I'm so excited you have this video out John. I've been following your videos and advice for more than 10 yrs now and finally decided to get a purple tree collard. It comes this week. I can't wait!! Thanks for this video. I could only afford one cutting and now I can make sure we have as many as need. God bless and 💜 happy growing 💜

Son of a gun I actually never thought of rooting kole crop plants before. I guess it's because I always lived in such a bone chilling snowy northern area where everything drops dead for 6 months of the year. Nice demo and explanation John. Thank you! :)

They love the cold weather up in SF, Calif. I harvested a bunch a day after a ~36 degree night. Best greens ever.

They would probably do ok in your voo doo garden. They can get quite tall and bushy. I eat the leaves right off the plants when the weather is cool and they are sweet. Msg me if you would like some cuttings.

I had to chop my two 10 foot tree kale in half. Now it's got tons of branches/shoots coming out of it. It's a wild tree. I'm in So Cal and it does fantastic growing in 5 gal Home Depot buckets!

Yeah, the Voodoo garden in winter and outside during warm months... I've heard they can get really large in containers. The only ones I have are in containers, but that's just 'cause I just got them in September from Bountiful Gardens and they said not to disturb them for several months once planted in pots so the roots will have time to grow. One is magnificent and the other two...... well, they're alive is all I can say. They've been fine outside but I did put them in the greenhouse the night it dropped into the low 20's. The heater didn't work that night so the banana plants turned TOTALLY black, but the tree collards looked like they LOVED it!

Perfect timing, was just about to do this. Fyi northern gardeners, take cuttings in late summer and leave outside till fall. They will grow all winter and be perfect size and first crop in the spring.

Can't wait for your update and to see your success!
Yesterday, I was cleaning out a raised bed and realized that, after years of attempts, I had a boysenberry going crazy. I ended up getting 9 new plants. Like you, I"m hoping they will 'take'. In the past, I have had troubles growing berries; so I know this particular plant must be better adapted to my climate. Hoping... hoping..... hoping.
Happy Gardening! And may God bless you and your gardening with a great 2015!

I have a starter purple tree collard plant growing it's about 8-10" tall right now with 3 or 4 leaves on it. I put it in my brand new greenhouse I just finished building to protect it from these really cold temperatures we are about to have here in Texas. I have a corner fence post I want to plant it next to this spring, and just as soon as it takes off growing I want to take cuttings for more plants. I am so excited. I plan to start germinating some Moringa seeds when I start my tomato and peppers here soon. I want these trees growing all over my property also. I appreciate your videos thnx for sharing.

+G'Maw's Garden my tree collard is about 7ft tall now and growing straight up no side shoots yet. I guess I should pinch the top out and propagate it like you did here, and that will encourage more side shoots. thnx John.

Well done. I'm just starting, have a couple of tips from a friend. Left them in a hot car for 5 hours unfortunately before planting in ~2 quart pots to root. The car smelled great but the cuttings were pretty wilted. Placed them in water a day or two and then into the small containers. One is doing OK, the other died. Am very soon going to plant the good one in a largish galvanized tub. Hope it works. Am in mild climate.?
A heads up. My one good rooting as-yet-unplanted cutting was getting little holes in the leaves. Close inspection revealed little caterpillars and some unhatched eggs on the bottoms of the leaves. I picked off around a dozen caterpillars over several days. They are very likely from cabbage butterflies, which are very very common around here and are known to lay their eggs on brasiccas, and of course, purple tree collards are in that group of plants. I did some searching on the problem. Obviously, if I'm getting a devastating infestation at this early juncture, the look out for my tree collard project isn't good if my only defense is picking off the caterpillars and eggs! The answer found online is to apply Bt. It's a bacteria that won't harm mammals but will infect any caterpillar feeding on plants sprayed with it. The caterpillars stop eating almost immediately and die within a few days. I bought an 8 oz. container of Bt and will be spraying on my tree collards at intervals and expect this to solve my problem. I haven't seen discussion online of this yet concerning tree collards, but figure it's certainly a widespread problem, cabbage butterflies being so common.

Thanks for the video John, it's very informative. :) I ordered a dozen purple tree collard cuttings online and they arrived today. Turns out the seller sent me 6 extras so I have 18 total. My garden isn't that big so if most of them take root I don't know where i'm going to put all these collards. lol.

Unfortunately we don't have tree collards in Australia and the fact that they don't grow true from seed is a real problem as we can't get cuttings through customs even if they did survive the trip. Are there any fellow Aussies who have managed to source any through whatever means? I would be most grateful to receive a cutting or two.
Great video in any case John, cheers.

Is a green tree collard any different. I have a similar plant, its 2 years old. But instead of having thin stems and palm sized purple leaves. It has a pretty thick stem, and can grow Frisbee sized leaves. The leaves turn purpleish when it gets cold as well, but regularly they are green. It looks exactly like the regular collard greens but I have 1 that's 7 ft tall. Stems are green as well.

Pay special attention on excessively hot days because I live in San Francisco and when it get only 80 degrees it will quickly wilt. San Fran's avg Temps are about 60 - 75 degrees year around minus winter (avg. 40 - 55~60). They love the cold and taste the best after a frost.
