Americans don't play snooker...they play football. A snooker table needs some yard lines. It is huge. I can't imagine playing it, the pockets are in other zip codes.
From memory, snooker tables are 12ft by 6ft. American pool tables are 9ft by 6ft. I could be a bit off. The main reason why snooker is so much harder is the balls are smaller and the pockets are tiny.

I think Ronnie likes to do that, deliberately not finishing off the 147, in order to send a message to the tournament organizers. If you want the maximum, you need to offer something properly.
The commentary, the ref and King’s face’s just say it all throughout this! It’s just epic from start to finish! They all think it’s just absolutely ridiculous that Ronnie’s asking that question but after every ball that goes down they begin to realise he wasn’t asking such a silly question 😂😂😂

2024 ! And it’s still buzzing! Just tells what an outrageous match it is yet you’d just is a smirk or a half smile from him ! That’s Ronnie! No exaggeration! Just pot and move on ! The man deserves a Madam Tussaud!
6:41 I am always impressed when the commentators know exactly what shot is going to be played. I know they were ex-players themselves but still. Fair play! Ronnie is a legend. Haha just playing insane shots while having casual chats with the ref. Had the pleasure of meeting him about 15 years ago when he came to run at the athletics track I worked at. I was totally star struck. Such a nice guy as well as wildly talented.
Snooker has the best commentary of any sport I’ve watched. Ex-players, characters of the game. Wish all sports had that (Formula 1 had Coulthard and Brundle for a season, that was ace!).
I have been playing snooker for twenty years. I have not seen a player who controls the white ball with such magic. Ronnie draws a plan in his brain to finish all the balls since he opens the red balls in the first hit. This can only be done by the greats in this game… he is a genius
It’s not like that but it looks like it because he just feels what to do for the next ball without needing to think about it or aim much. It’s 2-3 balls ahead I’d guess…
To be fair that's how a lot of people look facing a legend, especially when he shows you exactly why you can't measure up. At the highest level in any sport every player has to fundamentally believe that given a series of games they will win more than anyone else. Seems arrogant and maybe that's part of it but without that certainty in your skill you can second guess yourself when everything is on the line and then you're done. Imagine believing that hard in yourself and being among the best in the world and Ronnie just coming in and working you over like you're new here. All that dedication and hard work and here's a guy that is better than you even out of his prime...some of the most promising future greats never recover and fade into the background. Watch some videos on how much better Michael Jordan was from the perspective of the greats of basketball for instance. Ronnie is one of those guys who are just better.
Growing up I thought I’d never see anyone better Hendry and his 7 worlds, century breaks, maximums etc but I could see Ronnie had raw talent like never before. It was incredible. So proud he’s battled his way to the GOAT that he is.
That's a fair point though it must be remembered that Hendry won 5 world titles in a row. That's something that no snooker player has ever come close to. It's a shame he lost interest in the game but expected when you've won everything the game has to offer. It would be fitting if Ronnie got the 8th title, but with players like Selby, Trump , Higgins, Williams and more still around and doing it , it's a tall order. In my head he's the GOAT but Hendry is the most consistent player I've ever seen
@@Winter-gf9nt nothing against Hendry, but to me, Ronnie winning in both eras and especially with the high level we have right now, is more impressive than that.
One of my favourite parts about this is Dennis Taylor saying ‘But that’s the beauty of watching Ronnie O’Sullivan, you just never know what’s gonna happen next’ … and then look what unfolds. Just amazing.
I remember people criticizing Ronnie for this, and to some, they may of had a point, but the guy is an animal...the additional pressure he put on himself at the start by stopping the play and then going on to clear up like that is just mind-blowing, The guy truly thrives on pressure and seems to look for it for motivation. He seems to get bored in championship matches at the highest level and looks for pressure to give him motivation!! J.V's comments also cracked me up "Ronnie's doing his maximum for free", "Maybe we should do a whip round if he nails the black"🤣🤣
Was he trying to weigh up risk? The balls looked kind to get a winning clearance. Anything can happen in snooker as they say, maybe he was thinking about the risk of going for the 147 and a pay day vs best way of securing the match.
Its been years and i keep coming back to watch this. The fact Ronnie asked for the prize was astonishing, the fact he didnt wanna play the last black was understandable, but because of these events, people seems to have overlooked the fact that this maximum was one of the fastest 147 in history too considering he paused for a bit at the beginning!
This man is a genius, the like who will never be seen again. There have been some incredible players and there will be even more incredible players to come in the future but I doubt anyone will ever draw a crowd and be as naturally phenomenal and successful as Ronnie. Every young player should aspire to be like him
Ronnie will be remembered as someone who changed the game of snooker, who raised the standard of professional snooker so high that a new breed of players came into being.
As an American who was lucky enough to have a father that taught me to play snooker as a child, I'm 50yrs old now, I'm so happy for UA-cam and the chance to watch some of the greats of the game. Ronnie is undoubtedly the best to ever pick up a cue. Simply mesmerizing watching him play. Also, with UA-cam, having access to players of the past suck as the great Alex Higgins is wonderful as well. All hail the King of Snooker, Ronnie "The Rocket" O'Sullivan!!
Ronnie O'Sullivan is the reason I found snooker to begin with and completely fell in love with it as an American it made me realize how sloppy our game of pool is in comparison it certainly improved my game just taking it much more seriously! My speed control cue control had always been decent but decent isn't good enough !!
I watched this match at least a dozen times... watching Ronnie do what he does best... is so enlightening!! He makes the game look so easy... but anyone whose played this game knows just how hard it is to do what he does... I do NOT believe (like alot who follow Ronnie) that we will ever see a player like him again... just jaw dropping... & yes he showed them all even his critics...
I was a passable pool player, and then I tried my hand at snooker - disaster! Since then I've come to appreciate what the professional players do, and especially how well and uniquely Ronnie plays. And that for decades at the very highest level.
This is why Ronnie is the GOAT. Not just because he's won more than everyone else, it's the magical moments he's produced that nobody else can, and he's been doing to for over 30 years and still going strong. This maximum that he called after the first black, the fastest ever maximum, winning a triple crown event at 17, being the first to reach 1000 centuries, having more centuries and maximums than anyone else, being the first top player to effectively use his weaker hand regularly, turning up to a world championship and winning it despite not playing in any other event all season, etc. Who else could have done all this but Ronnie? 🙂
Yes totally all those things you said. Taking a year out then winning the world championship is just god like- pure raw natural talent. I was watching him and Jimmy white practise and talk snooker, and Ronnie was playing side spins, check side and all those, but couldn’t explain it- It was so funny- he said “I don’t know how to explain it, I just get down and know how to - do- it.. *and pop- he whisked the white made a perfect pot and check side stopped perfect for the next shot. Amazing
For the people that aren’t aware, he was asking because he was publicly humiliating tournaments for getting cheaper on paying players on the maximum. That’s why you see him, not want to hit the last black until the ref says something to him. There’s actually another tournament where he purposely gets the last colour ball opting the pink to purposely miss the maximum and got a 146. That’s how skilful this master is 🥋😂
He knew he was making a mint for the sponsors when the sponsors weren't putting up any money for the 147. And he was right. Here we are, still watching this break ans still seeing those sponsors. In the end, he did it for the fans. For those people in the audience to not be cheated out of seeing the 147. Good on ya, Ronnie!
Incredible. That shot that went into the far corner and between the green and brown to come back with perfect placement for his next shot... probably the best shot ive ever seen. Because he meant every part of it.
The picture of the white stopping between those two reds, mm perfect, sublime. I don't think he could have placed it better if he was allowed to pick it up.
In many ways, this was equally as brilliant as his fastest clearance. Ronnie is human, a genius, a bit of an eccentric and i cannot and will not judge him for anything. He makes this game interesting and he brings a lot of joy by his maverick cavalier attitude. He backs it all up with a god inspired talent, breathtaking execution. Let’s not kid ourselves, he takes this game very seriously.❤
Yeah, this and the infamous 146 was all done basically in protest at how the prize for making a 147 has lowered drastically over the last decade. Wasn't until Jan asked him to do it for the fans that he nonchalantly smashed it in. Not sure what point it served tbh, all that it proved is that he's that good that many more 147s are likely to come from him so the sponsors should still be worried about putting up such huge prizes 🤣
he breaks with left. hes probably a top16 player with left only. one tournament actually forbid him to play with left because his opponent was mad about it.
Ronnie is the goat and still the reason a lot of people watch snooker. Without him snooker will die a little I’m 100% certain and if they don’t do enough to keep his mind occupied he will get bored and quit because he loves the game but he’s not challenged enough. Love his mentality ❤
I love that Yan didn't let him shake his hand signifying the game is complete and appealed for all us fans otherwise I doubt this would be available to watch at our leisure again all these years later thanks Yan and Ronnie!
Simply the GOAT! Thank god we live in a time to see a player like him because we will never see no one like him ever, so we are lucky! I love this man so much! 🐐
I'm 42 an not in my life time will we ever see a player again like Ronnie his arrogance his swagger an his style could an would never be repeated respect to him as I think snooker players get get the credit they deserve ❤
In a career full of unbelievable moments, this has got to be up there. To ask if there was a prize for a maxi after 1 black and then get down and blast one in, something many players never do in their career, is absolutely incredible. There's only one man, ever, that could do that, The Rocket!
The more i think of it, the more i'm convinced inner confidence plays no part in this man's persona anymore. Born of natural ability, he is indeed Snooker's gift of the G.O.A.T..
I think of all the pure genius moments in Sport, and I can’t think of a better example of Ronnie asking the Referee what’s the prize for a 147 after 1 red and black, finding out there isn’t one then going I. To achieve it anyway. Pure Genius, the greatest player ever to pick up a cue in the history of the universe since the beginning of time.
He knew full well there was no prize. He stopped play knowing he could do a 147 to make the point, if you're not going to reward them anymore, why should we go out of our way to try for them. People who resent wealth would attack him for being greedy, but it's an entertainment business and the advertisers are still making the money off the back of it. He's right to object to them cashing in on his talent and not giving him a cut.
Getting shape, position and tempo is what this game is all about. It's not necessarily making the actual shot, it's setting up the next 2-3 shots that counts.
I remember watching this live. I also seen his 5:08s 147 at the crucible. There was even a tournament where he almost got a 147, I think he missed the pink, but done a 147 in the very next frame. As well as winning the Welsh open where he did a 147 to clinch the title. We will never see his like again. Total genius!
Remember the 147 he made in the deciding frame against Selby? I know it's only snooker and hitting a ball in a pocket but at times Ronnie is borderline supernatural
@@Pax_Veritas I remember that too. It's only "hitting a ball in a pocket" to people that haven't played it enough to know how difficult it is. You obviously do. And the tables you and I play on at the local snooker club are easier and more forgiving than professional tables. The pockets on those tables are quite a bit tighter and there's only a millimeter or 2 each side of the ball. Ronnie makes it look alot easier than it really is though. He plays way better than the average professional left handed lol.
@@Pax_Veritas 44 isn’t easy. That’s better than my highest on a 12ft table. I use to go to a couple of snooker clubs. They’re quite popular in Glasgow so there’s plenty to chose from. Some cheap clubs and some more expensive but better clubs. My highest break as a kid on our 6ft by 3ft table was 53 and was mostly blacks and blues but on the 12ft table it’s 37 but was mostly brown and blues. I always found the blue the easiest as it’s a bigger pocket and I’m terrible at controlling the white so I’d mostly pot a red and the white would be in a position that a balk colour or a blue was easiest. Loved playing the game though. I still play but not as much nowadays.
This man is a legend and has the most insane controversies in sport. From trying to play without his shoes cause they were too tight to having his shirt slightly untucked. The "bad boy" of snooker for sure.

The commentary, the ref and King’s face’s just say it all throughout this! It’s just epic from start to finish! They all think it’s just absolutely ridiculous that Ronnie’s asking that question but after every ball that goes down they begin to realise he wasn’t asking such a silly question 😂😂😂
My grand mother never liked any sport but when Ronnie played she watched and she didnt understand much English but somehow did she manage to learn the rules and the point system just by watching Ronnie play, so i watch back on these games and remember watching with my grand mother both with joy and sadness as she passed away some years ago now.

Haha just playing insane shots while having casual chats with the ref. Had the pleasure of meeting him about 15 years ago when he came to run at the athletics track I worked at. I was totally star struck. Such a nice guy as well as wildly talented.
This was the most relatable comment...I keep on thinging same stuff all the time while watching snooker
There are many ways to play a shot, but if you play well you all would choose the same path and that’s why they know what a player will play.
It’s all natural angles with small side but they way pros make it look so easy is unreal but the Rocket is on another level
that commentator was John Virgo, former pro player. The other commentator was Dennis Taylor former World Champion.
Snooker has the best commentary of any sport I’ve watched. Ex-players, characters of the game. Wish all sports had that (Formula 1 had Coulthard and Brundle for a season, that was ace!).
Remember watching this live. Simply the greatest snooker player anyone will ever see. 🐐
@b3rliner624 yeah that what he said to Stephen Hendry on his channel for the tough table challenge
The fact that his opponent seemed confused the entire time makes this even more impressive 😂
he did have a Homer Simpson look about him huh 😆
I thought he was just trying to stay still to not distract him, because he knew exactly what was going on

It's the way he motivates himself. Unbelievable talent
Was he trying to weigh up risk? The balls looked kind to get a winning clearance. Anything can happen in snooker as they say, maybe he was thinking about the risk of going for the 147 and a pay day vs best way of securing the match.

That’s how skilful this master is 🥋😂
This makes so much more sense now, I wondered why his demeanor was so different on the last black.
He knew he was making a mint for the sponsors when the sponsors weren't putting up any money for the 147. And he was right. Here we are, still watching this break ans still seeing those sponsors.

@@Pax_Veritas I remember that too. It's only "hitting a ball in a pocket" to people that haven't played it enough to know how difficult it is. You obviously do. My highest break as a kid on our 6ft by 3ft table was 53 and was mostly blacks and blues but on the 12ft table it’s 37 but was mostly brown and blues.
