- Norfolk is a town where the water is never far away! It’s a beautiful place to visit with a vibrant arts scene, mouthwatering gastronomy and 144 miles of shore to explore solo, with friends or with the entire family.
One of the best ways to get oriented is to get out on the water. Set sail aboard The American Rover. This three-masted topsail schooner has been a signature site along the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor since 1986, offering 1 ½ and 2 hour narrated Harbor or Sunset Cruises, from April through October.
Norfolk is divided into distinct neighborhoods each with its own identity. On a map you’ll note the downtown, historic Ghent, Chelsea, North Colley & Beyond, The Military Highway and the airport and finally, Ocean view and East Beach.
It’s not every day, you can step foot on board a decommissioned battleship. In Norfolk, right downtown on the waterfront, say hello to the USS Wisconsin. She saw tours in WWII, Korea and the Gulf War. You can take a guided or self-guided tour. I suggest purchasing a Gold ticket. This gives you access to the battleship and Nauticus. This is the maritime-themed science center and museum.
Chrysler Museum of Art is home to a collection of nearly 30,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of history. The Chrysler Museum of Art possesses one of the great glass collections in America.

Yes there are good and bad places everywhere but Virginia Beach is way nicer at night time I would much rather go to town center than Norfolk
Agree Jeffrey. I would prefer Virginia Beach to Norfolk. Honestly, I like North Carolina better than Virginia.

Also, The Freemason Abbey is a restaurant that costs a pretty penny but is worth it.

good choice, I used to eat there back in the 1991 time frame, beautiful old church. Who remembers Bessie's boathouse? Have a nice day cafe and Bar Norfolk, great times in the early to mid 90's.

Are Ocean View and Bay View safe to visit?
Edit: I stayed in Ocean View which was fine, it felt safe but it’s kind of sketchy. If I go again I’ll stay in VB or somewhere better. Ocean View Beach is nice. Neighborhood convenience stores and hotels are kind of ghetto.

Some people if it's not more"shooting or big building" skycraper" per say then it's slow.. seriously.. tall buildings look good but most can't afford to stay in them.
I agree with you 100%... I love the city of Norfolk and the entire Hampton Roads area. It's an American gem full of history and culture. I live in a BIG CITY with the things that you described along with a great history to go along with it. Too much crime and too many tall buildings are overwhelming and reduce the quality of life in many great cities. Most of the people that call cities slow are lacking themselves and will burn out by living too fast. It's great the way it is!
Norfolk isn't bad.. actually it's a pretty cool city...no more or less the same as an east coast Portland.

Sutton Ward I’ve lived in Norfolk my entire life, I love it. Like any city it’s got dangerous spots but our crime rates aren’t bad.
Sutton Ward don’t worry about it, Norfolk honestly is fine you just gotta know where you’re going. If you have even basic understanding of the are you’ll be just fine. If you stay on Hampton or Granby st or the Ghent or downtown area you’ll be real safe. I’ve lived in Norfolk for about 5 years and it’s such an underrated and beautiful city.

If you want to know what Norfolk, VA is like, watch the movie "Escape From New York" and you'll get a pretty good idea. There are gangs roving around on every street, including ON the naval base day and night. Businesses are extorted. People are robbed, raped, carjacked, and assaulted every day. There are NO police in Norfolk, just a couple of uniformed cowards that are too scared to even write a parking ticket. They WON'T respond to any 911 call. Aleppo is a better and safer city than Norfolk. Don't EVER go near this place; you will be robbed, beaten, or killed. This includes Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and Newport News; they're exactly the same way. Don't even drive through it, don't get any closer to that area than Suffolk.

Church street in Norfolk, an excellent place to spot able bodied black gentleman standing around on the sidewalk at all hours of the day, and night, seemingly doing nothing while their “baby’s mama” is off a school / or work.
Sorry, gotta add one more negative comment-having lived there recently-way too much crime, murders, hold ups, gangs, gangs and more gangs. Do not go there at night-much of the shooters hang there after dark.
Worth one day visit, during the day-the zoo is good, waterside restaurants, Ghent-that’s about it 🤦🏻♀️

Nonsense. The grass itself has never been blue. Bluegrass is a species of grass. The name derives from its flower heads, which are blue when the plant is allowed to grow to its natural height of 60 to 90 cm.

City of Norfolk itself is a beautiful place, but there is always a negative side in every places. I knew it because I was stationed in Norfolk Naval Station before.
The negative side I'm talking about is, there are a lot of white supremacist in that whole state of Virginia....too 😭 sad.
