After gardening for a couple of years now I've realized in the past, these foods weren't eaten year-round like they are today. Before modern agriculture, these foods would have only been available for a short time each year, so the chances of being poisoned were slim. There wouldn't have been enough for you to hurt yourself. Today most people eat nightshades at every meal, every day, 365 days per year. That would have been impossible in the past.
Dr. Gundry Dude. Your UA-cam Videos about Nightshades have saved me. Actually cured me. I've had digestion issues, pain, IBS, bloating and constipation for 20 years. I've been to countless Dr.s and have been on all kinds of pills. I stopped eating Nightshades. ALL OF THEM. And it all went away. All of it. You deserve a Nobel Prize.
Wow, Lucas!!! We are so thrilled to hear you are feeling better after taking nightshades out of your diet. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! 🙌
I have been suffering from partial brain seizures for the past 25 years of my life. I typically have 1 seizure per month and sometimes as many as 2 times per month. My seizures have gotten more intense. After I had a day of enjoying home grown tomatoes with all 3 meals, I had a massive seizure that night. I have been 4 months without a seizure. I can't help but feel I have cured myself. Only time will tell. Maybe nightshades are truly toxic and some people simply have more of a response to the toxins.
I have never been a big fan of tomatoes or potatoes. I am pregnant and cannot eat nightshade- they give me so much acid reflux, indigestion and gas for days. In pregnancy you are super in tune with food and I never realized the toxicity in nightshades until now.
I am shocked at how everyone has always made potatoes, tomatoes, and hot peppers all out as being extremely healthy. And in reality they may not be for a lot of people. I absolutely believe I am one of those persons sensitive to nightshades. My most overt symptom is extreme anxiety hours after a nice potato dinner. But I’ve never drawn the connection until recently.
I use my Samsung health app to check how i feel 10-90 minutes after every meal. Without fail my heart rate and stress level will shoot up after eating a meal with potatoes.
Thank you Dr gundry. I have searched and searched the UA-cam channels and found you. Thank God. It's like no one knows how to explain why these plants are bad for us. Again thank you.
True, I'm allergic to Eggplant & Potatoes already .. But I notice that whenever I had lots of Cherry Tomatoes my skin goes like CRAZY I got Redness, Eczema, Itchy skin, even my lips & tongue got swollen! But I'm fine with Bell Peppers. Thanks for sharing your information :)
This video is like a parody but actually serious. 😭😂 98% of the food people eat is super toxic, I avoid all foods in general. Eating is a waste of time.
Ive been craving tomatoes recently and have been eating them at least 4/5 times a week for about a month now, I have just noticed that my eye floater have completely disappeared. The eye floaters were quite bad but I just ignored them. I think I’ll keep eating them.
I'll be sure to remove all the seeds from my potatoes before I eat them. I considered trialing not eating any nightshades for a few months to see if it magically cures my Crohn's disease but I just now discovered several people cured themselves through correcting their gut microbiome while still eating nightshades, so I'll go with the diet method that has proven to actually work for my condition rather than eliminating a food group that has been fine for thousands of years.
well potatoes and tomatoes have not been available to the whole world for thousands of years. They were regional foods only grown only on one geographic point....and only transported to the rest of the world a few hundred years ago.
Been eating eggplant since I was young. Grilled and dip it on fish sauce with tomato. Lot’s of toxic food? Whatabout when you eat out especially fast foods, all garbage. Impossible to ditch those food. It’s staple on most parts of the world.
I have eaten potatoes every day for each of the 69 years of my life with no apparent side effects. For past few yearswe have been steam cooking them. Is this as good as pressure cooking them?
Nightshade family is not for me too. Legumes, beans, peanuts, gojji, cashews, eggs, Meat, Fish, coffe, cacao and chocolate, all animal milk and cheese, especially cheese is very bad for my digestion. Organic veggies and hemp protein, walnuts, macademia and hazelnuts and berries, avocados, pomegranate and citrus fruits and everything organic. . I agree Dr. Gundry.
Thanks Dr. Gungry. Always great to hear your wisdom on the foods most people have grown up on and were taught how healthy they are. Keep em coming. Cant wait for the energy paradox.
Gogi berries I noticed bother me. Raw tomatoes do too. But I found if I boil and cook these vegetables with olive oil I tolerate them. Peppers are rough on anyone I feel for digestion and acid reflux.
Oh my.. eggplant and tomatoes are my staple food.. and for long time i have gastro problem. My doctor cant conclude why.. i think this is because of nightshades. Thanks doc for this info❤
You're welcome, Vaneza! If you would like to learn more about Dr. Gundry's philosophy, we highly recommend checking out our website at gundrymd.com/. 🙌
I was the first in my family to reject tomato in all forms as a child. It wasn't until I was told by an allergist, in my mid 30s, that I reacted negatively with the prick test.
Please post your research on how these items are bad for our health. I would love to learn more about the research because I have done my research. But the vegetables in the nightshade family are typically harmless unless you have a intolerance to such vegatables. Some of these negative side effects include gas, bloating, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea and joint pain due to inflammation. There are many factors to nightshade intolerance because every individual's digestive system is unique. However, research suggests underlying issues may be the real cause of the intolerance.

The key is to have as diverse diet as posssible. Our civilazation cultivated nightshades for centuries neglecting some other local, safer vegetables. Nightshades are so common that giving them up is a challenge
Good video. I’m afraid that’s a pretty tall order: Getting rid of grains, legumes & nightshades. I can probably let go of legumes. I don’t eat them SO much. But grains & nightshades? Ain’t happenin’! I love them too much! Will have to find another solution…
Actually what Dr. Saying is absolutely right that I have romatide and when I eaten lectins food then directly effected my joints and I will be OK when I stop these type of foods
My tomatos aren't that pest resistant, after seeing some of them being eaten by birds and bugs. Peppers are also attractive to birds. These nightshade plants are perfect for causing smokers to quit the smoking habit, particularly eggplants. I'm surprised that Black Nightshade which is a common forager's fruit item isn't mentioned in this video. I guess it's just not commonly eaten.
I know these things may not effect everyone.. it’s more for those like me that know their stomach is acting up but feel like they don’t eat that bad.. and can’t put a finger on it.. I cut nightshade veg out for a week to test out how my stomach feels and i know straight away the effect it had. I am not going to cut them out completely as they are in some of my favourite foods… But i now know what to avoid eating if I’m going out for something and want no issues 😅
I have extreme reactions to nightshade veggies. They blister my skin inside and out. Took me a long time to figure it out. Yes I stay away buy sometimes they are in something from restaurants. Tomatoes and peppers are the worse!!
Thank you. I have found reactions like this do vary with people, the major ones any way. I do react to solanines and each a bit different. I find my problem with potatoes is the skin. Perhaps many are like that, as skin is where a lot of the stay-away stuff is found and lots of forms of potato products are without skin. I avoid tomatoes. I found this out by being aware of my body's reactions. Most beans disagree with me but for some reason I can eat baked beans in dishes (without the tomato sauce). and peas ok. Total avoidance is likely best, but there are degrees of reactions both for different people and different parts of forms of the plants it seems.
I have got ankylosing spondylitis these foods are not good for me but I like tomatoes every now and then I grew some tomatoes in my backyard yeah so yummy
Isn't it true that the fully-ripened (Red in color) variety of the common variety "Green Pepper" does not have any of the 'evil' compounds you describe? Red == OK; Green Pepper == bad?

You'ld have to eat a whole green potato to actually get sick from eating potatoes. Nobody eats potatoes green with any sense, so it's mostly not an issue.
A question out my league, can you have illurgic reaction to nightshade vines, say you picked some tomados out your garden, would that cause massive inflimation reaction or rise of bloodpressure ? I don't think so usely... wouldn't be that'

I'm guessing as a layman that this explains that odd case of that one autistic kid who only ate potato chips for a while developed a kind of blindness which he recovered from after he made his meals varied and well... Ordinary... Would other food items in a meal reduce the effects of pectins?

Aftercstarting ketovore/carnivore then having meat with potatoes to come out ketosis ... i think ive just found the soirce of a lot of trouble. At 60 ive eaten a lifetime of delicious potatoes but, after yesterday, i no more, i still feel so ill. A wave of what seemed to be the flu nausea the severe diarrhoea all night, and im wrung out. I must have detoxed then reacted badly to bringing the toxin back in. X
I have such bad allergies to touch any raw nightshade, I can only eat potatoes in pressure cooked as well tomatoes. The peppers are so bad to me, even if I smell I feel sick. As a child I developed totally panic of tomatoes and peppers. I never touched them in my first years of life. A natural fear. As adult I got tested and bam, totally allergic
I am allergic to nightshades. I had paprika in a meal yesterday and ended up with a split bleeding tongue and more from it. Nightshade affects me really badly with many side effects. I have autoimmune disease but it only happens now after eating nightshade. If in doubt, give it up.
Great video, I have terrible reactions to nightshades from a mood (High anxiety/ racing thoughts) and heartburn perspective. Can you provide a little more detail on why paprika is on the ok list before I trial?
Hi there! That's a great question. Dr. Gundry would be happy to answer your question during his next Facebook Live Q&A. Be sure to follow our page for upcoming announcements and have your questions ready!

What about capsicum/bell peppers!?😓 I'm pretty sure they don't have capsaicin content at all(nit even close to hot peppers) but that seems to be listed under nightshade as well, which would be an absolute shame & depressing to remove from one's diet as it's extremely low in calories/carbs! Can that be intaken or not?
A dr. told me to avoid nightshades bc they cause inflammation in the brain, is that true? I have adhd and was advised to avoid those including citrus fruit. Is there a correlation between inflammation and consuming nightshades?

This is a complicated comment, But Dr. We have got to find a way to feed the poor without nightshade foods. I'm intolerant / and some times allergic to nightshade foods. I've been diagnosed with Gastrointestinal autoimmune syndrome. And I have a strong feeling it's because a 99% staple diet of those who live on limited income or frequent food banks. Have an abundance of nightshade foods given to them. Either it be canned or fresh. It's always tomatoes and potatoes. They are the fillers and flavors of everything. Everytime I eat a dish with tomatoes my insides hurt soo bad and then my elimination is painful. There's gotta be some kind of way to eat as a person in functional poverty?

@@GundryMDYT Thanks. I just read the article and noticed peppers are not included. Can you deseed peppers and pressure cook them as well to make them safer?
Hello Ryan! To reduce the lectin content in peppers - you may deseed and pressure cook them, however we suggest only consuming them in small quantities- avoiding if possible. Thank you!
I was just watching a man telling me that tomatos are dangerous while eating my homemade sphaggeti. If you cook tomatoes do the toxins go away or not?😕
Hi there, thank you for reaching out! Tomatoes are FULL of lectins, but if you're able to prepare them without the skins and seeds, that removes the lectins. 🙏
Tomatoes are not approved by Dr. Gundry, and are on his list of “forbidden foods”. However, if you must eat tomatoes, be sure to skin them and remove all seeds to avoid as many harmful lectins as possible. Thank you!

Am I the only one who has a hard time believing that foods that have been eaten for thousands of years are now unsafe?
You have a hard time believing people who eat spicy foods suffer from allergies, acid reflex, and bloating almost immediately?
Not technically unsafe. But sensitive for some groups. I.e auto immune diseases
I have never been a big fan of tomatoes or potatoes. I am pregnant and cannot eat nightshade- they give me so much acid reflux, indigestion and gas for days. In pregnancy you are super in tune with food and I never realized the toxicity in nightshades until now.
This is the first time i head this and i have been eating these all my life with no problem.

A question out my league, can you have illurgic reaction to nightshade vines, say you picked some tomados out your garden, would that cause massive inflimation reaction or rise of bloodpressure ? I don't think so usely... wouldn't be that'

5:26 and yet they decided to season sweet potato with paprika....
Thank you Doctor Gundry.
I heard that microwaving is the same as pressure cooking potatoes. So, I wonder if it does the same to tomatoes

I just bought a sack of deadly potatoes, goodbye world
I'm guessing as a layman that this explains that odd case of that one autistic kid who only ate potato chips for a while developed a kind of blindness which he recovered from after he made his meals varied and well...

Thanks for your question. We'll consider covering this in a future video with Dr. Gundry!
Not giving up peppers or potatoes for nun lol
I’m Italian and I’m allergic to eggplant.
How about silverleaf nightshade? Can I pressure cook its berries and eat them?
Hi there! Pressure cooking is a fantastic way to reduce lectins in lectin-rich foods. We dive a little deeper into this topic over on our blog. You can read more about it here: gundrymd.com/pressure-cooking-healthy-kill-nutrients/. Thank you!
I was getting determined to avoid nightshade, but no HOT PEPPER? :-( Wow, that's gonna be difficult..

RIP.....
So is homemade tomato sauce also bad for you?
Thanks for your question. We'll consider covering this in a future video with Dr. Gundry!
What about capsicum/bell peppers!?😓
I'm pretty sure they don't have capsaicin content at all(nit even close to hot peppers) but that seems to be listed under nightshade as well, which would be an absolute shame & depressing to remove from one's diet as it's extremely low in calories/carbs!
Can that be intaken or not?

Yes ! This is the part that just made me throw my hands up. I eat peppers almost every day. This is sad for me too.
I been eating potatoes since I was 10 years old. I have been overweight for the same amount of time.
I am highly allergic to all kinds og peppers therefor i never eat them
A dr. told me to avoid nightshades bc they cause inflammation in the brain, is that true? I have adhd and was advised to avoid those including citrus fruit. Is there a correlation between inflammation and consuming nightshades?

Butter is not Gundry approved. Thank you!
tomatoes -- Would they be okay to eat if they are cooked thoroughly on the pan but not pressure cooked?
Hello Sharen, Dr. Gundry has a blog about tomatoes we think may be helpful, link: gundrymd.com/deseed-tomatoes/
What about the juices of these, like Goji Berries?

This is a complicated comment,
But Dr.

Any tips on making lectin free salsa?
Please check out our blog post online at gundrymd.com/deseed-tomatoes/ for more information and tips!
Thank you!
Couldnt resist at potato.
Is canned tomato paste okay since in the canning process it is cooked???
Tomatoes are not approved by Dr. Gundry, and are on his list of “forbidden foods”. However, if you must eat tomatoes, be sure to skin them and remove all seeds to avoid as many harmful lectins as possible. Thank you!
Now I know what not to eat.... what do I eat?!
Thank you for the information.
