They Made it Look So Easy! Maidens w/2 Planes Go Bad

  • After getting bit by the RC plane/flying bug, I thought I could just buy a few planes of different skill levels and just go out and fly.
Fueled by watching multiple videos from experienced pilots telling me these planes are so easy to fly, I placed orders. Several orders.
Watch and see what happens. Kids, don't try this at home.

Okay! So, this is a great video for a lot of reasons.
1.) Every time a UA-camr reviews a plane, take it with a huge grain of salt. They’re usually great pilots and as a beginner, you are not! Your experience is not likely to be similar to theirs.
2.) Unless you’re flying ultra-micro planes, a park or baseball field is way too small of a space.
3.) I also lost my first plane (a hobbyzone champ) in a tree!
Way to stay at it! Don’t TOUCH that viper until you can fly and land your other two planes consistently every time (a lesson I also had to learn!) The viper has way more power and the crash will be way more catastrophic.
Maybe find an actual RC club for that ranger, fly that for a few weeks, then maybe a Habu before you fly that viper. Keep taking your umx mustang out to the ball field though, that’s where it’s meant to fly!

Really good advice here, and I'll try to add to it. I learned first with some flite test planes, by myself in a park. Later I joined a club and went to their training nights to learn "properly" from people who knew their stuff. I learned so much so quick. If there is a club in your area that you can afford for a season, I highly recommend taking advantage of your local experts. You also really do need a bit more space to fly that ranger as a beginner, especially if you want to graduate out of using SAFE, which you should do as quickly as possible, because SAFE will teach you bad habits (like that you turn by maxing out your roll stick, which you almost never do without SAFE unless you want to roll inverted). Definitely don't fly that jet until that ranger becomes boring to fly and you can go most every flight without incident. That jet will be FAR less forgiving of mistakes, and one or two mistakes is probably all you'll get without replacing most of the plane.

Awesome to see people entering this hobby. It's such a rush taking off and (hopefully) landing the first few times. But it doesn't really go away :)
I think you did great to be honest, but would suggest either 1. flying somewhere with a bit more space to give you more time to react, or 2. getting a flight sim, and putting in some hours at home first to get the controls down.

Just stumbled across your video...BRAVO for stepping out of your comfort zone and staying positive! I've been flying for over 30 years and STILL get a touch nervous on some maidens (especially balsa scratch builds). A few pointers (if I may), keep your throttle up around 75% while getting adjusted to a new plane and while trimming them out. Slower speeds bring you closer to stall speeds and are much less forgiving, so more finesse is required during turns. As you become familiar with the aircraft, start making lower passes and then start reducing throttle getting ready to land. Fly the aircraft to the wheels. All the best on your journey into flight! Doing great so far!

    • @bigbristv
      @bigbristv  Місяць тому +2

I really appreciate this Kevin, thank you! They kept saying 50% throttle but what you say makes more sense, especially since altitude is lost on some turns. Also, I realize a good landing was impossible in that field's surface.

This reminded me of my first attempt to fly, what was then called a, " Park Flyer " !
So I took it to a Park !
A State Park, with trees !
    Lots of trees !
I found a small secluded area, where it was only me a couple of Swing Sets and those trees !
The area formed an almost perfect circle !
Perfect for Mother Nature maybe, but not so much for someone trying to teach themselves how to fly !
If I didn't say, this was a small battery powered Airplane !
Not really modeled after anything, just a body and some wings etc. !
    I'm sure you understand !
Long story short, I too hand launched the aircraft, and from the very instant it left my finger tips it was Game on !
As crazy as it sounds, the only way I could control it in the circle of trees, was to throttle on, throttle off !
Right turn, throttle on, throttle off, glide throttle on, etc. !
It was probably one of the most adrenaline infused, chaotic 20 seconds of my life !
And that's probably about how long I kept it airborne, until outta the corner of my eye, I spied a landing strip !
Well at least a makeshift one !
It just happened to be the sand that made up the ground under the swings !
You know those State Park Swings with the oversized chains, meant to last a hundred years, attached to a
    Rhino hide seat !
Somehow, I like to think by the Grace of GOD, I somehow managed to come in just under one of the hanging seats, and safely belly landed it !
After trying to settle down from the adrenaline rush, I was crazy enough to do it again !
I later found a much larger area in the Park to fly in, and continued to hone my skills as a pilot !
    Those were the days !
And many things have happened since, as in Life they do !
Haven't flown in many years !
Just as I was slowing down my air time, I believe it was Futaba was just beginning to try and workout The kinks they had with their newly released 2.4 gigahertz gear !
If you lived it, you know what I'm talking about !
Good Luck with your future flights !
Clear skies and tailwinds, to you !

Man way to stay at it! We review planes often, and I will tell you, "Beginner friendly" and "Easy to fly" doesn't mean you don't need help. Absolutely the best way to learn to fly RC is with an instructor. Period. Doesn't mean you can't learn on your own, but you will crash if you do that. For sure. Getting someone experienced to help you with set up, pre-flight checks, and general knowledge is invaluable. Self leveling can help bail you out, but it teaches you some bad habits if you stay in it. We're doing a video on Landing RC planes for beginners soon. Check that out. We've reviewed some great trainer aircraft...including the Ranger. Again though..."great trainer" doesn't mean anyone can fly it without help. If you're going to teach yourself...the number one thing you need is a RC flying Sim like RealFlight. That will help you figure things out...and it has a reset button. There is even a new Trainer edition of that.

This is a great video for beginners to watch. WELL DONE! I honestly feel, from my own experience and seeing others train at the club, that you did better than half of people first trying to fly an RC plane, even though it was using SAFE in beginner mode. Without an instructor, most people don't have a plane worth repairing after a couple flights. Beginners, please listen: You are witnessing a relative success story here. You really should consider joining a club and getting expert instruction, it helps a ton. I should have done it sooner than I did.

I’m not overly experienced myself. But I thought you did remarkably well for having to figure it out yourself. My semi worthless advice would be to have a simple flying plan (routine) for starters. Take off, fly the pattern like it was a real flying field and set up for a gentle landing. If it’s coming in too hot or awkward, abort and fly around again. Nothing feels better than greasing in your landings.

I started with a Volantex P51D Mustang, only 400mm, and that crashed like yours. But I quickly got the hang of flying in stabilized mode. My second was a UMX Air Tractor and I crashed that too. Glue and it is now called Mr McGlue, but still flies as you could see on my UA-cam channel. I also fly the FMS Ranger 1220mm and that is a great plane. My E-flite Cherokee 1.3m is also a fantastic flyer as is my UMX Turbo Timber Evolution. You'll get flying very well quickly. Some flight time on a simulator has been an outstanding way to learn to fly. Thanks for the video.

My first instructor 45 years ago would never let me take the plane off. He said; first we'll teach you to fly, then we'll teach you to land.
When I asked why in this order? His response was; ANYBODY, can take a plane off!
Best of luck with your new hobby.

  • @FarmerFpv
    @FarmerFpv Місяць тому +8

Your throttle is not your elevator. You must pull back on the left stick to pull up. That little helicopter has you confused. Real RC helicopter controls are just like RC planes. That toy helicopter is 3 channels and only has pitch and yaw control, not pitch and aileron control. You keep crashing in the turns because you are not giving enough up the elevator which is pulling back on the right stick. Get a free flight simulator. FMS has a free flight simulator that connects with the FMS radio you have. Next, go to a bigger field or parking lot with no obstacles. You need at least 3 football fields long and 2 wide when learning to fly. That way you can focus on flying and not focus on avoiding onsticals.

Wow, your doing good by yourself. I would recommend one of the pusher prop/glider style planes. The prop is protected and the tend to fly a little slower. Save that jet till you are a confident flyer. And I recommend a larger flying area. Then you are not constantly turning. This will give you time to think about what you are doing. That small space has you constantly reacting, eventually you crash. Good luck.

Sounds like you’re on the right track my friend. And remember, even those guys, the Brian Phillips of the world, crash planes. It’s all part of the hobby. The more space you have the better. Two things make me nervous when flying, 1) Hurting someone and 2) Property Damage. So I try and fly as far from either of those as possible and I can focus solely on flying. Also, if you don’t have Real Flight simulator, stop biting planes and get the SIM!!! It is worth its weight in airplanes!!! The muscle memory and overall understanding of takeoff, flight and landing will improve dramatically, without costing you thousands to learn. And my last bit of advice is to start with a plane like that Ranger to learn on. Not those UMX planes or that Viper 😂. Welcome to the most addicting hobby on the planet 😂

I learnt through countless 60 inch balsa wood models as a 35 year old. Large models fly best, but they are more dangerous to others and more expensive. One must have insurance and training. I was an idiot and did not. (When I knew the basics; like propping up the dropping wing with the aileron stick, as the plane comes towards you) I tried my hand at aerobatics. I often stalled my seven pound models trying fancy flying. Maddeningly, there is little information regarding variable scratch built model weight and the fuel power, i.c. engine size, possible tuned pipe use, best prop combination critically needed. Modern foam models with safe mode, make all these worries redundant. However, large high wing models are best to learn on because the wing is protected during heavy landings, thanks to the friendly 'pendulum effect,' with help from S.A.F.E. Hope this helps.

I HIGHLY recommend the tail heavy rc video on his guide on stalls, I noticed you're stalling your plane in multiple ways including holding up on the elevator too much! Tricky I know! He talks about lowering power to idle first which is slows everything down specifically the accelerated nose dives so common mid turn when starting out. If you're a car person you're essentially understeering your lift on your wing and having trouble finding out why more throttle or elevation/steering won't fix it which doesn't fix an understeer but backing off both does for both cars and the lift on your wing in a stall! Hope that helps

I love your enthusiasm, and I hope you stick with the hobby! Two tips to make your experience less expensive and frustrating: first, get a simulator, like RealFlight. That way crashes don't cost any time or money. Second, find yourself a local club where you can get an instructor to take you up on a buddy box. You'll learn way more quickly and make some new friends too.

Yay! I started in the last 2 years too. I'll second the recommendation to learn on a sim. A few minutes a day of deliberate practice and you'll be very confident. It might also give you quick access to a larger space to fly to give yourself a bit more time. If your transmitter supports it try using low rates or expo to smooth things out.

This is a great video, It seems like everyone that reviews a plane/boat/car is paid/given free product to review. You seem like a regular guy just having fun. I would recommend finding someplace better and bigger to fly even if you have to drive a little ways away, so you don't have so many trees and are less likely to hit someone. Those 400mm planes are hard to fly, and don't be discouraged when you crash. I would buy some foam tac or foam to foam glue and glue them back together. I also buy props a few at a time.

You chose a warbird for your first plane. Those are designed to be fast and agile, for dogfights. You wouldnt put a flight school student in a dogfight. Also, ive never had good results from Horizon. They've not very durable. Your Ranger was an excellent choice. To repair your wing, use either CA glue from the hobbyshop, or Gorilla Glue super glue. I like Gorilla Glue Gel. It doesnt run on application. To repair the wrinkled foam section, try steam and a large spoon to smooth. Many videos of repairing foam planes are on line. You definitely need a larger flying field. A rule of thumb is, whatever space you THINK you need, triple it. And, welcome to the hobby, brother.

Little more height tad more throttle and less input on the sticks just stooge around a bit and practice how much input you need to give to get where you want to be(more space would be a bonus ! ) if you are not sure of your approach on landing throttle up and go around again. Bloody well done for having a go. Leaving that jet in the box for a while longer is great advice aswell ! Volantex make a little 400mm F16 that may suit as an intermediate step as stated they eat up the sky real fast . Good fun. Regards Chris

The trick as a beginner is to do a constant turn and fly in circle. Then you reduce the mind workload and can focus on throttle and stick feel. One need to learn instictive throttle increase with large stick movements, and decrease throttle once the movement is over. Otherwise you either stall or fly faster and faster. You flew incredible well for a first go at it!

But it still happens to us all, I have been flying RC planes for a long time and still have one of those Stupid moments at times, But yeah, A instructor, Or a flight sim will help you a lot. I have about 50 some planes, boats, cars, trucks, And they all have their own personality, You need to learn them. I say stay with the Ranger for a bit until you know every little thing about it, You have the "Fever" and I know you are looking at planes that are to far advanced for you yet, Like that jet, You will be there one day just don't rush it. ModelAV8R has taught me some good tips over the years, And have bought planes that he reviewed, Have fun and be safe, And don't get frustrated, A friend of mine who I fly with in a Piper Archer says Flying a RC plane is harder then Flying a real plane, So there ya' go. I taught myself to fly with a simulator 10 years ago, but I used a real park-friendly airplane; the UMX Radian. It's a slow flyer that self-levels and rarely ever gets into trouble. Once I got that sorted, I moved on to a Champ RTF (Yellow cub). After crashing that, I found #FliteTest and started building foam kits. I could beat the crap out of those and rebuild them in 20 minutes! I even have Flite Test EDF's: the Retro Rocket is a great foamy jet. That's where "Build, Test, repeat" or Build, Crash, Repeat comes from. #JoshBixler.
