Matt Cameron tells funny Nirvana stories
| Podcast: Seattle Today |
That was the show Nirvana first played Smells Like Teen Spirit.
yes, and by what I can tell, Kurt needs to restring his guitar after Teen Spirit. He was playing the song so hard it f***** up his guitar. Seems fitting for the lore and history of the song.
Yeppers. I have that show flyer hanging in my work-space.
Seattle: A music scene so rich with talent you can ask someone who doesn't even play guitar to change a string. What an amazing story.
@@miameramusic Matt plays guitar
I was at show myself
Nirvana playing a show, Matt there changing Kurt's guitar string and AiC performing for Singles shoots across the street. If there is a heaven, that was it.
Facts right there
God what give...
Take me there
💯
@@VanillaMacaron551 are you related to Matt? :D
Grunge music may be great, but heaven is where Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of God
It's funny, even though Matt has been drumming in Pearl Jam for a long time now, I still see him as Soundgarden drummer. He'll always be a Soundgarden guy to me.
He’s Pearl Jams longest serving drummer now. He’s been in PJ for over 23 years!
@@markstrugnell no shit! Lol
Yup!
I prefer to remember him as only with SG too.
Facts
I'm glad I got to see Soundgarden in a small club, in 1988. My friends and I ran into Chris Cornell on the street the next day and talked to him for a few minutes. Very nice guy. I remember thinking, "Damn, this guy is really good looking. Even if Soundgarden doesn't make it, he could have a modeling career."
So good looking ❤️ heartbreaker
Not that he would want one, though.
I can’t even imagine what it was like to be in Washington during those days when these bands were all playing shows around the state. Just the possibility of going out to see Nirvana play one night and then potentially going out another night that same week and being able to see Alice In Chains is so amazing to think about.
Or, in the case of this particular night, you could be at a Nirvana concert, and go directly across the street to an Alice In Chains gig!! To have seen either of these bands would have been incredibly special. For the two to have been playing gigs on the same night right across the street from each other would made my brain explode..
@@kidwajagstang I dont think i would be able to decide which show to watch. Probably end up walking back and forth in between songs. lol
You’re not wrong at all. It really must have been something special to be in Seattle during the late 1980s and early 1990s right before it all exploded into the mainstream.
is that the moore theater?
But then when they all hit it big they were out doing world tours so the local seen probably got real quiet real quick
Matt is such a cool dude. Love him
Matt Cameron is as down to earth as I imagined. Sweet hearing his buzz story. Melvins are amazing. Underrated. One of the best live bands I've ever seen. It's great that they're on Mike Patton's label where they can just do their thing. Major label wasn't for them (even though those releases were all excellent).
I always love hearing new, unexpected Kurt stories! This is one of my favorite YT channels.
Right on! I was floored hearing that! We need to hear more from Matt
Matt is a drumming legend!
One of my absolute favorite drummers ever. Incredible talent.
Matt Cameron is so funny! So the OK Hotel, it was one of the coolest places to see bands play. It was dark because you really didn't want to see it with the lights on, the pit was really crowded and a few tables and chairs in the back, I saw Grunt truck and Nirvana at the OK Hotel and a few others, but I would have to check with my brother to make sure I'm not thinking of The Tractor, Off Ramp, Mo's, etc when listing other bands I saw there. The OK Hotel wasn't really cleaned up much when Alice played for the filming of Singles. AHHH Seattle back then!
2 favorite bands ever..
me too1
Matt always tells a story with his drumming. he creates a lot of layers
Great story love to hear the day to day things . Amazing all that talent in one city.
We agree!
The Seattle scene i soo cool because it has all of this story of friends just supporting each other's band.
Yep and the tavistock institute 🤣🤣
I MISS KURT 😪
Nirvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Thanks for the rock.
& so many more!!!
STP was LA not Seattle…. AIC was though…
Who cares where STP is from they rock
dont forget the Smashing Pumpkins
Great era man ! Wish I could go back in time, but with this mind !
Matt Cameron telling Nirvana stories is all I want to listen to now.
Love those early stories!! Thanks for sharing the memories Matt!!
Matt Cameron, One of my favorite drummers.
Super cool to hear Matt share these memories.
Great stuff! What a down to earth dude. I love hearing the behind the scenes stories.
I’ve just read about the “OK Hotel” and how it functioned to support the scene. I’ve read that the money for the trip nirvana took to LA in order to start the recordings of “Nevermind” was financed by a show at the hotel. (“Late century dream: movements in the US indie music underground”).
Amazing story. Matt is a legend.
Matt Cameron CV:
Drummer: Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Pearl Jam
Guitar technician: Nirvana
I saw Tad, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Butthole Surfers and many other bands there. A dingy paradise!!!
I was at that gig in Olympia!! Those were the days before Uber security and corporate interests marketing 'grunge'. I can distinctly recall it felt like being at a drive in. 😆
Just a great guy. One of my favorite drummers, and an extremely underrated songwriter.
Cameron is in the top 5 of my favorite drummers,I have seen SG play live in 3 different time zones, from Screaming to King Animal and the dude can beat the shit out if those skins, and a cool guy on top of the that a he will always have a job in the music industry's top bands
Look at 3rd Secret Matt&Kim$Christ&Bubba Great to hear new music like this Love Em
The way he describes the string incident and the saw dust in the water 😂😂
The OK Hotel! God, I miss 90s Seattle...
I can only imagine, Carrie! I do too within every cell in my body...and I wasn't even there. Haha! Born in '87 I was just a young kid in Sweden in the '90s, but I started listening to Nirvana and the Offspring in '97, so I did the best I could trying to catch up. I still listen to all of these Seattle bands to this day. What an amazing era. The '90s...the angsty, dirty, creative freedom paradise. Way cool that you were there! Peace & Love from Sweden ✌️
Me too! But I’ve never been there
That's some great stories - funny to hear. 'cameron seems like a nice guy. Wonder if he told stories about Jason Everman too(?) as he was in both bands
Wicked interview. 👍
Oh wow Matt was at the Off Ramp show! Regarded by Nirvana nerds as their favorite show ever. Nirvana played for nearly 2 hours and played a really wacky, one off setlist.
I remember your name from the livenirvana forums?! am I right?
@@hurti1000 yeah haha, been there since 2002
@@JohnVullo good stuff, also followed livenirvana since the early 2000s, never really a contributing member, but always a fan and in appreciation of all the hard work a lot of guys there put in.... after a break I gave the site a few visits over the last weeks.... and In some way, it ignites my love for nirvana again (which never really was away, but fell asleep for a while ;)
documenting history one video at a time!
On it!
first band i saw live was soundgarden in 92
MC - still my favourite drummer to this day.

Please tell us about the North Drums story
😎✌️🤩🥁🍗
This is the best ever!
Ha! That story brings a whole new meaning to chicken drumstick (ba duh ba..ts) Nirvana liked "Run Chicken Run" by legendary Link Wray enough to get permission to use his riff in their song "Breed"
Permission? Say what?
#SeattleMusicHistory Love It Guys!!! Spank You All So Very Much!!! Peace*Love*Music From Seattle Y*all!!! 👊 ☮️ 👊
16th gig with Dave, 2nd in Seattle
Totally cool stories!!! 😊🤘✌️
They are!
Full interview?
You may to.invite to the band LIT
Wow, it's amazing how much Matt looks and sounds like Tony Hawk.
ABSOLUTELY,AARON.....HANG LOOSE N' FULLA JUICE,DUDE!!!
Matt is a sweetheart!
Is there a full interview? Matt seems like a really cool guy
He really does. Seems super "normal". Down-to-earth.
Oh wow this is amazing what a great bunch of stories by 'Seattle's greatest drummer' - Dave Grohl
Kurt Cobain always ❤️
AWSOME. What an honor.
😃Hi Seattle🎸Hi from Slovakia🇸🇰🌲🌲
We love you Matt 🤘🏼
Funny stuff, but who was that guy being interviewed? I didn’t recognize him. 👍🏻
I love Matt!❤
Que historia dahora, muito foda TOP !!!
Nirvana is one of my Favorites So I would go with Kurt Cobain in this Video.
Everyone loves The Melvins!!
Matt Fvcking Cameron!🙌🙌🙌🥳❤❤❤
Matt is a drum god, him and Dave are possibly two of the best drummers of his generation. SG and Nirvana were too important to rock scene at that time. Looking at scene today makes me sad!!
I was on a date @ OK Hotel show..
Is that The Moore?
‘Krist would go in and have some chicken’
Niiccee.
👍
✌️✌️✌️
Love this ✌️❤️🤘🥁🥁🥁
Is that t'he Moore Theatre?
Indeed it is!
@@TheGrungeScene Cool! I was There!! Greetings from Barcelona, good job!
They should have called the video Dave Grohl's wool socks and sawdust water
Moore Theater?
Change my string! That’s what I’ll do next time instead of doing it myself! Fuck it! 😆
Wish Kurt did that shingles movie and pulp fiction ...he was a natural at everything and really needed a movie career...him in reservoir dogs would have been perfect !
He declined being Lance.
@EndofMusic he declined to be in the movie ...while sound garden was filming , Nirvana was doing a gig right across the street ...it was obviously all set up so all the bands could be in the film but Kurt declined to appear.
@@LilHondaCivic808 And rightly so. That reminds why Nirvana is NIRVANA!
my 15th birthday
That was my 11th birthday
Imagine if Matt Cameron was the drummer instead of Dave Grohl LOL
@lonesomecrow I Alice in Chains instrumental wise was just as good, if not better than any other grunge band. I actually think Robert Deleo (STP) was/is the best bassist in grunge by far. Listen to Stone Temple pilots Bass tracks solo
@lonesomecrow and I have to disagree and say that Layne Staley was the best vocalist, no discussion. That's just my opinion
Sean Kinney from AiC is criminally underrated. Listen to no excuses
@lonsomcrow, have you heard Jerry Cantrell play guitar? He wasn’t just the best guitarist from the grunge era, but one of the best in Rock overall. AIC was extremely talented top to bottom. Hell, AIC wasn’t even my favorite band from that era but I could see how great they were.
When he wrote the announce that finally led Dave to find the band, Kurt wrote something between the lines of asking especially for someone who played like Matt. I remember seeing that piece of newspaper from Matt's IG story some time ago
We shared a lovely girlfriend.
Spit roasted? Sorry had to 🤩🤣
Kurt obviously pulled a douchey move to give his guitar to soundgardens drummer…. He obviously knew who he was giving it to … like we’re nirvana and we’re bigger than soundgarden now … soundgarden was on sst and probably a&m by that time …. But Kurt was power tripping in that move obviously (or trying to) … it’s funny for Matt to call him
Out for that ! I would too! Kurt had his douchey moments I’m sure! … I used to idolize him as a 13 year old kid in 92’ .. but cmon let’s be real! He wasn’t a saint ! Kool to here other guys his age tell real shit … I also begged my parents so I could see the In utero tour - glad I did that
You’re so far off base, it’s crazy. Kurt was not power tripping at all.
First off, He broke a string, he was on stage, and he asked a peer of his to help him out. Happens all the time. I’ve asked my friends to help me out in similar situations many times.
Second, Kurt loved Soundgarden
Furthermore, at the time Soundgarden were a FAR bigger band. Nevermind wouldn’t be released for another 6 months while Soundgarden had already been nominated for a Grammy.
So yeah, not even close to true.
But, in your defense, Kurt definitely wasn’t a saint. He was moody and dismissive. But, of all the things you could say about him, egotistical just doesn’t ring true.
Grunge water
you know whats fucked up ? he sounds like cobain 2 tones higher. he has typical 90's grunge voice and mannerism.
Who the hell is matt cameron anyway?
What was across the street, or did he mean the ally, the only thing I remember across the street from the OK was the Viaduct and water.
alice filmed their performances for singles on a pier, so i guess that checks out
Dah funk is on homie's neck?
Hahah 🤣🥲🤣
🤣 a late perhaps?
Why would you wear a scarf around your neck that makes you look like a burn victim?
Was thinking 🤔 looked weird for sure … maybe he is ..
@@uncooldispatch5438 jeez, i hope not! I would feel like such an ass!
Am I the only person not impressed by The Melvins? What am I missing?
They’re ok.
Gotta give them a little bit of credit but they are not the whole reason why.
And buzz is always low key dissing Kurt and Dave these days anytime I see an interview he does. I mean they’re good, but it wasnt meant to be.
If the Melvins really do love what they do then they should be happy where they are. But buzz and the drummer always seem bitter when people ask them questions about the early grunge scene back then.
@@XxStonedImmaculatexX theyre not bitter. They're annoyed with being asked the SAME Questions about grunge all the time..
If you have to ask you'll never know..lol
@@XxStonedImmaculatexX Totally agree with what you said. Buzz is a total troll.
Nope. They were influential but as others say below they just ok and not the the be all end all as some of their fans claim.
Matt is the finer drummer. Sorry Dave.
