Why you should be using liquid fertiliser on your hungry crops | Gardening 101 | Gardening Australia

Adding organic matter such as compost to your garden beds is a good way to improve the soil over time. Organisms in the soil, such as bacteria or fungi, break this material down, making nutrients available for plant roots to absorb. But if you have heavy-feeding hungry crops like leafy greens, a liquid fertiliser can provide instant nutrients that can be taken up straight away. Subscribe 🔔 ab.co/GA-subscribe
Josh uses a combination of fish emulsion and liquid kelp, which gives a good mix of macro and micronutrients. Concentrations vary between products so always dilute it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Over fertilising is not only wasteful, as plants can’t always use the excess, but it can actually damage plants or leach off into groundwater or waterways.
Liquid fertilisers can also help boost plants living under trees and competing with larger plants for nutrients.
A liquid feed can also help quickly address nutrient deficiencies in plants, as a foliar spray can be absorbed more quickly than waiting for it to be absorbed via the roots. Josh finds this is particularly useful for citrus in alkaline soils.
The bacteria that drive the composting process also need nutrients, so applying an organic, high-nitrogen liquid fertiliser to your compost pile can help activate it if it’s become a bit dry.

Good tip. Funnily enough, here I am today going around the garden doing exactly that as we have been having horrible heat here in SA and the plans looked a bit off but I will do the same to the compost bins as well.
