I was in my NJROTC units Drill Team 50 years ago, also using the 1903 Springfield rifle. MAN! This brings back memories!

Our tax payer dollars hard at work. What a waste of money. These kids should be spending their time learning to sail and fight our ships, not this useless crap. STSCS (SS) USN Ret.

It's far from useless crap. It takes extreme amounts of skill and determination to learn these skills. These very sailors move on into leadership roles and typically end up doing lifelong stints in and retire at the highest ranks.

@@Mount56It's obvious you have never been in the NAVY. In my 21 years of naval service, I have never heard, " Man battle stations, set the drill team." 99.99% of sailors NEVER march again after A school, let alone waste their time learning this crap. Naval ships are EXTREMELY complex pieces of machinery. It takes years just to learn the entry level skills of any rating (job). This crap is ENTERTAINMENT and teaches the kind of discipline and leadership skills that are no longer relevant to any branch of the military service, especially the Navy. The sailors that do this tour almost always get out after their first enlistment, and the ones that stay, are two to three years behind, and advance at slower rate. They spend their entire second tour stuck in junior ranks learning the stuff they would have learned if they had spent their time learning stuff like mechanics, electronics, engineering, medical, operations, or even cooking, instead of twirling a rifle. I hope you know, the navy doesn't even use rifles in combat, well except maybe the seabees or seals. This stuff IS USELESS CRAP. It costs the navy about $40k a year in pay and expenses for one seaman, more if they are married. And on top of all that, most ships are short-handed. That manpower, and expense would be better utilized on a ship. Submarine Sonar Technician Chief Senior - United States Navy (Retired).
