  • Cliff goes over what he wears on archery elk hunts, archery mule deer hunts, and sheep/goat hunts from late August through September. He covers his layering system in detail: from merino wool base layers, to multiple insulation/puffy options, soft shells and finishing off with rain gear.
This system has been used over guided hundreds of early Fall mountain hunts.
Cliff discusses gear from First Lite, Kuiu, Under Armour and Wilkins Canvas.
Cliff's full early Fall gear lists are available here:

Gaitors; survival equipment in the mountains- when a unforeseen mondo blizzard blows in 3 miles from camp which is 1,500’ up you will be glad to have them. When crossing rivers you can walk across almost up to your knees and stay dry. Ever field dress an elk with out gaitors. Getting elk blood in your socks/boots sucks. Kicking steps in snow- you have to have them. Ever run out for survival? Yeh the your freezing and wet … gators are one more line of protection.

I'm going hunting in NW Colorado in Late October. I'll be doing alot of hiking and busting brush. Do you all have a jacket you recommend that's waterproof and can stand up to a beating in the brush?

What is the point of the silk lining and/or compression socks?

Couple things...1)If you are on a long duration backpack hunting trip, you can have cleaner material on your feet more often. Liners weigh far less than socks. 2)For most peoples' feet, the ability for movement to occur between the two socks (liner and normal sock) drastically limits blisters and hotspots. Hope that helps. - Cliff

I know this is an old comment but I figured I'd say that in the military, a lot of us wear our thin, black, issued, dress socks under our normal socks on long ruck marches. They're basically the same as liners. It makes a huge difference and prevents blisters and hot spots.
