You know, I do complain a lot, and not just about the weather. I see it as a pressure valve. If I stop complaining and go quiet, that means I’m in real trouble. My nearest and dearest know it, too. They go full alert if I’m quiet. It’s nice to have friends like that

Be on time for an appointment.
The people of the province North Brabant are very open. They like the good life; good food and drinks. People from the western provinces keep a bit more distance.

I have to say something, it also depends on where in The Netherlands you are because the more south you go the more different the people are. People from Amsterdam compared to people from Maastricht (where I am from), well totally different. In the south we are less straightforward, we dont like to hurt people by saying things they rather not hear.

I strongly disagree, it's not about being more friendly, it's just less formal nowadays. And as stated in many video's before, kids are the common exception, but when people outgrow their 20s and have families, coming over unannounced is generally not appreciated that much.

I think it has more to do with planning if i dont know you're coming over or staying the night im just planning for my self ; i dont need to clean, i can keep the used sheets on the bed, i only have to cook and buy for one ect. So if people come over your whole schedule is in disarray and its not necessarily big things that needed to be done that day but it still feels like it.

Don't worry, you'll definitely fit in! On hearing an accent most Dutchies (especially in the western part of the country) will switch over into English. However when you tell them you want to practice your Dutch they'll be glad to speak Dutch to you and explain the (yet) unknown words.

A dutch tradition that is actualy done when early on in our teens when going out is that every one puts in an equal amount of money in to a pot . and order drinks and food from it at the end of the evening what is left is split among each other , When your young and have a part time job still in high schools , it makes a lot of sense .

I watched your channel quite a while and I know for sure that you would fit in here :) And if you ever move to this country I suggest Groningen would be the place to look after. If you're staying there and visit places like Amsterdam or Rotterdam and people asked you (because of the English language) where you're from, and you answered them with 'Groningen' they answered you back 'well you're the first one that I can understand from that area'. You could anwered them back with "I know, that is why I'm using English in the first place' :P In Groningen they speak a dialect which is the most different from standard Dutch and very hard to understand for the people in the west. And the stories that we are 'cold' and 'don't invite people that we hardly know' aren't true. There are quite some dutchies who picked people up from the Ukraine to let them stay at their homes for example.

Back from a short vacation to Texel, a lovely island where my ancestors hail from. We once owned an entire "polder" there, but it was swallowed by the sea. They had to abandon it around 1926. But now, due to the island "walking" the other way again, part of that polder is resurfacing! Hypothetically speaking, we'd still be the rightful owners, but the birds are lord & master now and that's fine. Cheers from Amsterdam!

I think people are not that different from each other, it is mainly the culture that gives the color to a society.
Being a Dutchman is a blessing and gives you the freedom to develop as a person in a beautiful way.
Even though I see that here too that freedom is no more than in the time that I was born.
After the second world war, most people were traumatized and therefore we have an older generation here who are almost all alcoholics.
The 50s and 60s we were still very conservative here and in the 70s freedom also broke loose here.
Yet it always remained very Dutch with a healthy commercial spirit, social and the smart ways to deal with agriculture and technologies.
We have found our own way and are ahead in some liberal positions in the world.
Of course, I do not always agree with politics and certainly not with the world vision that tries to push our country into a corner.
In the Netherlands we say: 'Just act normal then you're already crazy enough.' And that's why we're so direct and recognize what you call ‘Bullshit’.
Our Prime Minister goes to work on his bike, playing outside is more important than learning and a 5.5 in school is enough (D+ ,C-).
The country is green and clean and the infrastructure is great for young and old for able-bodied and disabled and the weather is not as bad as everyone claims.
Rain is necessary to keep everything green and we are not made of sugar.
I do think that you fit well in the Netherlands, you are learning the language that everyone will appreciate, even if it only works out a little.
Just be yourself and don't try to adapt, that's most appreciated, be social, say hello and be a part of the local society.
In the south of the Netherlands the people are even more lively , that is perhaps also because the Romans did not come further than Nijmegen, above the rivers the people are a bit stiffer.
I wish you a lot of luck in the Netherlands and above all have a lot of fun.

Dutch people are like "no half work" when you do it, you go for the 100%. And they are not to shy to talk openly about that they are working on something.
and when you mention it and the other person knows here and there something about it they Will without anyone's notice Just help you thats the dutch part of "together we are strong" mentality alot of dutch people are team players.

  • @gerritvalkering1068
    @gerritvalkering1068 Рік тому

Dutch people are often described as cold and distant, even though we're also described as friendly, welcoming and, in their own way, polite. We may be very direct, but not disrespectful. Or at least not intentionally. A large part is because Dutch people will always see you as you, a person, and rarely care about tattoos (except to ask if they can see them), skin color, ethnic background or religion. At the same time, Dutch people are also rather slow to warm up to others. We're easily friendly, but not easily friends. However, when you are friends with a Dutch person, expect them to care. If they ask you 'how are you' and you reply 'fine' when you're obviously not, don't expect them to take your word for it and let it rest. Expect a 'you sure' or 'is there something you want to talk about'. Also expect them to actually tell you how they are when you ask, rather than a 'fine'. It also shows in how Dutch people are generally very willing to help strangers. Up to a point.
Dutch people do tend to be quietly very chauvinistic, which is like patriotic but more snobbish. Quietly because it's 'not done' to stand up and hold a monologue about how great the country is, but they'll never pass up a chance to pass a remark like 'oh yeah, we have that too but better' or 'did you know that's a Dutch invention' or 'well, New York used to be New Amsterdam, you know', or whatever else presents itself (just like so many of us do on your channel).
In the protestant reformation, there were two main version. Lutherans and Calvinists. Where the Lutherans were opposed to the opulence and debauchery of the Roman catholic church, the Calvinists took it one step further. Fun was a dangerous excess, everyone would go to hell and nothing you can do against it, you can only make it less bad for yourself. Cheerful bunch, right? So soberness, prudence and hard work became part of the core identity of the majority of people.

I moved to Amsterdam in 1989, and love it here. The one thing I still haven't got used to is Dutch people not understanding sarcasm, even Dutch friends I've known for years just don't get it when I make a sarcastic remark, They actually take you literally when you're being sarcastic.

Yes, why would I invite someone to my home if I am not sure I would like him/her? But if they are people I like, they can come and stay over however no problem. I think we just consider the house more of a private thing in comparison. Is that coldhearted? Maybe, but I see it more as a cold layer over an actually warm heart. But as a Dutchy I am biased of course.

I think you should watch some more like interviews with younger people because the younger generation is very different from the older people. So if you want to have a full view on the netherlands thats really something you should add

My latest video on what the Dutch love and hate about the Netherlands features mostly younger people. I recorded it in Haarlem. Feels like there are more young people walking the street overall than in Alkmaar where I recorded this video.

    Aha that's the spirit :
'Nederlanders hebben een koud hart' (cold heart)
This person longs for inclusive love and humour .
Well that is what you call humour .
Bet the Dutch should become a bit less cold and learn to downplay themselves in a p.c. way.
    ♥️

Maybe 'straight' is a different way to characterize the specific directness of Dutch?
    * It was mentioned in the video, there is a saying for the most efficient way to operate: 'recht door zee' (straight across the ocean)
    * The typical Dutch Design is as straightforward was possible, with the minimalist of graphic elements: think of Miffy (created bij Dick Bruna and known in the Netherlands as Nijntje)
    * Look at the landscape: no hills, 'nether'-lands: just flat and straight lines
    * The Dutch word for 'justice' is 'rechtvaardigheid', voor 'court (of law)' it is 'rechtbank', for 'court case' it is 'rechtzaak'.
Contextually people will clearly instantly recognize the meaning of the word 'recht', distinguishing between the graphic orientation and the legal angle, but it is remarkable that they are semantically related.

I bet you have some Dutch genes that wishes to go home ;) And i bet you would love to be here. Your dreads and tattoo's are not a problem here when you just act normal. Dutch people are just the same people as the people all over this world. You have good ones and bad ones, smart ones and not that smart ones. We just like to create new things and be as good in it as we can. We like to do it our way. Freedom is not an American invention ;) The Dutch were free long before America exists. And. Your FED is owned by 12 banks and 2 of those banks are Dutch ;) Strange ain't it?
