Surprised you didn't touch on Gi-Hun's willingness to let people die for the uprising. I imagine it will have a huge plot significance as, in a way, even someone as heroic as him has a willingness to treat human life as disposable so long as it suits his goals.
It's definitely significant, but I felt it was too character specific for an overall breakdown video. I'll cover it either in a video on Gi-hun or after the third season when the theme is fully fleshed out.
@@GenerationOchi aha just seen this after commenting. personally i think the way the system is wearing him down, turning peole disposable and the system is continuing to toxically adapt and ingest him is a key part of the story. The key message I'm taking from the squid game is that no-one is bigger than the system in which the game exists. even the elites. a VIP even got murdered at the last one and the game rolls on. It will be a raising of collective consciousness that bring downs the system. i was hoping that they wouldn't even go back to the games in season 2 - the system won't be changed by blowing up the island and killing a few people.
To me, Gi-Hun knew they were all dead when the first vote finished. They would never leave these games from that point. Everyone there was dead, but one winner. He decided it's worth sacrificing some for saving everyone, just like the trolley problem. Either 1 survives, or he risks saving 90% of them
@Alexander-tw2kw He knowingly decided not to save people when he and his group had the capability of saving those people. And if this was all about ending the current game, then the path of least resistance would be taking out a handful of those that voted to stay to guarantee that more people who voted to leave would live long enough to escape.
i think another part of the manipulation by the gamemasters that tricks people into thinking the game is fair, when in reality it's not, is the fact that each person votes on if the game should end for everyone. If the game was structured in a more fair way, people could choose to back out for themselves, which would be complete choice, rather than an illusion of choice. This is done to make the game more interesting for the elites, and incite conflict within the game's participants, when in reality, they'd be much happier fighting together against the system
Exactly. There’s no reason someone choosing to leave voluntarily on an individual basis can’t contribute to the money pile much the same way as being killed does except for the fact the game masters and elites like watching the “rats” die while stumbling through the maze. The fact everyone doesn’t get to choose for themselves further reflects the unfairness of society. People can’t opt out of the system as is, even if they wanted to, except by death - much like the games. You can’t choose to value your own life above money - they won’t let you. The folks that to vote to stay are both victims of the structures of society but also re-enforcers - much the same way downtrodden folks will still argue that “if you just work hard enough you’ll succeed” and therefore social reforms to help those with less are often voted against (in my American perspective to be clear).
IMO it's really emphasized by the amount of votes they have this season. They didn't have as many last season and the "special game" was clearly manufactured by the game. Here, it's a consequence of the tension they slowly helped build... And that's not only unfair -why aren't the participants aware that it's part of the game?- but cruel the same way they pretend to give the players choices. It highlights the manipulative nature Season 2 is focusing on. Blame shifting, DARVO (Defend Argue Reverse Victim and Offender), gaslighting, the whole nine yards to get the players exactly where they want them to be. The show does that by now focusing less on the spectacle and tragedy and more on the inner workings of Squid Game which is a great angle to take for a second season. We got the show and now a critique of the system!
just watched the Minyeo analysis video and really enjoyed your break down of her character; incredibly insightful, well thought out and presented in a great way, while always having empathy for the character. i appreciated it a lot, so i’m glad to see some more Squid Game breakdowns from you bc it’s an impressive mixture of logic and emotion, which, imo, is important for understanding media. thank you for making these :-)
Korean society (among many others) have a very pessimistic view of themselves, which I think is reflected a lot in their stories. You can call seasons 2-3 Gi-hun's revenge arc, but many Korean revenge films regardless of if the protagonist "wins" still have very pessimistic undertones, which makes me cautious of where Gi-hun's story will end up. There have been talks about spin-offs set in different countries. If that happens I think France would make a very interesting choice considering their history.
Love your review of this show. while other Hollywood comic book movie enjoyers complain about cliffhanger, you are able to see deeper meaning of this masterpiece. Thank you for your analysis.
OMG - watched my first video of you...two min ago while looking for some AIBL2 insight. Glad you switched up the look! Also, seems like you enjoy buffalo.
Gi-hun is the brave hero yes but he to does fall or more so stumble slightly into the Evil and Start to become corrupted as He sacrifies The X's for a Gamble a chance to topple over the stystem but he fails due to Foul play, and Gi-hun sacrificing the X's Proves the front man right To himself atleast, thus making In-ho More steadfast in his beliefs and also that Gi-hun is succoming to The darkness In his soul as yes sacrifice is needed to do the gamble of a plan that in the end failed and would have most likely failed either way but we dont know that, but Gi-hun once believe every life was Equal in value yet he chose to disregaurd that, which could be argued as right because the needs of few Do not out weigh the needs of the Many, but at the same time it can also be argued that Every life is precious and should be saved If they can be saved, gi-hun has changed Ever so slowly and slightly but Allas there still a change in his phylosphy that makes him closer to Becoming like in-ho, and so i believe In-ho wants Gi-hun to become the front man At some point. i hope and believe that in season 3 written plot point and Character ark for both hwang in-ho and seong gi-hun. A commebt made me think more deeply and how i worded The Comment i hope this makes it clear what i ment and if anyone disagrees then Tell me.
I wouldn't say it proves In-Ho right. Gi-Hun is playing in accordance to the artifical circumstances of the games but In-Ho extends his philosophy outside of the games into the real world, where they, of course, do not apply because the real world is not a death game.
I wonder how the winners get around paying taxes on their money. I don't know how taxes work in South Korea but if I suddenly had $30 million in a bank account the IRS would be knocking on my door.
I've been searching for ages since I watched season 2. Does none get the true message of season 2 and how it truly represents the present world we live in today not only in south Korea but the rest of the world. People wake up (btw I'm not gonna go into depth in what I'm talking abt). If anyone knows what I'm talking abt please comment.
oh no i wrote a long comment and it disappeared. anyway another thing - the main point i took from season is that the system in which the game exists is undefeated, because it is complex and adaptive. it takes its vulnerabilities and makes accommodations, then keeps rolling. for eg a big change this year to allow players to keep the money if they leave early, gi-hun is being rolled into the system too, just like the previous winners. I had hoped we wouldn't even return to the games this season. gi-hun is doomed to failure for a few key reasons a) attacking the game, rather than the system which feeds it b) heroic actions rather than collectivism (he only has a small band or participants) c) willingness to sacrifice players for 'the greater good' shows he's not free from the mental models that opress him
Oh yes, I just saw the Osmosis one! Thank you, love your videos, were you going to make more videos on the other aspects of season two, I really enjoyed it but I’d love to hear your opinion on it

How didn’t Gi-Hun not suspect 001. Like that number didn’t raise an eyebrow? Not 1 ? After tbe 1st time. Name literally means 001. Common man 😂😂
Your squid game analysis was awesome, love to see it
Damn your videos were so good, especially those which focused on one character. Glad you are back🎉❤
I might do a few of those again let's see.
The system. Definitely the system. The individual may have free will, but their decisions are limited by their knowledge and power.

I wonder how the winners get around paying taxes on their money. I don't know how taxes work in South Korea but if I suddenly had $30 million in a bank account the IRS would be knocking on my door.
I’m sure VIPs and the game organizers have enough power to disregard tax and other logistics
