Breaking Bad follows protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher who lives in New Mexico with his wife (Anna Gunn) and teenage son (RJ Mitte) who has cerebral palsy. White is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given a prognosis of two years left to live. With a new sense of fearlessness based on his medical prognosis, and a desire to secure his family's financial security, White chooses to enter a dangerous world of drugs and crime and ascends to power in the world. The series explores how a fatal diagnosis such as White's releases a typical man from the daily concerns and constraints of normal society and follows his transformation from mild family man to a kingpin of the drug trade.

Ending on "we've got nowhere to go but up" not only manifests itself in Walt's future riches, but it also ironically foreshadows the ending of this episode - one of the worst moments from Walt, morally speaking. Further, this scene really gives us the subtle signs of Walt's constant need (or greed) for more. Such a great scene. Brutally calm.
And sadly, he did achieve riches beyond his wildest expectations, at the expense of his family and everyone he cared about…
This is the moment Hal left Lois for Skyler
🤣🤣
This was recorded in 2010 and Bryan Cranston looks exactly as young as he did in an episode of the 90s paranormal series X-Files where he appeared I don't remember the year but it was around the 90s
Series 6 Drive: (1999).
See what you mean but to me he looks more like Hal.
This is one of my favourite scenes of the show, even when they were still young Walt yearned for more that he could realistically achieve and Skyler had to pull him back to reality.

Skylar is usually in blue in the series, showing rep for her name “Sky” and also showing how blue she is (unhappy), and here she’s in pink known as a color of love, which is really sad since we all know what happens, I know that they coordinated the colors of the characters throughout the story thoroughly so it’s nice seeing Skylar happy for once, even when its flashback that’s supposed to parallel the present of the story

I didn’t know Hal made a cameo appearance on here.
When did Hal get a wife? I’m sure they’re going to live very happily in their new home😊
Walt was always a cold killer, he just didnt know he had it in him at this stage
Walt wasn't always a cold killer. He was a good man with a dark side sure. But everyone does and the whole point of BB was to show how much someone can change if they listened to their shadow self. Remember when he killed Krazy 8? He kept apologizing and crying and he was trying to come up with excuses not to kill him. Now compare that to his violent jail rampage in season 5.
I swear Bryan and Anna here both legitimately look how they looked in the 90s. How the hell did they pull that off?
Simple, they recorded this 34 years ago.
Makeup and the right lighting. They did a really good job. Bryan looks so much like Hal again.
You see such a fundamental difference between them from the beginning. Walt wants something bigger, he has big aspirations for the future, even if it's just for a house. Skyler is satisfied with what is right in front of her. She is ready to accept the house, even if they can find one bigger and better. It is in their price range and right there. He's willing to fly closer to Sun, she's happy to set roots down there.
This is a gap that’s never really been explained. He left Grey Matter and now he is working at this lab. Where does being a high school teacher come from?
One of my favorite musical compositions by Dave Porter at the beginning there. So nostalgic and sad knowing the horrors that happen in the house.
I wonder what eventually got Walt to concede and agree to the house
Walt looks just like Hal here
The ego and overconfidence were there already, the “I’m the one who knocks” alpha demeanour was there already.
Basically, you take young Walter White, an take away all hope for the future, and you get a Heisenberg.
Back when housing was actually attainable lmao
Back in the 90s (which is when this flashback takes place) this was considered a “starter home”. Nowadays, it’s a mansion in comparison.
This is the moment when short sighted fiscal policies became llate stage capitalism
I can watch any clip of BB or BCS and get sucked in as if I’ve never seen the show!

I was always curious on how this scene even was like. I had only heard about its existence a few times.
flashback to when they were both on Seinfeld as Jerry dated Skyler and Elaine dated Dr Watley
I loved seeing him look like Hal again. They did a good job making them both younger.
He looks so happy
Because he still had high aspirations at this stage in his life despite leaving grey matter at the very least Walt probably thought he’d get a well paying job at a university somewhere, get a more luxurious house at some point in the future and have a bigger family but then jr was born with cerebral palsy and those plans went down the drain so he settled for work at a high school to pay the bills fast and gave up on his dreams

Hey, Dr. Tim Whatley and Amy got together after breaking up with Elaine and Jerry!

You sound like a feminist that starts attacking when someone roasts a female.
I mean, that risk-taking, Heisenberg-ish attitude is on full display here, some decade or more prior. Deeffffinitely not a red flag or anything lol
I dont think it's a red flag. It's men's nature to plan for the future. What happened here is Walt settled with the house. This lead to a pattern of him settling and not living up to his potential. Thus landing him in a situation where he had no money to secure his family's future. He took the safe route his entire adult life
Just compare this to their last scene together.
“Just remember I get a cut” Oh boy I know that must have triggered Walt a bit

Fun fact, at this moment in time Hank was beating up a handcuffed criminal
People think this some starting part of a series , but who watched the series knows 😔😣😫
He wanted 3 kids before he realized he was also getting dewey.
What I could never figure out is where is the door from the interior to the garage? There is at least one scene of Walt entering the garage from the interior but that door looking from the inside doesn’t seem to exist. It should be on the wall where the 2 bedrooms are but it isn’t there. 🤔
It happens all the time tv and film. It's necessary to 'fake' architecture.
The interior is a TV set in a studio and the exterior is a real house in Albuquerque. Its floor plan doesn’t match whatsoever.
@@UV_Lightning that’s obvious. I’m just saying you would think a show as detailed as Breaking Bad would have the interior of the house match the exterior shot of the house.
What soothing music is that at the beginning?

Hal contacted the vaccum cleaner guy and met skyler while he studied chemistry
Kinda sad to see how optimistic and ambitious Walt used to be after seeing what he eventually becomes.
Skylar being 25 and Walt being 35, what Reed Richards and Sue Storm moment!
So Walter _was_ ultimately the one responsible for destroying Lahaina . . . 😳
This scene always confused me because I thought Walt was in a love triangle with Gretchen and Elliot, lost, sold his share of Gray Matter for peanuts because he didn't think it would amount to much, became a high school chemistry teacher instead and then when Gray Matter hit it big, was never able to set his ego aside to go back to Gretchen and Elliot, let bygones and bygones and at least ask for a high-paid job.
But apparently Walt did work for another lab after Gray Matter according to this scene, so we never really get an explanation as to how he went from working chemist to high school chemistry teacher.
A safe assumption is he was probably a dick to work with.
I suppose the real intention of the scene is to show Walt and Skyler were once a young couple with hopes and dreams. They bought a small house thinking it would be a starter home but decades later, they're still there.
He downgraded to becoming a regular researcher at Sandia, and when he couldn’t be the smartest person in the room there, he downgraded even further to being a high school chemistry teacher. Thats what this scene was all about. He’d rather be miserable and up at the top in his social circle rather than be a millionaire or moderately successful family man that involves associating with people on his level
I assume it was something like that but I don't like assuming. I always felt that was the biggest gap of the show - how he went from working as a chemist to working as a high school teacher. I can fill in the blanks that his ego made him difficult to work with but I also doubt his ego would have allowed him to voluntarily teach high school unless something happen. I picture a big blowout incident where he yelled at all his coworkers and got a reputation as a diva and became unemployable in chemistry - but it would have been great to get one more scene to confirm that.@@knightinthewoods9170
