Wow that's amazing amd I'm sl jealous. Unfortunately for me as a 45 year old i discovered bread. I absolutely love thier music. Now I'm 51 going on 52 and I love thier music more.
Gates, Griffin “and company”? You mean Mike Botts and Larry Knechtel? Surely Mike and Larry deserve their names on the billboard as well - they were both accomplished world class musicians both in and outside of Bread.
They broke up for good shortly after this-one of the greatest bands ever- Bread was every guys secret band they listened to when their buddies weren't around-I wore out greatest hits volume 1 and 2-best chill out band of all time David Gates voice is one of the best ever
As I;ve said many times, I don't agree about Gates (though calling him a twit was taking it too far, I s'pose.) Kinda wonder if he didn't end up on the top of the pile of this amazing collection of musicians simply by virtue of his boyish looks and wholesome charm. Maybe dads thought he looked like you could trust him with your daughter, I don't know. Little girls would've swooned over him. The others looked too much like grown-up men. Anyhow, I didn't know what any of them looked like until long after the 70s ended -- I never watched "Midnight Special" or god forbid, "Captain and Tennille." I only heard them on the radio.
They actually broke up back in 1973. This was an attempted reunion (1976). D Gates and Bread (without J Griffin) continued tours and TV shows through 1979.
@@usmc-veteran73-77 What a sacrifice. I agree, all for the 70’s. Nothing can compare to that youthful generation, but with a very different “feel” than what life has become. Time machine dreams.
@@robertvillarreal4525 yes the music of the 70s was great. I was in the United States Marine Corps 4 years of the 70s, from 1973 to 1977. Boy did I listen to a lot of music. I agree, though the sound of Bread always manages to transport me back to that world where I feel I’d rather not leave, to again seize the moment that’s been presented there once before, with the music of Bread carrying through. Here’s to the seventies- !
Jimmy had it all...all four guys were handsome, but Jimmy was gorgeous! He never had a bad hair day in his life and he never met a camera that didn't love him. :-) Thanks Malc, for so many great videos. I've ordered your book and can't wait to get it sometime this summer. Take care and God bless.
Miming to the record, which was extremely common on these types of shows in the 60's 70's 80's.... The Midnight Special has live performances, as did In Concert and Saturday Night Live back in the day.
@@davidcabral3805Some people never are able to have better times than they had in their youth. It's a common theme in film. Especially the greatest tv show ever, twilight zone. That's because it's genius creator Rod Serling had an overwhelming desire to return to his childhood. Watch the 16 millimeter shine. Kick the can. And the autobiographical Walking distance which even takes place in Serlings home town. So if America's greatest short story writer could dream and long for the innocence and magical time of his youth, try to understand posters on here wanting those times back too. One day, you might experience the same feelings. However, listen to the end of walking distance. The protagonist gets advice from his dad that says what you did to the poster. It referenced popcorn and cotton candy. If those were your intentions, then you gave good hearted advice.
In my opinion, Jimmy was the better singer and better songwriter...but Gates had the label connection and the juice as producer to decide what became the A side of the singles, which was what got radio play. And since Bread was much more a singles band than a band that sold tons of albums, those A-sides were important. I had the chance to get to know Jimmy from opening for Bread in 1972. His solo album in 1973, Breakin' Up Is Easy on Polydor Records, was the best album Bread never made. Leland Sklar, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Mike Iseberg and Jim Horn were among the amazing musicians that played on it, and I learned a ton about songwriting from Jimmy. I miss him greatly, as well as Mike Botts and Larry Knechtel.
Easier to lip sync back then. They were insured a perfect sounding performance. Glen Campbell shoe was live and David was on it doing a duet with Glen. Check it out!!
Esa melodía me recuerda los años del colegio, fue una época maravillosa donde se respiraba amor, The Bread eran excelentes, gracias por compartir tan maravillosa canción. Saludos desde Costa Rica.
I’m still “lost without ‘her’ love” but it’s been so long, I’ve trimmed my sails, so that the ship rocks gently against the north winds. “London Bridge.” Nothing like that timeless song. Check it out!
robert villarreal London Bridge was their very first...before Make it with You...I was in radio then, and remember the song, but wasn't very big...they were one of my fav's... I loved playing "If" on the air back in 1971...
Awesome, man. Miss the “Soft seventies” and a more centered world, in spite of some crazies. “IF” always took care of life’s ups & downs. So we’re here. Thence. ✌️
Love Bread my whole life, especially the songs James Griffin sang on (Dream Lady!) but as many 70's variety shows would do back then, I'm certain this was lip sync. I mean it's great seeing the band together and "performing" but I know the intonation on that guitar solo like the back of my hand and, while James is an excellent musician, I'm very doubtful that this was "live". Still, always good to see them on stage. There seems to be so little footage of them in concert.
Can you site any evidence of that? Interviews, articles, etc.? For the most part Bread was the voice of Gates. Seems more like the problem was Griffin's jealousy of that situation.
❤ Whenever David introduced the band members it was always full of glowing praise and admiration Jimmy was special he had lead guitar and back ups sang some of his own not many it was just the way it was I think David penned all of their top 100s - David was a gentleman when interviewed Absolute class act - but hey he was the Lead and if he hadnt been it would have been Toast not Bread ❤
I was in the audience for the taping of this show that night. I was in awe watching Bread perform. I was ateenager back then.

Loved this band and David was so special. I watched a pretty recent video of him and he looks better than ever and still sounds the same.
David was a good singer but Jimmy Griffin was fabulous as well. Wish they would have put more of his songs on singles.
Which is amazing considering both volumes were CDs. 😁

My big sister had albums of Bread playing in her bedroom growing up. Their music touched my heart. For me, this song is their masterpiece!
“All I want is just the way it used to be”!

I've always loved Bread and Captain and Tennille!Still do!
Tenille is a real 🤡. As soon as the Captain got ill, she divorced him.
David Gates, James Griffin and the rest of bread made music so beautiful together. It's not the same without James or David.

R.I.P. Mike Botts, Larry Knetchel, and the other member of Bread, and Roy Clark, Natilie Cole, George Burns, Roy Clark and Darryl Dragon.

what kind of guitar is JG playing?
+clay523 It's his own specially designed and hand carved 'Griffin' guitar. You can check out a closer image at www.carverdoug.com/guitars.html
+Malc2311 thanks for the info. watched the video many times trying to get a better look. the guitars on the link are spectacular👍
Natalie Cole later said that the producers paid her in pure street level cocaine
Lip synching should just be made illegal. It's insulting.
It's been going on forever
David Gates is the greatest.
Bread seemed to always lip sinc and fake play the instruments to the studio recorded version on the TV shows. Play it live or don't play it at all.
So Gates and Griffin smiling at each other here--is it just bs for the cameras?
I love Bread... I love David Gates! Forever! ❤💞❤💞
Branner : Sadly, most likely!
Yep...lots of inner turmoil in the band.
The dude announcing bread is on something a little stronger than panadol, dare i say.
LOL! Yet another pubescent dimwit clueless as to who "the dude" was....
They're giggling because their lip syncing sucks lol
David Gates was just too narcissistic to know how to involve the other three. His ego killed the band....
Can you site any evidence of that? Interviews, articles, etc.? For the most part Bread was the voice of Gates. Seems more like the problem was Griffin's jealousy of that situation.
Well I'm not sure about that. I think they stayed together for about 10 years, which is a pretty good run.
