      @@DavinDesborough Thanks. Job done. I split the halves of the engine and it was packed full of crud which I dremeled out. The ignitor was actually working so I left it in. The gas jet was plugged up so I took that apart and cleaned it out. For some reason the propane tank valve didn't release so I switched tanks and this one was fine. I used deoxit on all the electrical contacts to keep corrosion down & Put a strip of tape over each of the four case screw holes as mud dobbers had packed the slots with crud. When reassembled it started in a very few minutes.
      After seeing how it's done I'll just do a cleaning every winter and have it good as new for each spring. Thanks again!

    Thanks for taking the time to publish this video. I had mine mostly apart and determined I needed a new igniter (which was also the error code). Your video gave me the confidence to fully disassemble, clean and inspect. I found the inside of the chamber corroded and the drain plugged, so I got it all cleaned up. I also bought some 8-32 nylon screws (from an electronics supplier) to hold the thermistor in place (which I found with the head broken off). It’s all back together and running fine. Note that I have an old Liberty model, where the igniter is soldered directly into the circuit board, so I cut the plug off the new unit and soldered it in.

      @@DavinDesborough checklist:
      -heater is glowing
      -solenoid is activating
      -solenoid gas valve is really clean
      -thermistor is reading ~150K ohms in room temp, ~30K ohms when heating with a jet torch for a bit - seems reasonable (running resistance should be around 5K ohms..?)
      -propane is coming out(cannot light it with jet torch though, too high flow for that?).
      Have you taken apart your gas jet? Does it have any other parts inside it besides the jet itself and a "copper mesh" - nothing under the mesh? Former models used to have some channeling made with a screw with a "mushroom" looking part that restricted the gas flow or something like that. The screw used to have a groove to be opened with a flathead screwdriver.
      I only get the fast flashing red ledalthough everything looks good, only the gas flow is suspicious - although it looks exactly the same as yours when you light it up.

    • @DavinDesborough
      @DavinDesborough  3 роки тому +2

      @@iikkakonola I have separated the jet from the mesh and there was nothing in there, or I didn't notice it if there was. If you try running it with the cover off, does the metal get appreciably hotter? Is so, then you have ignition, but it isn't getting the right signal from the thermistor. I'll need to change the tank on mine soon, and I'll try to get some readings from the thermistor when I do so we have something to compare.

    Hi, I did a complete service on my Mosquito Magnet patriot Plus today. Your video has been very helpful. Thank you very much. I have a suggstion. In the back of the fire chamber t is a spring with an opening on each side. Use a flat screwdriver on each side and press out the spring. Best way to clean the chamber is to disassemble it frrom the chamber and then you are able to take all filters out. Clean the chamber for carbon, use a brush to clean the ffilters and clean the wall inside the chamber for carbon build up. Inside it used to build up a lot of carbon. I took out at least 100 gram carbon. Now my Mosquito Magnet Patriot is working like a charm.

    Thank you for making this video. I was having trouble finding one that showed the combuster being disassembled. Mine seems to be functioning fine but not catching any mosquitoes. Mosquito Magnet suggested taking it apart and cleaning it. They didn't mention corrosion but obviously that's probably what my problem is. I just wanted to see how much of a hassle it was going to be. Thank you also for not editing out the part when you discovered the connector had come undone. If it did come undone while you were working on it then it'll probably happen to me too. I'll now know to be watching out for it. Two thumbs up for a great video!!!

    • @DavinDesborough

      Thanks! I would recommend just taking out and cleaning the thermistor first. I think corrosion building up on that can effective keep the unit shut down by not letting the sensor get hot enough in the time allotted for startup. If the plastic screw breaks when you try to remove it, use high-temp silicone (eg for engines) to stick the thermistor back in. Just use it sparingly. Good luck!

I let it run for two days and only caught five mosquitoes. All the screens look clean from the outside. That's why the Rep suggested taking it apart, including the combuster. I'm guessing the thermistor should be okay or I wouldn't get a solid red light. I'll let you know what I find when I have a chance to open it up. It's been in in storage for a long time so I wouldn't be surprised if it has a mouse nest inside the housing. Thanks again for the video, it's appreciated.

    Thank you for your video. I really appreciate it. When I first purchased this machine it worked just like you stated. The second year of operation was less reliable and required CO2 cartridges and a ridiculously expensive CO2 cartridge attachment to clean out the propane burning unit. From this point on the operation was sporadic and VERY frustrating. I also found that the mosquito magnet CO2 cartridges where expensive to purchase and it was suggested that every time I swapped out the propane tank, I was required to use a CO2 cartridge to clean out the working parts. I did this as per Mosquito Magnet instructions. All in all it cost me about $100 to $150 to run for the first season. This expense excludes the purchase of above mentioned equipment ie the cartridges and attachment. In year 3 (this year) I fired up my mosquito magnet and spent an entire day trying to get it running. As the warranty on this useless machine had expired after the first year I had no issue opening it up. After watching a few UA-cam videos I diagnosed a problematic "Thermistor" I believe this temperature probe regulates the internal temperature of the mosquito magnet and keeps it running. I went online to purchase a replacement part and found that there are no available parts for the mosquito magnet. The only item they allow to be sold online is the igniter part (on ebay) I called the mosquito magnet service people and was rudely informed that they do not have part numbers or are able to send me any parts at all. I was referred to a service center in Canada. Although Mosquito Magnet worked well for a year and caught basket loads of mosquito's the subsequent years year of operation were terrible. I paid $400 for something that has a shelf life of approximately a year to two years max. There is absolutely no customer service or parts available. I WOULD NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Its finicky and expensive to run! I will be posting this to other mosquito magnet youtube videos sites in order to warn other people of this gimmick. If anybody wants to purchase my broken mosquito magnet and resides in Ontario please let me know and maybe I'll be able to re coop some lost money:)

      Richard W's comment matches my experience almost exactly. I will say, that first year, it was unbelievable how many mosquitoes the unit caught. I was very impressed. Since I bought it in late spring, my warranty was still valid when it failed to start the next spring. I spent the second summer shipping the unit back and forth to Mosquito Magnet "for free". All summer...there is a new shorter warranty period when they send it back to you, but it didn't matter. I would literally get it back, follow the startup directions to a tee and watch that fast blinking red light after multiple attempts. Another trip to the UPS store....all summer and fall. I swear I think they just slapped a new label on it and sent right back to me each time. In the fall of the second summer I just gave up and decided to fix it myself. Here I am at the start of year 3. I've done everything you did prior to watching this video and have determined that it is the thermistor. If not, it's the circuit board. I was hoping to find a company for a replacement thermistor. If it's the circuit board I'm screwed. Mosquito Magnet would never sell you one of those.
      It's a one year product folks. Don't take my word for it. Just do a little searching. If your handy, you bought a yearly task and likely some part replacements. If your not, budget for a new unit each year. Does anyone know of a reliable unit in competition with Mosquito Magnet?

    Davin, outstanding video! Thanks so much for what you've done here. This trap kills bugs like nothing else, when it's working; so it's definitely worth learning how to do good upkeep on it.
    I've had my trap for 3-4 years (**), and had to send it back three times for maintenance. (Last time, they sent me a replacement, refurbished unit.) Now, a year after the replacement, mine is down again. Very finicky device.
    But with your video, I have plenty of hope that I can repair it myself. Going to give it a shot this week.
    I've already taken out and cleaned the nozzle -- mine was black on the "filter" end with carbon buildup. I cleaned it pretty well with rubbing alcohol, and the quick clear cartridge seems to flow freely through it. But in the meantime, I noticed that it's very hard to find out what are the correct part numbers for replacement parts. Do you have a list of them? Or advice on how to identify them? I haven't found good resources. If you are able, I think it would be great to post a list of the most obvious parts: the nozzle, the thermister, the solenoid/valve... anything else?

    • @DavinDesborough
      @DavinDesborough  4 роки тому

      First off, thank you and I wish you luck! As for replacement parts, that is indeed tough. MM seems to have tight control over them and limits them to dealers. You can find some things on ebay. The only part I have had to replace is an igniter, which you can find there. MY advice is to watch local listings or even keep an eye out on trash day as people tend to get fed up with these devices and get rid of them. If you are lucky, you could get another unit for free or cheap and use it for parts (or fix it up and have 2).

      This is the the bad side of the machine for sure. Is the machine getting warm at all during the tail end of the startup cycle? If so, then you have combustion and there is something wrong in the temp sensor. If it stays cold, then I would go back to the gas jet and soak it in some carb cleaner or something to make sure it isn't clogged. Best of luck!

      Sorry for the late response. You won't be able to order one as the company does not sell parts to the public. I can not find my purchase from way back when. I have looked around and can not find anything either. Basically, you would just need to buy a bare thermistor and put it in. I need to take one apart again and try to determine what thermistor is being used (resistance/temperature). That said, have you tested yours with a multimeter? If you heat it up and the voltage changes, it is probably OK. I will point you to this video: ua-cam.com/video/60F9IkjqUVE/v-deo.html. I think his idea of securing it with a metal screw is a good one. It would help to bring more heat to the thermistor. the only down side would be the possibly of corrosion between dissimilar metals.

    Very good video should there be a need to take this apart! I have recently purchased the same machine and I was surprised how low the vacuum was. To a point where I thought it must be broken. Unfortunately the whole of internet has not been able to answer my question. Should I feel any suction if I put my hand in front of the funnel?

    • @DavinDesborough
      @DavinDesborough  Рік тому

      There should be some air moving, but not not a strong vacuum. Apparently, mosquitos have a natural reaction to fly up when startled or trying to escape. That puts them right into the bell and they ride the airflow into the basket.
      Just to be sure, check that the door to the basket is fully closed or that will cause airflow issues.

  • @Hellsong89
    @Hellsong89 Рік тому

    Side note for who it concerns, those igniters are EXTREMELY easy to break. Had torpedo heater that i was trying to fix and igniter was bit stuck, got it out but it snapped in process. Then tried to measure what kind of voltage board puts out, but moment i turn it on, mosfet exploded so it needs to have load on it, so consider this when trying to repair. In this case its low voltage while mine was 230v heater.
    edit: got mine most likely fixed solenoid seemed to be bit stiff from storage, needed to take it apart. On 2013 model getting the peace sit properly is a pain and if i recall right you should never put grease on to help it slide, least certain types of grease. There should be products that works with natural gas though. I just carefully push it in place with parrot pliers being careful not to damage the O-ring. Cleaned the thermocouple and it seems to work now, gotta do more testing since i got this unit for free from E-waste pile. Also when you need to replace the gas line, see how it sits in place and when putting new one in place check it sits properly, mine got new line in old ends and sleeve didnt go trough the hole being bit larger so needed to remove some plastic to get it sit right. Otherwise the top wont sit properly same with unit internals and there is air flow issues. Mind replacing and sealing the airways so it can properly suck mosquitos in.

    I have a Patriot model; after checking critical components like igniter and thermistor, finally down to gas solenoid valve; I injected 12 volts into its input wiring and heard a click, so assume it works. Looks like no 12 volts coming from board, and no continuity from board solder joints to output pins (for solenoid activation) so assuming corrosion on solder joints is the problem. This unit has been outside in the rain for ten years, and not sure how they would expect the electronics to function in such a harsh environment. Hope I am on the right track; will desolder and re-solder the board solder joints next.

    • @DavinDesborough
      @DavinDesborough  3 роки тому

      What I think often happens is that the thermistor gets old or the probe is too covered in corrosion. Either way, the machines does not read the proper resistance and does not think it has started. What I like to do it try to run it. If it lights, the metal of the heat exchanger will warm up fairly fast. If you feel that warmth and then it still shuts off, it must be the thermistor (or the wiring related to it). I hope you got it working again. Sorry it took so long to respond.

I believe it's not actually igniting the propane. I don't really feel warmth at the front nozzle. Do you feel warmth at the front where the fan is sucking in? I'm thinking possibly the ignitor is weak and not igniting the propane? I can definitely smell the propane and the ignitor is definitely glowing completely red. It's just not wanting to run. I can't really feel any heat. Any advice? Do u think the ignitor is just too weak to ignite the propane?

    • @DavinDesborough
      @DavinDesborough  2 місяці тому

      If it is glowing red, I would think it is hot enough, but I suppose that is possible. One thing to try to start it with the plastic off. The metal will absolutely be warm to the touch if it is running. You said you cleaned everything, but have you tried blowing out the catalytic converter (the tube inside the metal housing at 13:53)? If that is clogged, or not really reacting due to contaminates, it could be hampering the unit from getting hot enough. These are absolutely finicky machines, which is unfortunate given how effective they are when working. Good luck and feel free to send updates or further questions!

      @@DavinDesborough Yes I have tried starting with the plastic off and on. Ive tried feeling the metal housing and I dont really feel any heat at all. It never gets to the solid red light though. So something is not allowing it to start. It doesnt seem like the propane is igniting, or its not staying lit long enough to feel heat. Maybe the thermister is shutting it down pretty fast before it heats up? I was checking the ohm resistance on my thermister and it was at like 250 k ohm I believe . Is that normal? Do you know what your ohm reading is on your working thermister? Yes I did take apart the metal housing and cleaned up the cata converter. I didnt see any blockages or debris in there. I blew it out but not with a compressor, just with my mouth. I scrubbed the metal parts a bit as there were some build up but not much. To give you an idea, my thermister was quite clean when I pulled it out, nothing like yours was, so the internals werent very dirty. I have no idea why its not starting, everything looks good, the igniter lights up, the propane flows, the thermister "works" and it registers heat. I dont really know if maybe the resistance is too high and not meeting the requirements, or maybe the igniter is not getting hot enough to ignite the propane. I am stumped... I will do some tests on the thermistor when I take it apart this spring. I believe they are generally specified at 25 Celsius (so roughly room temperature) and 250k would be a reasonable value. I would also measure resistance at the pads on the back of the connector where the thermistor plugs in. The value may be a bit different as it will be in circuit, but should be in the same general range. While there, look for any corrosion on the board, especially around the solder pads of any of the chips. Clean with isopropyl alcohol if you see any grunge.

      If it will always run for about 5 hours and then stop with a low battery warning, then I will have to guess that the thermoelectric generator (TEG) is not supplying power back to the machine. That would mean it is running on only batteries, which quick run out. If you pause my Independence video at about 13:32 (ua-cam.com/video/VzFwGImwR5k/v-deo.html), you can see the TEG on the large heatsink in my right hand. I assume the Executive will have something similar. With all that said, all I can think to do would be to try and measure the voltage it is sending when the unit is running and hot. I don't know what the voltage is supposed to be or where you would get a new one. I mean, you can get one from Amazon (amzn.to/43kv0PD), but I don't know what the right size or voltage would be. It is going to take some time for me to test this out, but I'll write back when I do.

    Mine doesn't even power up. No red light whatsoever. Anyone know why?

      Sorry, this was caught in the UA-cam spam filter. I would try to measure the voltage at the end of the cable to make sure the power supply brick is still working. If that is good, then you have something potentially more serious wrong inside the device. It would take some careful probing with a multimeter to see where voltage is flowing and what might be dead. Hopefully it is just the power supply.

      @@DavinDesborough I found out that it was the power supply thanks.

    I did every test you did in this video. Evrything has the same outcome as yours. The insides actually aren't as bad as this one in the video. It gets to the end of the 15 minutes time and blinks fast again. I don't get it.

      Leave the top off of it and try starting it. Does the metal warm up? If so, it is starting fine, but not detecting the heat. Sand the metal probe to get all corrosion off of it. If that still does not help, check to be sure the wire has not come loose at the circuit board

    Hey Dave thank you for all your wonderful videos about the mosquito magnet. Since I've watched your videos I've decided not to get the mosquito magnet because it looks like a piece of junk that always needs work and it cost too much money. There's got to be better alternatives than this mosquito magnet that always cost a lot of money he always breaks down no thank you

      I wanted to put a truthful owners experience out there. When they work, they work great. But they take work to keep running. The main reason I stick with it is that it is very selective and only catches mosquitos. Other traps seem to capture too many bug species. In any case, I am glad they helped you to form an opinion, good, bad or otherwise.

    This unit works well but is such a bad design for durability. Worked great first year, put it away in basement for Winter, brought out the following year and would not ignite. Sent back under warranty, by the time I got it back Mosquito season was over and didnt get much use out of it so back in storage it goes. Took it out to fire it up last week and again wont ignite. Piece of shit.

      They are fiddly for sure. I usually need to clean mine out and sand off the thermistor probe at the start of the season to get it to stay running. Had they invested a bit more into parts and design, they would be fabulous.
