I came specifically to the comments regarding this video to caution that the feeder is obviously contaminated with mold. Made me very concerned for the health of the birds. Great information, nicely done, but feeders need to be thoroughly cleaned before refilling.
I guarantee you almost every one of us has a hummingbird feeder that has mold on it. That's what happens to sugar water in the sun. And you know what? I still have a ton of hummingbirds. And I'm sure everybody else does so who cares and eat a bag of dicks.
Oh my! The feeder is so dirty. I clean my feeders every 2 or 3 days at least. If it is in cold weather i let it a little longer. To wash them, I spray vinegar and let them soak for a few minutes them i wash them throughly. I always have extra feeders so the hummingbird does not have to wait :-) mold can be fatal to those little ones. This seems to be a good video but the mold in the feeder bothers me so much that i can’t not watch it. Poor hummingbirds.
With a feeder this busy - it would be wise to have 2 feeders so that the feeder could be replaced in only a couple minutes while the other is kept in soapy water and “scrubbed” to be kept immaculate for these precious little ones.

Get 2 feeders. Get the ones where the bottoms come off to clean. I put them in d/washer. CHANGE DAILY. You will have happy birds. You dont want dead birds!

My parents have always had hummingbird feeders, so we've always had a small collection of birds over the summer months. I don't know what flowers attract them or what habitats they prefer. But I have seen them in town and in the country. Now that I think of it, most of my hummingbird viewing has been done in the proximity of feeders. I'd try asking around... you could always try a pet store/hardware store that sells feeders to see if they have some more info about hummers in your area.
We don't have the sugar (or the money) to replace the food everyday, but I do it every couple weeks or so. Is that safe? I have 4 hummers Oh, and one female won't let any other birds get near the feeder. Should I add a second one on the other side of the yard?
That would be too long between changes/cleanings to be safe for the hummers. A bag of cane sugar will last for some time if you can at least change nectar out at once if not twice a week, depending on your local temps. Placing your feeder(s) in a shady area will help also. A second feeder placed away from the first will help with the territorial behavior. GL!
You didn’t have a Ruby Throated hummingbird, they do not migrate/live on the western part of the United States. You most likely had an Anna’s or Broadtailed hummingbird. A “Ruby Throated” is an actual type of hummingbird-not to be confused with a general description of many types that are seen in the west. Ruby Throated hummingbirds only migrate east of the Mississippi River and are the only type of hummingbird seen as well
I am surprised you made a very informative video but did not see how dirty the feeder is. There is no excuse for that. You don't mention how important it is to clean the feeder every 2-3 days and fill it with fresh sugar water. You say the video was filmed at your parent's house. Please educate them about maintaining clean feeders.

It's my understanding that birds can die from any mold. I see mold (black areas) even in the hole where the birds are feeding.
Your feeder could use some serious cleaning!!
Don't worry. This feeder was thrown away several years ago and replaced with a new one.

Humming birds typically live 3-5 years, so there's a good chance all the ones in this video are dead now.

Yup. Homemade formula of sugar and water. They replace the nectar every day or so if they remember.
That is not dirt, it is black mold. Black mold and other unseen bacteria are deadly for hummingbirds.

did your parents remove the yellow flower plastic petals to dissuade bees from the feeder?
I think this model came without the plastic yellow petals, though it's also possible they fell out at some point.

That is a very dirty feeder.mold is growing inside. That is not very health for the amazing little bird. You can't be doing them any good.
