1988 convertible I just bought one did a couple on builts on old caddies but never a muscle car any info will be greatly appreciated thanks
Forgot to mention, the car is coming together great. One thing I haven't heard, any plans for gear swap?
Chris aka Enlightened Eyes of the Lions Pride thanks brother, it's getting there. At some point I'll toss in some 3.55s
Does this process still work with aftermarket cam (E303) ?
Do you have another suggestion, I have changed the cooling sensors and done this idle reset many times still having the same issue. After it gets to operating temp it will surge then die. I started at 14 degrees timing, then 12, then 10. TPS is set to .94 t .96.... I have also cleaned the AIC valve...
I can find your video you did of your buddies car that had the same issue I am having. I commented on that video
Did you get the idle as low as you could with the IAC unplugged?
@@BREW2LFOXBODY, yes on the idle. I have tried a fe w combinations, high and low. It was idle fine until operationing temp. Then it will drive fine until you come to a stop then will die. It is a stroke kit at standard bore so a 331 with a cam. Upper is GT40.... 1993 Cobra
Move you TPS to around .80 or so and see if that helps. Mine doesn’t like a high TPS value after my cam install
@@BREW2LFOXBODY, will give it a try.... will let you know
