gibbdude The worst Mario Maker level is better than any SMB level. It may have been impressive at the time but the interactivity and depth of ideas are just absent compared to the wealth of options players have in SMM. Powerups in SMB don’t give you new opportunities or challenges in levels, just an easy way to take out enemies, whereas levels in SMM can be designed with only one powerup like the Boomerang and still be captivating and memorable.

No wonder I didn't hear about Outer Wilds when it came out, Dunkey didn't even mention it. Kinda surprised, maybe from the description it doesn't sound like something he'd enjoy but after playing it I definitely think he would, and I kinda rely on Dunkey to highlight really neat indie games I might've missed. Hope he gets around to it some day.

He does recognize really niche indie games but he is not gonna come around to all of them especially the ones that he probably won't like. One of the most underrated games i've seen was zero ranger and that game is way more underrated than outer wilds.

One of my favorite things that makes his lists so great is that this is HIS list. What he played this year, no matter if the game is 20 years old. Always makes me revisit my backlog

7:42: In defense of Earthbound's combat, I think the HP going down incrementally after taking damage creates a lot more urgency while also being more forgiving than most turn-based RPGs. That enemy's overpowered move? In every other game, you're dead already. But in Earthbound, you can spam Healing but you better mash that A button

One of the best games ever made, and Dunkey turned it into the backstory for the best villain type ever.
EDIT: Aaaand Ikaruga! I've never seen a "best of" list with so many games I've not only played but have on my "best of all time" list! Both of these are on Steam, and both are amazing. And both get very little screen time here. Oh well!

... I have a very hard time believing Dunkey played Outer Wilds (1 second mark, big tornadoes) and it didn't place on the list. I've got to assume he just thought it looked cool but didn't have time to play it... I hope he returns to it, I picked it up and 100 percented the game over around 40 hours and I can safely say its one of my favourite videogames ever... The sense of exploration and danger is incredible, I rarely ever feel so vulnerable just walking around a game's spaces...
And up until playing, I don't think any piece of media had ever actually made me feel 'existential dread.' I know there are movies out there that do it, I just hadn't felt it like this till now.
The idea of the game is that you explore a mini solar system stuck in a time loop, trying to solve the mystery of a long-gone alien race who occupied your solar system centuries ago. And the solar system is fully simulated! Each planet and moon's orbit is fully simulated, the planet's moon will pull on you with its gravity as it flies overhead... you can slingshot around planets with enough speed... and then there's a bunch of weird sci-fi crazy, quantum shit that they somehow gameified, which I won't spoil, but it's cool, trust me.
The time loop in this game is very important too, there are windows as short as few seconds in exact places inside the loop where you can discover something.
It's been described as a 'Knowledge Metroidvania,' where you can't really ever replay it because the only thing stopping you from beating the game in a few minutes is your own knowledge of its systems and the worlds and their intertwining histories... I ended up 100 percenting the game not too long after beating it, so exploring all there is to offer (and I'm STILL finding small stuff anyway) took around 40 hours. After that, I decided to go to the ending, but realistically, most playthroughs will only take 15 hours or so, and then you can replay the game and discover even more facets of the games mysteries.
Stayed for the after credits scene like a damn marvel movie.

Some games can be played wrong. A developer takes that risk removing the kiddie bumpers. Some reviewers will choose to play a game in a way that they won't enjoy.

Hey short hike got released for switch today and I remembered this video and scooped it up. I have to thank you dunk cause my GF and I have been stressing going back to work for the school district, and short hike was a perfect wholesome distraction. I dont know anything about that guy or the game but your statement is wrong. There are some games where you cant just hop in and play and get the full experiance. Some examples are Rust, Ark, League of Legends. These are all games that take time to learn and have tedious learning process. My point is that yes people who make reviews dont always have the right to review a game. And a reviewer who has played plenty of games with a quicker learning process might instantly get bored.
Blue Duff That sounds utterly retarded. If a game doesn’t impress a critic; it simply didn’t work for him. If a game didn’t impress a ton of critics and gamers then I’m pretty sure the game isn’t all that. Having tedious gameplay and I use the term “gameplay” loosely when referring to Death Stranding is fine, but blaming others for not wanting to sit through said “gameplay” is ridiculous and easily approaches fanboy territory.

Death Stranding is probably going to be the standout game when it comes to a hit or miss title. If you like the things it did well enough, then those alone are going to make it worthwhile and enjoyable, and probably will make it a very memorable experience.
However, if your tastes don't align with that exact section of the game, and you try to enjoy literally anything else about it, you are likely to find it bland and boring.
Dunkey's review is still a valid review and important to watch even if you already know you disagree with him, see Dunkey's piece on Video Game Reviewers to understand why people who would never like the game can still give useful reviews.

@@NemoK I would counterpoint and say that there isn't a right or wrong way to play a game, especially such an open sandbox one. There's the "advised" way, and an objective through line, but that's not all you're allowed to do. Dunkey not liking the game because of the way he played it doesn't make him not liking it any less valid, his opinion isn't suddenly going to change if he's told he just needs to play it the "right way." No one's opinion would.

@@bihn Because it is Pokemon it should disappear from the list, as one of the most appreciated and long standing RPG series of all times Pokemon is actually trash, graphism are poor, game is unoptimized, combat system has barely evolved since the 3rd gen' except for Mega Evolution and Dynamax which are gimmicks, not evolutions and people forgive all those BECAUSE it's Pokemon.

Crowcowdile “any other game series” my dude, games like Fifa, Madden, NBA, COD and whatnot are still extremely popular to this day and those are far more unimaginative than Pokemon. Pokemon’s formula at least consists of new stuff each gen, but the other games I’ve mentioned literally get 1 or 2 new features each new release. Not defending Pokemon btw
