The language is "Wolof" from Senegal in Africa. It is also spoken in Mauritania and Gambia. The person singing was Papa Wemba, you can get info on him here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papa_Wemba Enjoyed your reaction!
Maybe someone else answered this question but that is an electric double (twin neck) violin and the man playing it is Ravi Shankar. World renowned musician and composer. He recorded and toured with Peter, many times, over many decades. Thank you SO much for this wonderful reaction video!! This performance of this song is one my favorite things in the whole world. It feels fantastic to people discovering this concert (and Peter Gabriel) for the first time... makes me so happy!! From this same concert, I highly recommend Shaking The Tree, Washing of the Water, and Come Talk To me. Other Peter Gabriel live performances to watch/listen to are Signal to Noise with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Downside Up from the "Us" tour, which features Peter's daughter, Melanie on vocals with her father.
You were correct, part of the lyrics are sung in Wolof. On the album version it is sung by West African musician Youssou N'Dour. Peter Gabriel said that the song can be interpreted as a relationship between a man and a woman or a divine relationship between someone and his God.

Lighters. Before cell phones!
Which is why the audience is actually watching the performers, not their phones!

Yes, they were lighters. It's been traditional at rock concerts going back to at least the 70's.
Yes lighters, way before cell phone flashlights, when music and blisters on the thumb was real!..lo
Amazing performance! Who is that drummer? He's nailing it.
The drummer's name is Manu Henche. In a separate conversation, I was reminded he was ranked #57 among 100 of the 20th century's best drummer's. 👏😎👋
His name is Manu Katche
now the big question, who was better? Peter or ........Phil Collins?
I can’t say 🤔
Love them both. Would never choose
Language is Wolof
