  • We introduced Berghia nudibranchs into our systems to help mow down Aiptasia. The problem is they REALLY look like Montipora Eating Nudibranchs. If you’ve ever had to deal with Montipora Eating Nudibranchs, they are a pretty bad pest. I want to give you guys a visual reference of what these guys look like in comparison because one of these is a bad pest and the other is super helpful invert that usually costs $30 a piece.

    The way the title is worded had me thinking “What? An aptasia actually ATE a berghia? This I’ve got to see.”

    They work great! I used them. Just have to be patient. Soon you just forget about then then 2 months later, no more aiptasia period. Only down side is that once the food source is gone, the BH die .

      The down side is that when they finish eating them, they starve as thats all they eat, so be ready to pass them on to somebody else!

    Thanks Than. I’ve always been a fan of BNs . I have introduced several into the 150 gal part of the system as my main problem is there. However, the Aiptasia are now present in my other two tanks in the system. That being said, I plan to farm the BN and feed them Aiptasia out of a special grow out tank.

      Same here, I love these things and and I plan to breed them as well. They are currently ridding my 100 gallon of aiptasia. I wouldnt want to use anything else for aiptasia.

    Would these attack any other anemones? What about attacking zoa's? or any other coral? leathers, scans, blasto, chalice,etc I'm looking for an aptasia rid problem I've been dosing atasia X keeping them at Bay but I guess it's a never ending process until I can find a solution, I almost got a peppermint shrimp, however I already have an emerald Crab as well as a harlequin to tackle my ascarina starfish problem and don't think the peppermint would get along with either of these Thanks in advance!

    • @formallydehyde

      I know this was from a year ago but Berghia can't eat anything besides aiptasia anemones - they rely on aiptasia specific chemical cues to hunt. You could put a hungry Berghia in a tank with hundreds of any other type of anemone and any type of coral and they would just wander around looking for aiptasia till they died of starvation.

      I have a filefish that would never touch aiptasia at first, but then after I introduced a handful of peppermints, they started clearing out my aiptasia, and somehow that triggered the filefish to start eating it. I don't have any visible aiptasia anymore due to their combined efforts.

    Do they eat anything other than Aiptasia?
    Or rather, what is the carrying capacity of a given system? Do they die off once the Aiptasia is consumed, or will they persists as a multi-generation addition by consuming detritus or another food source? That can be the difference between a short term fix and a long term solution.
    That said: thank you for the insight. I was just curious, I can't find a lot of information on these things. And they look like a great option if/when Aiptasia inevitably become a problem.

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  3 роки тому +5

      They will starve without Aiptasia to eat so people either ask for more Aiptasia from other hobbyists or they sell/trade/give away the nudibranchs.
