Replacing the valve in a Thetford C260 toilet

  • In this video we cover replacing the flush valve on a Thetford caravan or RV toilet.
This is the valve fitted to Thetford toilets that take water from your main fresh supply, not from a separate tank.
The valve/pump for a separate tank may be in the same place but Ive never taken one of those apart so no promises.

Hi Rob, just wanted to say a massive thank you for putting this video together. The flush stopped working in my motorhome but it turned out the water was still being pumped but directly into the space below the toilet. I followed your instructions to remove the top of the loo and found a pipe had come off the pump so replaced it and added a jubilee clip. Couldn't have done it without your help! Thanks again, Dave

Hi Rob. Thank you for this. I didn't have an issue with the solenoid, but with the one way valve, which I found was leaking down onto the cassette. Your video was excellent at showing me how to get access to work out what was going on.

    Very informative thanks.
It's always good to see these jobs done before you have to tackle them yourself.

      Glad you enjoyed it.
The hardest part was separating the inlet hose from the old valve. The rest is straightforward. :)

I'd noticed when I opened the door to the cassette the other day that there was water sitting inside and wrongly assumed rain water had got in! When I arrived on site, I could see a slight weeping from the flush so I removed the fuse hoping that stopping the power would stop the valve from working, but it doesn't. So after looking at your video and the one from Thetford, I'm going to buy the new valve and change it next weekend. Real pain to get access, you haven't got enough room to get your head and arm in at the same time!

@@howtodostuffchannel No, unfortunately not. couldn't find the valve. there was a note that my cassette toilet has no valve because there is a separate tank. Too bad the error must be somewhere else.

Sorry to hear that. If there is a separate tank then it's likely there is a pump inside/attached to the tank. What's the symptom? Is it leaking or just not working? (If its not working then could be electrical (switch) or the pump itself).
(my system works from the main water supply in the caravan so uses a valve so Im not familiar with the other type. Perhaps someone else on here knows more?)

@@howtodostuffchannel I have already installed a new pump. But the flushing water only runs in a small amount and does not stop even though the pump is not activated.

Solved my problem - was the valve. Had difficulty releasing vacuum breaker from its clip. It's easier if you remove the seat/cover/hinge assembly from the bowl you can then unclip the vacuum breaker from the other side.

What a wonderful and comprehensive guide. I'm a bit confused however as on the Thetford website under repairs it suggests you only need to remove the main bracket that's nearest the door. Maybe that refers to a newer (or older?) version, certainly my own one (in a 2012 model van) looks like the version you're showing here.

Hi, glad it was helpful. It's entirely possible that you can get away with only removing the outer bracket (if I understand you correctly). The main bits you need to get at are those clips inside that hold the bowl in place. If you are going to do the job then please share on here if the bowl indeed comes off without removing the rear bracket. :)

@@howtodostuffchannel Finally got around to looking at my one and it does indeed come apart as per your video. The problem was not the valve itself but the outlet side of the pipe had come off! I notice however that the outlet side and the pipes connected to the non-return valve do not have pipe clips. (on your video it also doesn't look like you have clips either) I purchased a new non-return (vacuum) valve and this came with pipe clips (also came with instructions which match your video, so I guess there must be slightly different models depending on age) So I'm wondering if there ought to be pipe clips or is there a specific reason why there shouldn't be? (I wondered if perhaps it was designed to come apart as a protection during freezing say?)

Interesting question...but I don't know the answer. Logically, if your pipe had fallen off and the new part came with pipe clips then they are probably needed.:)

@@howtodostuffchannel I have now fitted clips to all the connections. Although the main valve was ok I noticed a photo of the spare part showed it with two clips so it does look as though it should have them. Also what I though was strange is the the valve is essentially 'hanging' there inside the bowl with no support! Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to put this video on UA-cam, I wouldn't have a had clue where to start without it

In my case once i switch on the pump it pumps all the time but water doesn't come to the bowl, i don't press the flush button either. It just the pump keeps running. What can be the issue?

    • @howtodostuffchannel
      @howtodostuffchannel  2 роки тому +1

If this is one with a separate tank then this is what would happen if the tank is empty?

@@howtodostuffchannel I think I found the problem. Electric valve exploded. Will fix it in two weeks and I hope it helps. Males sense now why the pump keeps going and no water coming out. Thanks man :)
